Abstract

This research was picturing the society of Ahmadiyah (which consistsof only ten families) in Kudus, Central Java. On one hand this community can be so adaptive to outers (non-Ahmadiyah people) such as joining their yasiinan or manaqiban groups and attending neighborhood meetings  and can be so exclusive on the other hand. By exclusive here means that the Ahmadiyah people in Kudus will recite the quran and perform daily prayers together with themselves in their own mosque (Ahmadi mosque). The acceptance of Ahmadiyah in Kudus began when in 1989 some people in Kudus looked for physical and spiritual tranquility to Ahmadi  people in Gabus, Pati, Central Java. The Ahmadi people of Gabus  then taught them sesorah (Ahmadi teachings) which was suitable  with them so that the Ahmadi teaching then well received.  Kinship and patron client (employer-employee) relationship are two significant factors for the Ahmadiyah recruitment. The Ahmadiyah in Kudus could exist for the “center” (Bogor) sends them religious teachers who teach  and lead their daily prayers in their own masjid. This masjid is built on a  piece of land given by Ahmadi people. In order for their existence among local  people not to be regarded such as creating “water and oil” relationship,  Ahmadi people perform some social events which more outers are involved  in, such as inviting them to halal bihalal forum and blood donor.

Abstract

This article discusses about the debate over death penalty in the drug abuse cases. The Constitutional Court on October 30th, 2007 on the judicial review of Article 80 of the Law No 22/1997 on Drug declared that death penalty is not violating the Constitution which guarantees the right to life. Furthermore, Indonesia has ratified the International convention on narcotics and psychotropic. On the other hand, the opponent of death penalty argues that death penalty violates Article 28A of the Amendment of the Constitution that all people have the right to life. Secondly, death penalty is cruel and inhumane. Thirdly, there is possibility for false trial, and fourth, death penalty is not in-line with the reformation of penal law which imposes on restorative justice instead of retributive. Fifth, the effect is just a myth and sixth, the family becomes co-victim. Seventh, death penalty also threatened Indonesian living abroad and the last, death penalty cause the loss of Indonesia in International relations.

Abstract

The purpose of writing this text is presenting to give readers an understanding that Kudus is a plural city. There are Muslims, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhists, Confucians, Christians with various denominations, Adventist Christian congregations and also people of indigenous religions. This manuscript data was obtained through interview, discussion, and observation with a qualitative descriptive approach. The initial embryo of the Adventist congregation in Kudus due to the removal of workers in Kudus, they joined their worship in Pati, a neighboring city. In the course of time, there were other Adventists in Kudus so the congregation was held at a house in Kudus and served by Adventist pastors. There is strong family ties supporting the church even though the number does not increase significantly. During the New Order era, they were rejected by Islamic organizations when they were about to establish a church. With the patience of the congregation, the congregation and other Adventist religious activities are now centralized in a housing complex in Kudus in the house of the priest and his families.
