Abstract

The 21st-century education emphasizes a number of indicators that teachers, students, parents, and other education stakeholders should completely understand. English teachers should be encouraged to be able to integrate the intended 21st-century competency indicators into instructional materials that are preceded by a needs analysis stage. Needs analysis is crucial in designing English materials as it serves as a valuable tool for practitioners to create English materials aligned with students' target and learning needs. As a consequence, needs analysis is seen as a necessary component of the teaching practice. The purposes of this study are to examine and reveal the numerous types of students' target needs and learning needs for English material development. This study examined two English lecturers and 206 students enrolled in the primary education department. The data collection instrument was a questionnaire and the data were analyzed using a software program, namely an excel chart data series. Findings indicated that the students' target needs included necessities, lacks, and wants, whereas learning needs included input, procedure, setting, learner's role, and lecturer's role in the teaching-learning process. Students' target and learning needs emphasized the importance of developing English materials that boosted 21st-century education skills. English materials should be adjusted to meet the needs of students' future careers, with a particular emphasis on the eleven sub-skills of 21st-century education.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate and disclose the integration of project-based learning in promoting high school students' ICT literacy and English learning autonomy in Ruteng, Indonesia. This study surveyed 595 students from six senior high schools in Ruteng City. The questionnaire and interview served as the primary instruments for data collection, followed by quantitative and qualitative examination of the results using Jeffreys' Amazing Statistics Program. The results of the study indicate that the level of ICT literacy among the students falls in the medium category (3.5), and English learning autonomy was included in the medium category (3.32). Sixteen statements of ICT literacy competence indicated the category of ICT literacy competence, while ten items indicated English learning autonomy. In addition, five factors challenged the respondents' achievement of ICT literacy, namely, lack of enthusiasm and initiative of students regarding digital media literacy (61.59%), lack of cost of purchasing Internet data packages (71.20%), insufficient time allocated for using specific English learning software (59.48%), unstable Internet network connectivity (58.27%), and lack of available ICT infrastructure in schools (58.33%). Various issues hinder the level at which students could acquire ICT skills, and stakeholders are encouraged to address or overcome these obstacles.

Abstract

Due to linguistic difficulties, students with hearing impairments face unique challenges when studying English as a foreign language (EFL). This study examined how hearing-impaired junior high school students in Indonesia were taught and the barriers faced by teachers when teaching students in English. The study employed a descriptive qualitative methodology involving nine teachers from schools for special needs education in Bali. This study applies multiple techniques, including questionnaire distribution, interviews, observations, and document analysis. The study shows the absence of teachers’ prior experience in developing curriculum and syllabus. Other main issues were related to teachers’ and students’ lack of sign language understanding, lack of learning materials, and students’ learning characteristics. The teachers primarily used grammar-translation methods and applied ineffective classroom management. By these findings, policymakers need to review the English curriculum, provide special training for teachers, and design the classroom to satisfy the unique learning needs of the students.

Abstract

Blended learning requires digital technology transformation for lecturers and students, up-to-date teaching methods, flexible learning processes, the effectiveness of time, space, budget, learning motivation, learning autonomy, all of which contribute to improving student learning achievement. However, current empirical research results do not support the claim that blended learning improves students' English proficiency and learning autonomy. Evidence shows that the blended learning has an effect on students' English competence, learning autonomy, motivation, and ICT literacy. For this article, the effect of blended learning in ESL/EFL was investigated and defined. This study is a quantitative explanatory research type with a pre-test and post-test design. The research participants were 198 students from the Department of Primary School Teacher Education, Universitas Katolik Indonesia Santu Paulus Ruteng. Seventy-four participants were chosen as samples using a random sampling method. Data was taken by test and non-test, and data was then analysed by a software program called SPSS 22.0. Twelve blended learning sessions, including six sessions in face-to-face settings and six sessions, are done virtually through the Zoom application. The results show that blended learning strengthens English student competence (the mean score on the post-test = 82.57), learning autonomy (88.57%), learning motivation (80%), and ICT literacy (71.43%).

Abstract

This research addresses interpersonal communication abilities and the related challenges faced in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms within Indonesian university settings. Knowledge of interpersonal communication influences how EFL learners perform in educational environments that require direct interaction. This study aims to explore students’ interpersonal communication abilities in speaking classes and the challenges they encounter. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between June and July 2023, involving 315 college students from six English Study Programs at six universities across three Indonesian provinces. Data were collected using questionnaires and interviews, followed by quantitative analysis. The findings indicate that the respondents’ interpersonal communication profiles were classified as Moderate (Average = 3.26). The most prevalent challenge (Average = 4.6) in developing interpersonal communication skills during speaking courses was difficulty in understanding the pronunciation of their speech partners. These findings are significant for undergraduate students, as they highlight the importance of developing communication skills through communicative competence. EFL learners are encouraged to communicate effectively by focusing on both the micro and macro components of linguistics. These elements are essential to cultivating a more compassionate, dynamic, engaging, functional, and experiential language learning environment, as they complement each other.
