Abstract

Social networking apps have emerged as potentially useful new tools for improving second language vocabulary acquisition. The current research compares the growth of academic vocabulary knowledge in English. The purpose of this study is to compare the perspectives or views of the Department of English Education at Singaperbangsa Karawang University (UNSIKA). Online learning conducted during the Covid-19 Pandemic students using WhatsApp group media to traditional vocabulary instruction methods. The qualitative research method used in this study is a descriptive design with an explanation of the form of narrative related to the views of students in online learning during the pandemic. Data was collected through interviews specially semi structure interview based on interview guideline and data analysis by involving three students in the online learning process. The findings provide information about the learning process as well as the advantages and disadvantages of WhatsApp media. The interview results show that students in general have a positive attitude toward learning vocabulary through WhatsApp group media. However, technological limitations, unfamiliar presentation, and learning activities may prevent students from participating in a WhatsApp media lesson.

Abstract

Due to pandemic covid-19, the learning setting has changed from face-to-face to an online learning environment to prevent the further spread of infection. This change mostly affected the state of psychological, specifically anxiety issues. Specific anxiety called Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA) appears as anxiety affiliates with foreign language learning. Despite foreign language anxiety is evidenced to be hinder students’ achievements, there are only a few studies that have explored FLA in an online setting. Therefore, by using a case study, this research paper tried to investigate the factors of speaking anxiety of 5 students from different anxiety levels. These students were selected from a total of 30 students using the Foreign Language Anxiety Scale (FLCAS), which later be interviewed and asked to write a reflective journal. The result showed that some sources of each categorical factor (communication apprehension, test anxiety, fear of negative evaluation) can be classified as inter-lingual or intra-lingual factors. Moreover, some sources of factors have developed to new manifestations due to learning setting’ shifting. Additionally, as a part of communication apprehension, teachers’ bad teaching habits appeared as the most common factor to arise students’ speaking anxiety. Therefore, this study suggests teachers to evaluate their teaching habits, to reduce the influence of bad teaching habits on the students’ speaking anxiety.

Abstract

English writing, especially recount text writing, is a challenging skill for secondary school students in Indonesia due to difficulties in organizing ideas, grammar, and motivation. Project-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered approach that encourages active engagement through meaningful, collaborative projects. This qualitative case study investigated how PBL was implemented in teaching recount text writing and the challenges faced by the teacher. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with an English teacher applying Stoller’s ten-step PBL framework. The findings showed that the teacher successfully implemented most PBL stages, including theme selection, project structuring, information gathering, drafting, revising, presenting, and evaluation. Adaptations were made to address students’ limited grammar skills, vocabulary, and resource constraints. Challenges included students’ difficulties with self-assessment and inconsistent motivation. The study highlights the importance of balancing student autonomy with structured linguistic support and flexible resource use. These findings provide practical insights for teachers and curriculum developers aiming to improve writing instruction and student engagement in resource-limited EFL classrooms.

Abstract

This study provides a qualitative method to examine speaking instruction tactics used by English teachers. The purpose of this study is to look into the methods used by instructors in one of Karawang's junior high schools to teach English-speaking classes. This study also investigates the challenges experienced by English teachers when putting spoken instruction methodologies into practice. In the current study, a narrative analysis research design and a qualitative technique were used. Data was gathered through interviewing and observation. The results demonstrated how these tactics work together and demonstrate how they adhere to the tenets of modern language instruction. These tactics exhibit a communicative and learner-focused methodology. Furthermore, the challenges that educators encounter underscore the significance of establishing a communicative and encouraging atmosphere while instructing speaking, employing an array of techniques, and surmounting students' psychological obstacles to facilitate efficacious language acquisition. Students' speaking abilities and self-confidence are greatly aided by the teacher's facilitation and modelling of language.

Abstract

Textbooks are very influential for teachers and students in the learning process. This study aims to evaluate reading materials in textbooks. The researchers used an evaluation checklist framework developed by (Mohamed, 2013). The subject of this research is a textbook that uses an Merdeka curriculum. The result show that sufficient reading materials with a variety of texts is available in each chapter. Reading materials also helps students in reading comprehension. In addition to reading materials, it is also interesting and up-to-date by raising the latest issues. Then in terms of some reading, it is also easy with only a few paragraphs. In addition, the reading length corresponds to the textbook's grade level and uses several authentic materials. This means that this textbook is considered good in terms of reading materials. For the next research, can focus on other aspects such as speaking and listening materials.

Abstract

This research explores teachers’ perception in learning speaking toward onlne method in junior high school in Bekasi. This research used qualitative approach with case study method with purposive sampling. The site and participant of this research was three teachers from junior high school in Bekasi. Observation and interview as the instruments of this research. Findings of this research was (1) The student do not have a mobile phone, (2) Bad internet connection, (3) Student’s laziness during online learning, (4) The Importance of face-to-face in learning speaking skills. Considering the findings and responses from teachers’ the teachers’ perception in learning speaking toward online method in junior high school in Bekasi was lacking facilities and infrastructure in online learning for students, such as not having a cellphone, internet quota, etc. The bad internet connection that students often experience. Students become lazy about learning, especially when learning speaking Skills. For example, not responding when online learning takes place, not being disciplined when participating in online learning, being late in sending assignments, etc. English teachers have difficulty in measuring students’ understanding and abilities during online learning, especially speaking Skills.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the strategies employed by teacher’s in teaching speaking and to find out students respon while learning with this strategy. This investigation involves an English teacher and 11th-grade students from a high school in Jakarta. The research employs classroom observations and interviews to gather the necessary data. The findings of this study reveal that teachers utilize strategy such as role-playing, small-group discussions, and storytelling to teach speaking skills. When deciding on a teaching strategy, teachers first consider the specific characteristics of their students. Additionally, three common challenges were identified in students' speaking skills development: limited vocabulary proficiency, pronunciation issues, and a lack of self-assurance. Remarkably, the study indicates that students exhibited favorable reactions to the teacher's instructional strategies.

Abstract

Textbooks are one of the most important media in the English teaching-learning process. It plays a critical role for students and teachers in easing the teaching and learning processes. Using textbooks, teaching and learning processes are expected to run better, because teachers and students are facilitated in building an understanding of the ongoing material. Many subjects are presented in textbooks, such as small things done in daily life, food, movies, or culture from within and outside the country. This research aims to investigate Indonesian culture presented in the sixth-grade elementary English textbook entitled "Stairway: A Fun and Easy English Book.” This study focuses on analyzing one aspect of culture: products represented in the form of images and texts. This study used critical discourse analysis as the research design. The data in this study were obtained by reading the textbook, and the results showed that the textbook provides several Indonesian cultural products. Thus, the textbook writer introduced products commonly produced by Indonesians. Various products are shown by the book provider/writer through images and texts that refer to or discuss particular cultural aspects. There were four visual images and one text, indicating that the image belonged to the cultural aspect of the product. The pictures and text revealed cultural aspects in the form of buildings, clothes (uniform), food, and sports (traditional martial arts).

Abstract

Khoidir Ali Akbar, Student’s Perception In Collaborative Learning On Writing Class For Vocational High School. Department of English Education. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. University of Singaperbangsa Karawang. 2023. In the context of education at the high school level, the significance of effective writing skills cannot be understated. This qualitative study examines the perceptions of students from the mechanical engineering major at State Vocational High School 1 Karawang regarding collaborative learning in their writing class. The research, conducted through interviews with five respondents, aimed to explore the impact of collaborative writing on their engagement, writing skills, and exposure to diverse viewpoints. The findings indicate a positive influence of collaborative writing, enhancing students' writing abilities and facilitating exposure to a range of perspectives. However, the study also identifies challenges related to scheduling coordination and managing the variety of opinions within groups. Through an inclusive discussion of academic perspectives, this study highlights the various nature of collaborative writing as a potent tool for learning. In conclusion, collaborative writing in English class offers students an approach to improve their writing skills, develop their understanding of different perspectives, and valuable teamwork abilities. By addressing challenges and increasing the role of teachers in guiding students, collaborative writing can become an essential component of a comprehensive and improving educational experience.

Abstract

This research was trying to discover the implementation of strategy Directed Reading Thinking Activity in learning reading comprehension. The research questions of this study were how does the process of learning reading comprehension through Directed Reading Thinking Activity? Then what are the students’ responses in learning reading comprehension through Directed Reading Thinking Activity? To answer these research questions, the researcher conducted a qualitative research. The respondents were six students of class X in Vocational School Tri Jaya Sakti Karawang, Observation, interview, and documentations were used in this research. The process of learning reading comprehension through Directed Reading Thinking Activity showed in this research, from the first step until the last step of using Directed Reading Thinking Activity. The result showed that the students had a positive response toward Directed Reading Thinking Activity. The students’ responses in cognitive aspect were Directed Reading Thinking Activity strategy assisted the students to comprehend various texts, improved their ability to answer and generate questions, developed to predict what the author writes, assisted the students to think rationally, defined unfamiliar words, and concluded the next plot. Meanwhile, the students’ responses in affective aspect were Directed Reading Thinking Activity strategy supported students to overcome difficulties during reading text, it was practical, interactive, easy to do, and made the students discuss actively.
