Abstract

[The Discourse of Ahl al-Sunnah’s Hadith in Pesantren: The Study of the Book Hujja Ahl al-Sunna wa al-Jama'a by Kyai Ali Ma'sum Krapyak. The discourse of hadith cannot be separated from the practice of everyday people's lives. All religious traditions are built on the foundation of the second source in Islam, hadith. At present, the studies of hadith in Islamic boarding schools almost get less interesting attention to discuss, even the study of hadith in pesantren occupies the umpteenth position compared to other scientific studies, such as Islamic law, ethics, or tafseer. Therefore, the various works of contemporary Indonesian scholars in the field of hadith that were born from the womb of pesantren are very minimal. This article will specifically discuss the book Hujja Ahl al-Sunna wa al-Jama'a, the work of the great scholar Kyai Ali Maksum, Krapyak Yogyakarta. This book existed to meet the needs of the Nahdliyyin community with arguments that form the basis of religious practice. One of them examines the debate about the traditions of ahl al-sunna wa al-jama'a, especially those that become the arguments of the ahl al-sunna wa al-jama'a group, which often lead to discourses on the practice of sunni groups such as the grave pilgrimage, tahlilan, and the determination of the beginning of the fasting month between ru’ya and hisab. The work that was born from pesantren is a form of commitment to fighting bid'a discourses and a very inclusive and rigid understanding of Islam in addressing the traditions that develop in society. This research resulted in rejection and confirmation of the allegations of heresy narrated against the ahl al-sunna wa al-jama'a group.]

Abstract

The Idea of The Muslim World, A Global Intellectual History | Cemil Aydin | London: Harvard University Press, 2017. The notion of "The Muslim World" as a binary point of opposition to "The West" has become a global narrative, accepted by many Muslims and non-Muslims alike. In fact, Muslims reside in different parts of the world, speak different languages, live in different traditions and cultures, and have different nationalities and political interests. Besides, the those who believe in notions of the Muslim world have rarely discussed or imagined the Christian world, the Buddhist world, and so on in similar terms. Thus, how did this narrative about the 'Muslim World' come into being and become a mainstream belief in the modern world? This issue constitutes the main point of discussion in Cemil Aydin's book, as the title suggests, "The Idea of The Muslim World." Questions such as who, when, how, and why this notion arose and persists in the modern era are discussed.

Abstract

Technological advances have transformed the presentation of tafsir (Qur’an commentary) across various media, from oral traditions to manuscripts, printed books, and now digital platforms. This study explores whether these platforms merely serve as vessels or actively influence a mufassir’s (Qur’an interpreter’s) approach. Focusing on Tafsir al-Qur’an Aktual, published on Bangsaonline.com, it examines how the medium affects interpretative processes. Written by Ahmad Musta’in Syafi’i, a prominent pesantren leader in East Java, this tafsir has appeared in Harian Bangsa newspaper since March 2000, marking the first Indonesian tahlīli tafsir in a newspaper. Employing Howard Giles’ Communication Accommodation Theory, the study reveals that the newspaper medium shaped Musta’in’s interpretations to accommodate lay readers. This influence is reflected in his language style, word choice, and the inclusion of Javanese terms. He also links verses to everyday events to ensure relevance for his audience. However, the study identifies instances of “overaccommodation,” where Musta’in connects verses to contemporary sociopolitical issues, occasionally deviating from their original meanings. This phenomenon, termed “obsessiveactualization,” underscores the media’s role in shaping a mufassir’s interpretative process.

Abstract

Existing studies on Islamic religious authority have been focusing on its construction within Muslim communities and networks. This study offers a contrasting perspective, arguing that Islamic religious authority can be built within a network of different religions, which has been possible thanks to social media algorithms. This study adopts the concept of algorithmic authority coined by Clay Shirky, which is grounded on individuals based on their influence and digital footprint. This study employs Nethnography method to observe the online visibility of Ustadz Dennis Lim through non-Muslim influencers' podcasts. The findings show that Dennis’s presence in the podcasts has played a significant role in building his religious authority. The findings are reinforced by Google Trends data, which indicate an increase in Google searches related to Dennis, aligning with the release of these podcasts. Furthermore, interviews with Dennis, his media team, manager and offline congregants were conducted to understand their views on the podcasts. The interviews reveal that such podcasts do not always reflect the pluralist views of Indonesian Muslims. Rather, they engage with such content in the hope that their idolized non-Muslim influencers will eventually embrace Islam through repeated interactions with a Muslim preacher in the podcasts.
