Abstract

Background: Refractive disorder is circumstance in which the eye fails to focus the light coming from an object onto the retina resulting in blurred shadows. One of the risk factors that cause or increase the progressivity of refractive disorder is environmental factors. Environmental factors are avoidable factors and are related to the social aspects of a child, such as a child's habitual patterns in carrying close range activities (reading, using a computer, playing video games, and watching television), and also outdoor activities. Objective: To examine the correlation between student activity patterns and the occurrence of refractive disorder. Methods: This study used an analytical method with a cross sectional design. The data used are primary data obtained directly through visus examination with the Snellen Chart and filling out questionnaires by elementary school students. Results: Based on the results of the Chi-square test, it was found that there was a significant relationship (p < 0,05) between the duration, distance and position of the body when reading books with the occurrence of refractive disorder. There was also a significant relationship (p < 0,05) between duration, distance and body position when using gadgets with the occurrence of refractive disorder. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between the activity patterns of the students when reading books and when using gadgets with the occurrence of the refractive disorder.

Abstract

Background: Myopia is the most common refractive disorder and is a global concern because it can cause more serious eye problems. Excessive prolonged axial growth of the eyeball can lead to myopia. The amplitude of accommodation is the strength of the eye accommodation during the minimum and maximum accommodation conditions. Based on the above data, the researchers wanted to assess the relationship between eyeball length and accommodation amplitude in myopia patients. Method: The research was conducted at the Hospital of Prof CPL University of North Sumatra from November 2023 to March 2024. Data analysis was done analytically and presented in the form of data tabulation. Result: This study included 54 myopia patients, 27 males and 27 females, who visited the eye clinic. The mean age of the subjects was (52%). The mean age of the subjects was 23 years old with the youngest being 22 years old and the oldest being 24 years old. The mean of axial length for mild myopia, moderate myopia and severe myopia were 24.51 cm, 25.75 cm and 28.38 cm respectively. The lowest NPA value was found in severe myopia (27.33 cm) and the highest in mild myopia (43 cm). The lowest NPC value was found in mild myopia (36.61 cm) and the highest in severe myopia (38.56 cm). There was a significant relationship between eyeball length and accommodation amplitude with a Spearman correlation value of -0.685 as well as after cycloplegic administration with a Spearman correlation value of 0.438. NPA values showed an increase when receiving spherical correction, whether accompanied by cycloplegics or not, and a decrease when not receiving spherical correction. NPC values showed a decrease in all treatments. Conclusion: There is a correlation between axial length and amplitude of accomodation values (NPA and NPC) in patients with myopia.

Abstract

Myopia is currently a major global public health problem causing significant vision loss and is a risk factor for more serious ocular conditions. Weight gain in adolescents has increased significantly in recent years due to lack of physical activity, increased caloric intake, and comfort in indoor environments. Weight gain is also the most common cause of dyslipidemia in adolescents. This is an observational analytic study with a cross sectional design. The study was conducted at Prof. CPL Universitas Sumatera Utara General Hospital from March 2023 until July 2023. Data analysis was carried out analytically and presented in the form of data tabulations. This study was attempted by 50 subjects with myopia who visited the Eye Polyclinic. Most of the subjects in this study were female, totaling 26 people (52%). The mean age of the subjects was 20.92 years with the youngest was 13 years old and the oldest was 24 years old. The mean height and weight measurements respectively were 1.63+0.1 m and 68.74+19.87 kg. Based on body mass index, most of the subjects were in normal cathegories accounted for 20 subjects (40%). Based on cholesterol levels, subjects with mild myopia showed a mean value of 206.84 mg/dL, those with moderate myopia had a mean of 190.94 mg/dL and severe myopia had a mean of 207.36 mg/d. Nutritional status have no significant correlation to the degree of myopia in adolescents at Prof. CPL Universitas Sumatera Utara General Hospital.

Abstract

Background. Myopia is one of the refractive errors where parallel light from infinity is focused in front of the retina without accommodation. Various cytokines have been implicated in the development of myopia, including interleukin-6 (IL6) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2). IL-6 is one of the pro-inflammatory cytokines that play a role in ocular disease pathology. Chronic subclinical inflammation may play a role in elongation of the eyeball, inflammation promotes the breakdown of the scleral extracellular matrix and results in axial elongation. Objective. To determine the relationship of interleukin-6 levels and the degree of myopia in young adults in North Sumatra University Hospital. Methods. This research is an analytic observational study with a case control design, held from February 2022. Primary and secondary data are collected from interviews and direct observation. Bivariate analysis of differences in interleukin-6 levels in myopia and emmetropia uses T-independent test, if the data are normally distributed. If the data are not normally distributed, then the Mann Whitney test is used. Bivariate analysis to analyze differences in interleukin-6 levels based on the degree of myopia uses the Kruskal Wallis test, followed by a post hoc test using the Mann Whitney test and t-independent. Results. A total sample consists of 30 patients who suffer from myopia and 30 control samples. The mean age in the myopia group was 28.87 years with the youngest age being 25 years and oldest age 34 years. Most of them are moderate myopia with 15 people (50%). There was no significant difference in interleukin-6 levels between myopia and control groups (p = 0.147). There was a difference in the mean level of interleukin-6 based on the degree of myopia (p = 0.005). Conclusions. There is an association between interleukin-6 levels and the degree of myopia in young adult patients. No differences in interleukin-6 levels were found significant between myopia and control groups.
