Abstract

Counseling services in the local church play a significant role in creating positive transformation. Pastors guide the congregation in overcoming issues, crises, and behaviors inconsistent with the teachings of the Bible. The success of counseling depends not only on counselor-client collaboration but also on understanding principles and using appropriate tools. The counseling process involves support, guidance, and direction with the help of the Holy Spirit and biblical teachings. Prayer is crucial for victory and faith growth during crises. Maintaining confidentiality and reliable methods is vital for counselors. Christian counseling leverages unique access to two sources: the Holy Spirit's wisdom and the Bible's guidance in the counseling process.

Abstract

Juvenile delinquency is one of the significant challenges faced by modern societies, including Indonesia. Factors such as lack of affection, family conflicts, and environmental influences are often the main causes of deviant behavior. This study aims to analyze the application of love theology in pastoral counseling as a solution-oriented approach to address juvenile delinquency. The study employs a qualitative literature review method by analyzing relevant academic journals and books. The findings indicate that love theology, focusing on unconditional acceptance, forgiveness, and active love, plays an essential role in guiding adolescents toward spiritual recovery and moral transformation. This approach is considered effective in building empathetic relationships, providing spiritual support, and creating space for sustained character development.

Abstract

The increasing number of dysfunctional Christian families, marked by emotional detachment, unresolved conflicts, communication breakdown, and spiritual disorientation, has led to a significant rise in pastoral cases related to family crises within local churches. Existing pastoral approaches often focus on moral correction or doctrinal teaching but lack a relational framework capable of rebuilding emotional bonds and repairing attachment wounds. This study aims to formulate a pastoral intervention model grounded in relational counseling techniques to restore trust, communication, and spiritual integrity in dysfunctional families. Using a descriptive qualitative method through theological literature review, pastoral counseling theory, family psychology, and biblical analysis of relational restoration texts such as Genesis 33, Hosea 11, Matthew 18, and Ephesians 4:25–32, this article develops the Relational Pastoral Counseling Intervention Model (RPCIM). The model integrates emotional regulation, empathic communication, relational reframing, forgiveness work, and spiritual covenant renewal. The findings show that relational counseling enables families to rebuild secure emotional attachment, clarify expectations, restore mutual dignity, and rediscover their identity as a covenantal community shaped by the love of Christ.

Abstract

Toxic parenting refers to destructive parenting patterns that negatively affect a child’s development. This harmful parenting style is characterized by behaviors such as excessive control, verbal abuse, emotional neglect, and unrealistic expectations toward children. These conditions can lead to various mental health problems in children, including low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, as well as aggressive or withdrawn behavior. Moreover, toxic parenting often persists across generations if left unaddressed. This article discusses a counseling case study of a family demonstrating toxic parenting practices, along with intervention efforts aimed at improving the parenting dynamics. The method employed is a descriptive qualitative single-case study, with data collected through observation and counseling interviews. The findings indicate that toxic parenting within the family led to emotional and behavioral problems in the child; however, through intensive counseling intervention, improvements were observed in parental communication patterns and behavior. The discussion relates the case findings to relevant literature, affirming that parental awareness and professional assistance can break the cycle of toxic parenting. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of positive parenting education, emotional regulation, and effective communication for parents as preventive measures against toxic parenting, as well as the need for counseling support for families experiencing harmful parenting patterns.

Abstract

Online game addiction has become a significant developmental challenge for adolescents, particularly in Indonesia with its rapidly growing population of digital game users. This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of online game addiction among adolescents by integrating recent empirical findings with a Christian pastoral-theological perspective. Using a literature review approach, this research examines the causes, symptoms, and psychosocial effects of gaming addiction and interprets their implications for character formation and spiritual maturity. Empirical studies indicate that addiction arises from a combination of internal factors—including the need for recognition, emotional escape, and low self-control—and external factors such as ineffective parenting, peer pressure, and reward-based game design. Its impact extends beyond emotional, social, and academic impairment, affecting adolescents’ spirituality through diminished spiritual disciplines and weakened identity formation. Theologically, addiction is understood as a distortion of freedom and relational wholeness, hindering the adolescent’s growth toward maturity in Christ. This study emphasizes the necessity of a holistic pastoral response through relational guidance, family involvement, and the cultivation of spiritual disciplines as essential strategies for recovery and the strengthening of adolescents’ spiritual identity in the digital age.

Abstract

Psychological wounds among adolescents in church contexts often manifest in emotional dysregulation, relational difficulties, and disrupted spiritual development. While pastoral counseling has traditionally emphasized relational presence and spiritual formation, such approaches frequently rely on adolescents’ intrinsic motivation, which may be fragile during periods of psychological distress. Conversely, behavioral strategies that support habit formation are often viewed with caution in pastoral settings due to concerns about reductionism and theological incompatibility. Using a qualitative conceptual research design, this study employs a narrative literature review and conceptual thematic analysis to explore the theoretical feasibility of integrating the Premack Principle, a behavioral reinforcement strategy, with Henri Nouwen’s contemplative–relational spirituality within adolescent pastoral counseling. Drawing on interdisciplinary literature in behavioral psychology, pastoral theology, and spiritual formation, the synthesis suggests that while significant paradigmatic tensions exist between external reinforcement and grace-oriented spirituality, these approaches also demonstrate points of conceptual convergence. On this basis, the article proposes a preliminary integrative framework that reframes behavioral reinforcement as temporary scaffolding embedded within pastoral presence and spiritual formation. Rather than claiming empirical effectiveness, the study offers a propositional conceptual foundation to inform theological reflection, pastoral practice, and future empirical research in adolescent pastoral counseling.

Abstract

The issue of euthanasia presents a serious ethical, theological, and pastoral challenge within contemporary Christian communities. Congregants facing terminal illness, chronic suffering, and loss of dignity often experience deep psychological distress, spiritual confusion, and existential despair. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method through literature review, theological-biblical reflection, and integration of pastoral counseling approaches. The research aims to construct a pastoral theological framework that helps congregants process suffering without losing their sense of meaning, dignity, and faith. The findings demonstrate that an integrative pastoral approach rooted in the theology of grace, imago Dei, and redemptive suffering can provide effective emotional, spiritual, and relational support. The study concludes that the church is called to become a community of accompaniment that upholds life while offering compassionate care amid moral and existential dilemmas.

Abstract

Substance addiction is a multidimensional issue that not only damages physical and psychological well-being but also disrupts a person's identity, relationships, and spiritual life. From a Christian theological perspective, such damage reflects a distortion of the Imago Dei, the human vocation to mirror God’s character and will. This study aims to examine the restoration of the Imago Dei as a theological foundation for formulating a Christian counseling approach that can support holistic recovery from substance addiction. This research employs a qualitative approach through a literature study by reviewing theological works, Christian counseling literature, and studies related to addiction, which were then analyzed to identify principles relevant to identity and behavioral restoration. The findings indicate that recovery from addiction requires spiritual renewal and identity reconstruction through the work of Christ and intentional pastoral care. These insights suggest that Christian counseling grounded in the restoration of the Imago Dei may be oriented through spiritual assessment, spiritual reframing, emotional healing, behavioral transformation, relapse prevention, and supportive faith communities. This study concludes that the restoration of the Imago Dei provides a robust theological and practical framework for developing Christian counseling approaches that promote holistic human recovery, particularly in the areas of identity and spirituality.

Abstract

Anxiety is a multidimensional psychological phenomenon, encompassing emotional, cognitive, physical, and spiritual aspects. In psychology, anxiety is understood as an adaptive response to life's pressures, but it can develop into a disorder if it hinders an individual's functioning. Meanwhile, Christian theology views anxiety not only as a psychological issue, but also as something related to human relationships with God, the meaning of life, and dependence on faith. Therefore, Christian pastoral counselling is seen as a relevant holistic approach to dealing with anxiety. This study aims to examine the application of Christian pastoral counselling with a Solution-Focused Brief Counselling (SFBC) approach in helping individuals overcome anxiety. The method used is library research by reviewing books and scientific articles that discuss anxiety, pastoral counselling, and SFBC. The analysis was conducted systematically to obtain a comprehensive theoretical understanding. The results of the study indicate that the integration of SFBC in pastoral counselling is effective in helping counselees to concretise their anxiety problems, recognise their spiritual strengths and resources, and build hope oriented towards recovery. The SFBC approach, which focuses on solutions and the future, is in line with Christian theological values that emphasise hope, restoration, and God's presence. It is concluded that SFBC-based pastoral counselling is an applicable and theological approach to treating anxiety holistically.
