Abstract

This study aims to scrutinize tertiary students? voices against the teacher/ lecturer who inspires them. This study elaborates on two classes of English Language Study Program as the respondents. The data use a questionnaire containing several questions that elaborated the teachers? characteristics that can generate inspiration to the students. This study was designed by using the survey. Based on the data obtained it can be concluded that the teachers/ lecturers who inspire (tertiary) students are those who have the unambiguous characteristics of English teachers both characteristics and competencies. They are capable to develop concepts/ provide material that encouraged students easily comprehends the material, to color the process of learning in class with humorous atmosphere, and to make students laugh and refresh and to give suggestions as well.

Abstract

Mengajar membaca di masa pandemi telah menjadi penhgalaman yang penting untuk situasi masa depan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi pengalaman guru bahasa Inggris pra-jabatan dalam mengajar pemahaman membaca di era pandemi COVID-19. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian kualitatif dan naratif inkuiri sebagai desain penelitian. Dua (2) guru bahasa Inggris pra-jabatan di sebuah universitas di Karawang, Jawa Barat, Indonesia berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara semi-terstruktur. Peneliti menggunakan analisis tematik dalam menganalisis data. Temuan menunjukan bahwa guru pra-jabatan melakukan persiapan yang matang terhadap materi dan media sebelum mengajar, menggunakan pendekatan berbasis genre sebagai pendekatan yang disukai, dan memberikan evaluasi dan umpan balik setelah proses pengajaran. Ditemukan juga bahwa siswa mudah bosan, sulit memahami teks, dan keterbatasan waktu dalam belajar dan tidak efektif. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat menjadi tolak ukur pengajaran pemahaman membaca selama masa pandemi. Peneliti - peniliti selanjutnya dapat mengeksplorasi lebih detail strategi – strategi yang digunakan dalam pembelajaran pemahaman membaca di masa pandemi.

Abstract

In this era, speaking is very important for all sectors, particularly in the field of education. But, most students tend to be reluctant to speak in English due to several factors. One of them, they have anxieties which enable them burdened to speak in the target language. Therefore, this research aims to investigate students experiences on speaking anxiety in virtual classroom presentation and to figure out the way to manage it. The researcher used qualitative research and used narrative inquiry as the research design. The data collected through semi-structured interview. Two participants from Senior High School students in Bekasi are required to fully participate in the interview. The result of this research showed that the students have afraid feelings to speak English, the students are blank while it starting in speaking, question and answer session is the biggest challenge for student in virtual classroom presentation and supporting to keep in the virtual classroom presentation is important suggestion to students who feel anxiety, and also the students reduce the anxiety with practice.

Abstract

Dalam konteks praktik pedagogis, keterampilan menulis memegang peranan penting untuk mendukung prestasi siswa. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana siswa terlibat dalam menulis teks deskriptif berbantuan Padlet dan untuk mendeskripsikan persepsi siswa tentang penggunaan Padlet sebagai media pembelajaran dalam teks deskriptif. Peneliti menggunakan penelitian kualitatif dan studi kasus sebagai desain penelitian. Partisipan penelitian ini adalah tiga siswa kelas XI salah satu SMA di Karawang, Indonesia. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan wawancara semi terstruktur. Peneliti menggunakan reduksi, display data, dan verifikasi untuk menganalisis data. Temuan dari penelitian ini adalah penggunaan Padlet dalam pembelajaran dapat digunakan untuk menulis teks deskriptif secara kolaboratif sehingga dapat meningkatkan siswa dapat menghasilkan hasil menulis kolaborasi dan dapat mengembangkan siswa lebih bebas menulis teks deskriptif menulis lebih bebas dalam mengekspresikan ide-ide mereka, serta menggali pengetahuan dan pengalaman siswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif. Namun aspek yang perlu diperhatikan saat menggunakan Padlet adalah koneksi internet yang tidak stabil. Selain itu, Peneliti menemukan bahwa siswa memiliki tanggapan positif tentang penggunaan Padlet dalam pembelajaran menulis teks deskriptif. Secara keseluruhan, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan Padlet dalam pembelajaran menulis teks deskriptif berpengaruh positif dalam membuat siswa lebih mudah mengungkapkan pikiran dan membantu selama proses pembelajaran menulis teks deskriptif. Untuk penelitian lain, peneliti menyarankan untuk mendeskripsikan strategi dan persepsi guru dalam menggunakan Padlet sebagai media pembelajaran dalam menulis teks deskriptif dalam kegiatan belajar mengajar.

Abstract

Though many previous studies have examined about authentic materials or jigsaw activity for reading classroom, it is still lack of study about integrating the authentic materials in a virtual reading classroom context. To fill this gap, this case study investigated about English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ engagement in virtual jigsaw reading with authentic texts. Drawing data from the observation and interview of four volunteer of secondary students, it was found that the students participated and interacted with others during the activity. In addition, the students performed self regulation as they divided the duties in the group. Finally, the students showed their enjoyment and interests in the reading activity.

Abstract

Teaching speaking during the pandemic has been an essential experience for the future situation. The aim of this research was to determine the strategy of EFL teachers in implementing asynchronous learning in speaking classes. The researchers used a narrative inquiry as the research design. It aims to obtain complete data and a comprehensive picture of how the teachers implement the asynchronous learning in speaking classroom. Data collection techniques was interviews and researchers used semi-structured interview as instrumentation. This research found that English teachers used to implement various strategies such as providing a suitable asynchronous platform, practicing dialogue, giving ideas or opinions, providing English learning videos, and singing a song, participants also explained that the strategies they used really helped them in carrying out speaking lessons in asynchronous classes. This research is expected to help teachers in choosing the right strategy for teaching speaking especially in asynchronous learning.

Abstract

Extensive reading has been suggested as one of the most successful ways to develop reading skills. The aim of this researchers is to investigate teachers’ strategy in involving students in extensive reading classes using digital novel media, and to explore the students' views in participating in. The data collection was carried out through observation and interviews. An English teacher and six students of class IX participated in this study. This researchers aimed to investigate the application of teachers involving students in extensive reading classes using digital novel media, and to explore the students' views in participating in extensive reading learning assisted by digital novels. This study uses qualitative researchers that focuses on students' experiences in reading extensively with the help of digital novels in making reviews. In addition, the researchers uses a narrative inquiry method to explore students' experiences of extensive reading with the help of digital novels. Researchers also use interviews to collect data and a list of questions as researchers instrumentation. The results show that the use of the digital novel in involving students in extensive reading classes makes students very active and enthusiastic in the extensive reading activities. the students enjoyed reading activities . In addition, students were interested in learning to read extensively because they felt that extensive reading activities assisted by digital novels make them accustomed to reading unconsciously. However, there are several challenges faced by the students such as difficulties in technical problems, some students also faced with poor signal connections problems. Furthermore, the students found that the use of the digital novels was more economical, practical, and accessible and attractive in design. Thus, students thought that the extensive reading technique mediated by digital novels is suitable for learning to read.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of Wordwall.net in vocabulary learning for junior high school students. Vocabulary is fundamental in language acquisition, but traditional methods often fail to engage students, leading to poor outcomes. This research employs a qualitative case study approach to examine how Wordwall.net enhances vocabulary learning by making the process more interactive and enjoyable. Conducted in a junior high school in Karawang, the study involved four grade VIII students and used interviews, observations, and document analysis as data collection methods. The findings reveal that Wordwall.net significantly improves student engagement and vocabulary retention. Teachers played a crucial role in selecting appropriate activities, preparing lessons, and addressing challenges post-learning. Students responded positively to the platform, citing increased interaction, ease of use, and a more enjoyable learning experience. Despite its advantages, challenges remain, including the need for appropriate selection criteria and effective post-learning reinforcement. The study concludes that Wordwall.net is an effective tool in enhancing vocabulary learning, fostering a more dynamic and interactive classroom environment. Additionally, it highlights the importance of ongoing teacher support and training to maximize the platform's potential and address any limitations that may arise during its use, particularly in different educational contexts.
