Abstract

Social media has opened space for practically anyone to interpret the Qur’an, thus the contestation of tafsir cannot be avoided. The term e-tafsir in this article refers to the Quranic interpretations that appear in the digital space through new media (both website and social media). This study employs a digital ethnography method by investigating and observing various websites related to the Quranic interpretations. It focuses on popular Islamic websites such as tafsiralquran.id, ibtimes.id, and buletinkaffah.com, which regularly uploaded Islamic articles between 2020 and 2023. The research argues that social media has resulted in the proliferation of e-tafsir, including conservative (textualist) interpretations of the Qur’an. Furthermore, the author contends that to reduce radicalism in Indonesia, it is not enough to block conservative websites; it should be countered by spreading moderate Quranic interpretations. This article unveils the contestation of e-tafsir in Indonesia, which may also occur in other digitalizing Muslim worlds.

Abstract

This paper examines how Facebook is transforming religious authority and amplifying sectarian discussions through digital sermons (waʿẓ) delivered by three prominent preach-ers in Bangladesh: Shaykh Dr. Muzaffar b. Mohsin, Muftī Rezaul Karim Abrar, and Muftī Gias Uddin Tahery. Using a netnographic approach, we analyse the discourses promoted in their sermon videos on Facebook. We demonstrate how Facebook incentivises religious leaders to intensify sectarianism in order to increase online engagement and reinforce their authority. Thus, although the Internet—specifically Facebook—is often assumed to have the potential to connect the Muslim umma, it simultaneously exacerbates sectarian divi-sions, with significant implications for both religious and social dynamics in Bangladesh.

Abstract

This study examines the involvement of Indonesian youth and Muslimphilanthropy NGOs in the promotion of inter-faith harmony throughcrowdfunding. Crowdfunding or online fundraising has been rapidly growing inIndonesia. It has been used to respond to various issues, among which is religiousviolence. Oftentimes, when radical acts happened in Indonesia, people turnedto crowdfunding to express inter-faith solidarity and support. This study drawsfrom the concept of networked social movement to explain the characteristicsof crowdfunding campaigns for inter-faith harmony. This concept highlightscontemporary online movements that are spontaneous, leaderless, and temporalin nature which is distinct from the well-organized movements commonly studiedby scholars. This study employs digital ethnography on campaigns that respondedto religious violence in the largest crowdfunding platform in Indonesia, Kitabisa, which is complemented by interviews with the campaign initiators and Muslimphilanthropy NGOs. This article argues that the characteristics of network social movement fit with the current youth generation that is assumed to be sociallyapathetic and more immersed in developing themselves and consuming media.Nevertheless, despite the spontaneous and temporal tenets, the youth’s inter-faithmovements were able to mobilize a significant number of donations and attractMuslim NGOs that were often perceived to be sectarian to support the inter-faithcampaigns. The findings of this study contribute to the studies on Indonesianyouth, Islamic philanthropy, and the state of inter-faith relations in Indonesia, which was argued to be experiencing a conservative turn.

Abstract

Existing studies on Islamic religious authority have been focusing on its construction within Muslim communities and networks. This study offers a contrasting perspective, arguing that Islamic religious authority can be built within a network of different religions, which has been possible thanks to social media algorithms. This study adopts the concept of algorithmic authority coined by Clay Shirky, which is grounded on individuals based on their influence and digital footprint. This study employs Nethnography method to observe the online visibility of Ustadz Dennis Lim through non-Muslim influencers' podcasts. The findings show that Dennis’s presence in the podcasts has played a significant role in building his religious authority. The findings are reinforced by Google Trends data, which indicate an increase in Google searches related to Dennis, aligning with the release of these podcasts. Furthermore, interviews with Dennis, his media team, manager and offline congregants were conducted to understand their views on the podcasts. The interviews reveal that such podcasts do not always reflect the pluralist views of Indonesian Muslims. Rather, they engage with such content in the hope that their idolized non-Muslim influencers will eventually embrace Islam through repeated interactions with a Muslim preacher in the podcasts.
