Abstract

Fatayat NU (Nahdlatul Ulama) and Muslimat NU are grassroots community organizations with millions of members throughout Indonesia. They are women and mothers who support their families in education and even the economy. From observations and searches and excavations, it is found that the phenomenon is that they are the ones who continue to drive the family economy during the pandemic when husbands and fathers lose their jobs due to PPKM regulations and also mass dismissals in many companies and other institutions. In addition, many husbands and fathers have died due to Covid-19 and comorbidities. Their economic resilience needs to be supported and encouraged to continue to develop even more in order to improve their welfare and that of future generations. Their economic model that utilizes the existing environment and availability as well as social capital of mutual assistance between members whose culture has been created for a long time can become a pattern that is developed, modified, and expanded its reach for other communities.

Abstract

This research presents a reinterpretation of the Lawang Bledheg ornamentation found in the Great Mosque of Demak, Central Java, Indonesia. The study explores the profound connections between architectural ornamentation and the message conveyed in the referenced Quranic verses through an interdisciplinary approach combining aesthetic and symbolic analysis. By conducting on-site observations, examining historical records, and analyzing Islamic artistic conventions, the research unveils the symbolic meanings embedded within the Lawang Bledheg ornaments. The findings demonstrate that the ornaments represent a fusion of local Javanese artistic traditions and Islamic influences, creating a unique cultural synthesis. The research also highlights the symbolism of unity, tolerance, and religious harmony depicted through the motifs, patterns, and decorative elements of the Lawang Bledheg ornament. These symbols resonate with the themes present in Surah Ali Imran verses 133-136, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the Great Mosque of Demak as a sacred space. By shedding light on the aesthetic and symbolic aspects of the Lawang Bledheg ornamentation, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the mosque's cultural significance, encourages interfaith dialogue, and inspires contemporary architectural designs. The findings enrich art history, architecture, and religious studies, offering valuable insights into the intricate relationship between art, spirituality, and cultural heritage.

Abstract

This paper explores the intricate relationship between architecture and taste, focusing on mechanisms that enable architecture to enhance aesthetic preferences and sensory experiences. It delves into the impact of architecture on taste through the education of public taste, the development of interactive models, and the establishment of an architectonic language of communication. These mechanisms serve as vehicles to broaden public appreciation, deepen individual understanding, and personalize architectural aesthetics. The research investigates the potential for architecture to extend beyond the visual by integrating touch, taste, and smell, providing a more inclusive, multisensory experience. It examines how digital modeling, 3D printing, and edible materials can be utilized to season and flavor the built environment, making it uniquely immersive and responsive to personal taste. Furthermore, the study acknowledges the influence of socio-cultural and economic factors on architectural preferences and the importance of catering to diverse tastes. Employing qualitative methods, this research contributes insights from discussions that reveal the evolving nature of architecture's role in shaping taste. Findings underscore architecture's capacity to evolve as a medium for cultural expression, fostering inclusivity, emotional resonance, and dynamic adaptation in the built environment. These insights offer valuable perspectives for architects, designers, and policymakers as they strive to create spaces that reflect the diverse tastes and preferences of society

Abstract

Vernacular architecture critically reflects a community's cultural heritage, social structure, and economic dynamics. In Kampung Inggris Pare, Kediri, the architectural landscape has evolved alongside the village’s transformation into a prominent language learning hub. This paper explores how vernacular architecture embodies local traditions, facilitates social interactions, and adapts to economic shifts driven by the growth of language course institutions. The study addresses key questions: How does architecture in Kampung Inggris reflect cultural identity and tradition? How does it shape social dynamics and relationships? How has economic development influenced architectural evolution? What challenges does modernization pose to preserving cultural heritage? This research uses a qualitative literature study to analyze secondary data from academic journals, books, and reports on architecture, social dynamics, and economic changes in Kampung Inggris. Content analysis and preliminary ethnographic study were employed to identify patterns in architectural design, community engagement, and economic transformation. Findings reveal that vernacular architecture in Kampung Inggris integrates cultural symbols and reflects traditional Javanese cosmology, reinforcing community identity. Communal spaces within the architectural layout promote interaction and collaboration, fostering a sense of belonging among residents and visitors. However, economic growth, driven by the proliferation of language courses, has led to structural adaptations that accommodate businesses and students, raising land values and entrepreneurial opportunities. Conversely, modernization threatens to overshadow traditional architectural elements, risking cultural identity loss. This study concludes that a balanced approach to modernization and heritage preservation is essential to sustain Kampung Inggris' unique architectural identity while supporting its economic vitality.

Abstract

The degradation of coastal environments and the loss of cultural identity in heritage architecture due to climate change and urban development have raised concerns about the relevance of traditional symbols in promoting sustainability. In the case of Masjid Agung Demak—Indonesia’s oldest mosque and a spiritual legacy of the Wali Songo—the presence of the bulus (softshell turtle) motif in the mihrab invites deeper reflection on its contemporary significance. This research investigates how the bulus, traditionally viewed as a symbol of balance and resilience in Javanese cosmology, can be scientifically reinterpreted as an ecological and cultural emblem within Islamic architectural heritage. The objective of this study is to explore the potential of the bulus motif to inform regenerative conservation strategies that integrate spiritual symbolism with environmental sustainability. Using a qualitative method that combines architectural semiotics, cultural anthropology, and sustainability discourse analysis, the study identifies the bulus as a nexus of spiritual, ecological, and communal meanings. Findings reveal that the motif is not merely decorative but functions as a biocultural signifier that embodies Islamic-Javanese values of patience, adaptability, and environmental stewardship. Recontextualizing the bulus within sustainability narratives enables a participatory model of heritage conservation that fosters local ecological awareness and reinforces community resilience amid ongoing environmental challenges.

Abstract

This paper explores the multifaceted role of Islamic architecture as a symbol of cultural and religious identity, emphasizing its significance in fostering community cohesion and inclusivity. How does Islamic architecture reflect cultural and religious identity and contribute to community cohesion and inclusivity? The objective is to analyze the principles, values, and adaptability of Islamic architecture within the context of cultural diversity and modernity, emphasizing its role in preserving identity and promoting unity. A qualitative research approach was employed, involving a comprehensive review of literature and analysis of historical and contemporary examples of Islamic architecture worldwide. The study incorporated architectural design principles, cultural influences, and societal impacts as key analytical lenses. Islamic architecture transcends mere physical structures; it embodies core values such as privacy, neighborhood rights, social solidarity, moderation, equity, sincerity, and aesthetic values. Mosques, in particular, symbolize faith and serve as spaces for communal worship and engagement. This architectural heritage demonstrates the adaptability of Islamic architecture to diverse cultural influences while retaining its distinctive identity. Moreover, it continues to evolve, expressing local Islamic identities and meeting the needs of modern society. Islamic architecture plays a pivotal role in fulfilling the determinations of the Holy Scriptures and forging sacred connections with individuals. It fosters a profound sense of belonging, spirituality, and inclusivity within the Muslim community, contributing to cultural heritage and unity that transcends borders and time.
