Abstract

The case of sexual violence against women has sharply increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Discourses on justice and gender equality have been extensively voiced by Muslim feminists to combat sexual violence against women. The aim of this research is to explicate the liberation hermeneutics advocated by Farid Esack as a foundation for practical realization of gender equality in cases of sexual violence. Farid Esack's hermeneutics seeks to engage in dialogue and bridge the gap between the text of the Qur'an and the context in which its verses are understood, which are then interpreted progressively to become drivers of anti-oppression spirit against women. This study employs a literature review methodology with qualitative analysis, utilizing an analytical-historical approach to data presentation. Furthermore, the collected data are analyzed through the key theoretical approach of Farid Esack's hermeneutics, particularly focusing on the keys of jihad, and then elaborated within the context of the struggle for gender equality in Indonesia. The results reveal that the concepts of gender equality in the Qur'an give rise to various action-practice measures in addressing cases of sexual violence in Indonesia: Firstly, male feminist activists are engaged in advocating for gender justice in addressing cases of sexual violence against women. Secondly, efforts are made to enact laws as legal frameworks governing policies to protect women from cases of sexual violence, such as the Sexual Violence Criminal Act (UU-TPKS) along with its derivative laws and supervision. Thirdly, the role of women's protection advocacy institutions accompanies victims of sexual violence, providing support for their recovery and ensuring their legal rights to be protected. Abstract

The debate surrounding the subjectivity in aṭ-Ṭabarī’s use of history in his work Jāmi' al-Bayān challenges the perception of its popularity as a widely-referenced tafsīr bi ar-riwāyah (interpretation based on narration). The assumption that aṭ-Ṭabari defended tradition in his Quranic interpretation process necessitates an exploration of the contextual factors shaping his discursive formation. This study aims to uncover the interconnections within this formation by employing qualitative methods supported by archaeological analysis. The findings indicate that the intense intellectual debates during the Abbasid caliphate’s knowledge advancements influenced aṭ-Ṭabari’s interpretive model. The rationalistic tendencies that began to permeate Quranic interpretation were countered by aṭ-Ṭabarī’s decision to rely exclusively on well-known narrations from the Companions and Tabi'in. This approach is reflected in the interpretation of various verses on a majority scale. The intensity of the debates during aṭ-Ṭabarī’s era not only impacted interpretive methods but also extended to legal rulings and theological beliefs, often using Quranic arguments. Aṭ-Ṭabarī's response to this dynamic involved an interpretive model that emphasized the preeminence (tarjīḥ) of specific traditions, revealing his subjective inclinations. Similarly, his approach to responding to fiqh and theological issues, which often involved syllogism and linguistic analysis, demonstrates a tendency to choose meanings while critiquing the interpretive products of various schools of thought, indicating an inconsistency with the school he ostensibly supported. This aspect reveals aṭ-Ṭabarī’s independence from the prevailing mainstream schools of his time.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the interaction of students at the Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jadid Paiton, Probolinggo, East Java, with the Qur’an, both online and offline, to reveal changes in methods during the pandemic. With the field approach and reception theory, two forms of student interaction with the Qur’an were found, namely aspects of memorization and understanding; aspects of memorization that are carried out offline or online the pandemic as well as aspects of understanding that students choose through youtube instead of majelis ta’lim as an alternative in increasing knowledge in the field of the Qur’an. This article examines the form of interaction with the Qur’an through programmed activities with a pesantren background. In this article, the researcher describes why or what is wrong with the study of the Qur’an during the pandemic? Because during the pandemic, the learning method underwent several changes considering the impact of the pandemic spread that occurred since the end of 2019 certainly had an overall effect, including the education sector, at the pondok pesantren.
