Abstract

This article aims at investigating language/s used in public signs in Taman Nasional Komodo (TNK), Labuan Bajo, Flores-NTT. It was designed as a qualitative study as the data are pictures, words, and sentences found in the public signs in TNK. The data were collected by doing an observation where every single sign found in TNK was photographed by using a Vivo y17 camera. After collecting the data, the data were analyzed by the following steps: data reduction, data display and data verification and conclusion. The result mentions that public signs in TNK divided into two types; they are monolingual and bilingual signs. The monolingual signs confirm that the public signs in TNK just use one language either Indonesian or English. However, bilingual refers to the public signs in TNK using both Indonesian and English for the same public sign. There are nine types of signs applied in TNK public signs. They are signs of place name, place manager, place description, map, history, notice, warning, appeal, and esthetic. Abstract

This study aimed to examine the cognitive levels of reading comprehension questions in the English for Nusantara Grade 8 textbook using Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy. Specifically, it sought to identify the extent to which the textbook promotes lower-order and higher-order thinking skills (LOTS and HOTS) through its reading comprehension tasks. A qualitative content analysis was conducted on 190 reading comprehension questions extracted from five textbook chapters and one progress check section. Each question was categorized according to the six cognitive levels outlined in Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy: Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, and Creating. Frequencies and percentages were calculated to determine the distribution of cognitive levels across chapters. The findings revealed a predominant emphasis on lower order thinking skills, with Understanding and Remembering accounting for most questions in all sections. Higher-order thinking skills were considerably underrepresented, particularly Applying (2.11%) and Creating (3.16%). The progress check section assessed only Remembering and Understanding, indicating minimal cognitive challenge. While Chapter 4 demonstrated a more balanced cognitive distribution, the overall results reflect a narrow scope of cognitive engagement. In conclusion, this study contributes to the growing body of research on textbook evaluation in EFL contexts by highlighting the imbalance in cognitive demand of reading comprehension questions. It requires the need for instructional materials and assessment practices to be reoriented toward fostering critical, analytical, and creative thinking skills among learners.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the acquistion of English morphemes in English Foreign Language classroom at elementary school. The investigation is concerned with the identification, description, and interpretation of English morphemes acquired by 30 elementary students at SDK Ruteng I in Langke Rembong district. Therefore, descriptive qualitative research method mixed with quatintative approach were applied. a series of classroom observations, note-taking, and audio-recording were utilized to delve into more naturalistic data relating to form and pattern of morphemes. The data from the transcripts and field-notes were analyzed to capture the forms of morpheme as well as to identify frequency and patterns of English morpheme during the acquisition process in EFL learning context. The results of data analysis were displayed in matrix, table and chart, while conclusion drawing and verification were simultenously conducted at the final procedure. Verification of data was triangulized by comparing the data from recording and field-notes. The findings reveal that free and bound morphemes are acquired differently by students in learning English vocabulary. Free morphemes are predominantly acquired, especially in the categories of nouns and verbs, whereas bound morphemes are less frequently obtained. These findings indicate that the acquisition of morphological aspects follows a sequence, beginning with free morphemes and subsequently progressing to bound morphemes. Among bound morphemes, inflectional morphemes are acquired earlier than derivational morphemes. Based on the findings, it is concluded that the acquisition of morphemes in English is more complex due to different language structures and aligns with the developmental stages of individual learners' linguistic developmen
