Abstract

This qualitative study used a combination of linguistic and rhetorical analysis to look at how conjunctions are used in Donald Trump and Joe Biden's victory speeches. Grounded in a Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory, this article examined the functional features of language in the social context of political speech. The result of analysis shows distinctive patterns in conjunction choices that include locative, additive, contrastive, purpose-driven, simultaneous, sequential, conditional, and causal roles. While Trump's speech stresses additive and simultaneous structures, reflecting his dynamic and emotive rhetorical approach, Biden's speech lens toward purposeful conjunction, in line with a policy-oriented communication style. In the meantime, some types of conjunctions are absent prompts a reflection on implicit messages. Overall, by raising students' awareness of conjunction usage and its rhetorical impact in persuasive discourse, this study offers a nuanced exploration of language choices and advances our understanding of how conjunctions function within the larger context of political communication. This has potential pedagogical implications for ELT, particularly in the teaching of writing.

Abstract

Cohesion and coherence aspects are the essential components of writing, including descriptive and narrative texts. Those writing components are inevitably required to build a readable written text. This research mainly attempts to investigate the aspects of cohesion and coherence in the students writing tasks on descriptive and narrative text genres. 390 students were randomly selected as the subjects from thirteen senior high schools in Langke Rembong district. The students were assigned to write both descriptive and narrative text genres concerning the given prepared topics. The topics were familiar with the students. The data were analyzed in a descriptive quantitative model of analysis in light of percentages and counted scores. Accordingly, cohesion and coherence aspects were subsumed under some levels. The research revealed that cohesion and coherence aspects were poorly employed in the students writing. Only a smaller amount of the writings were partially cohesive and coherent texts, while most writings were fully incohesive and incoherent. Cohesion and coherence aspects found in the students descriptive and narrative texts were categorized into the lower level.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the acquistion of English morphemes in English Foreign Language classroom at elementary school. The investigation is concerned with the identification, description, and interpretation of English morphemes acquired by 30 elementary students at SDK Ruteng I in Langke Rembong district. Therefore, descriptive qualitative research method mixed with quatintative approach were applied. a series of classroom observations, note-taking, and audio-recording were utilized to delve into more naturalistic data relating to form and pattern of morphemes. The data from the transcripts and field-notes were analyzed to capture the forms of morpheme as well as to identify frequency and patterns of English morpheme during the acquisition process in EFL learning context. The results of data analysis were displayed in matrix, table and chart, while conclusion drawing and verification were simultenously conducted at the final procedure. Verification of data was triangulized by comparing the data from recording and field-notes. The findings reveal that free and bound morphemes are acquired differently by students in learning English vocabulary. Free morphemes are predominantly acquired, especially in the categories of nouns and verbs, whereas bound morphemes are less frequently obtained. These findings indicate that the acquisition of morphological aspects follows a sequence, beginning with free morphemes and subsequently progressing to bound morphemes. Among bound morphemes, inflectional morphemes are acquired earlier than derivational morphemes. Based on the findings, it is concluded that the acquisition of morphemes in English is more complex due to different language structures and aligns with the developmental stages of individual learners' linguistic developmen

Abstract

Ritual language in Manggarai holds profound cultural-ecological significance, as it encodes collective values, environmental wisdom, and human–nature interdependence. Yet, despite eco-linguistic concerns over how language shapes and reflects ecological relationships, the lexicons of Teing Hang Woja have not previously been examined through this perspective. This study aims to describe the ideology and meaning of lexicons used in the ritual text of the teing hang woja in the speech Community of Manggarai, Flores Indonesia. This study also aims to describe the shift in the lexicons in the text as a result of changes in people's social activities. This is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through interviews, participative observation, and Focus Group Discussion. Ten key informants were selected for interviews and FGD needs with several criteria. The results showed that the lexicons in the ritual text of teing hang woja contained the ideology of asking for an abundance of water, smoothness, and success of the agricultural process which were closely related to the socio-cultural conditions of the people as farmers. However, along with the social development of the community, the ideology contained in the text then expanded to other aspects such as the pleading for the success of the livestock business, education, and public health of the speakers. Meanwhile, the meaning contained in the text is more about stylistic meaning, affective meaning, social and reflective or spiritual meaning. The lexical analysis in Teing Hang Woja text not only provides insights into Manggarai's cultural ecology but also enriches eco-linguistic studies, emphasizing the importance of understanding language in efforts to safeguard ecological sustainability.
