Abstract

Abstract Introduction & Objectives : To determine correlation between axial length and melatonin serum levels (mel) in teenagers with myopia Methods : This research is an analytic observational with a case control design. A total of 52 subjects with myopia eyes in the study and control group. Results : The average melatonin level in the case group was 179.67 pg/mL (SD = 146.48 pg/mL) in the control group, the average was 111.56 pg/mL (SD = 48.72 pg/mL). Melatonin levels were highest in the group of subjects with severe myopia with an average of 250.36 pg/mL (SD = 304.89), moderate myopia with an average of 188.93 pg / mL (SD = 131 pg/mL), and the lowest melatonin levels in the emmetropic group with a mean of 111.56 pg/mL (SD = 48.72 pg/mL). Using the Kruskal Wallis test showed that there were differences in melatonin levels based on the degree of myopia (p = 0.278). Melatonin levels differed significantly between emmetropic subjects with mild myopia (p = 0.014), moderate myopia (p = 0.012). However, there was no difference in melatonin levels between subjects with emmetropia and severe myopia (p = 0.338) Conclusion : There was no significant correlation between melatonin levels and axial length (p = 0.401) and the degree of myopia (p = 0.055)

Abstract

Background: Refractive disorder is circumstance in which the eye fails to focus the light coming from an object onto the retina resulting in blurred shadows. One of the risk factors that cause or increase the progressivity of refractive disorder is environmental factors. Environmental factors are avoidable factors and are related to the social aspects of a child, such as a child's habitual patterns in carrying close range activities (reading, using a computer, playing video games, and watching television), and also outdoor activities. Objective: To examine the correlation between student activity patterns and the occurrence of refractive disorder. Methods: This study used an analytical method with a cross sectional design. The data used are primary data obtained directly through visus examination with the Snellen Chart and filling out questionnaires by elementary school students. Results: Based on the results of the Chi-square test, it was found that there was a significant relationship (p < 0,05) between the duration, distance and position of the body when reading books with the occurrence of refractive disorder. There was also a significant relationship (p < 0,05) between duration, distance and body position when using gadgets with the occurrence of refractive disorder. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between the activity patterns of the students when reading books and when using gadgets with the occurrence of the refractive disorder.

Abstract

Myopia is the most common ophthalmic condition worldwide, with an estimated 22.9% of the population or 1.406 billion people affected. Studies of candidate gene-associated refraction abnormalities have also identified several genes that cause vulnerability myopia, including the hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and  hepatocyte growth factor receptor (MET) genes. The purpose of the study was to analyze the correlation between hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) levels, degrees of myopia, and long axial in adolescents with myopia treated as outpatients in Universitas Sumatera Utara Hospital. This study applied the cross-sectional analytical approach. The inclusion criterion for the participants was patients diagnosed as suffering from myopia by the Ophthalmology Outpatient Clinic of the Universitas Sumatera Utara Hospital. Sampling was performed consecutively with a minimum sample size of 25 patients in control group and 25 patients in the case group. This study revealed that the mean axial length of the right eye in the case group was 23.82 mm, with a significant difference in the axial length between the case and control groups. The mean HGF level in the myopia group was 510.49 ng/mL, which was not significantly different from the mean HGF level in the control or emmetropic group. The HGF levels were highest in the group of subjects with moderate myopia, with an average of 551.87 ng/mL, and differences in HGF levels were identified in different degrees of myopia. Thus, no significant correlation is identified between the HGF levels, axial length, and myopia degree.

Abstract

Introduction: Pneumonia is known as a primary contributor to hospital admissions among toddlers globally. Numerous factors influence the duration of hospitalization in toddlers with pneumonia, one of them is nutritional status. This study aims to ascertain the correlation between nutritional status and the duration of hospitalization in pediatric pneumonia patients. Methods: This was an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design. The study samples were children aged 2-59 months with pneumonia who were hospitalized in the period January 2022-January 2024 selected through the consecutive method. After calculating using the Slovin formula, a minimum sample size of 67 people was required. Data were analyzed through univariate analysis and bivariate analysis through chi-square through SPSS software version 27. Results: Of the 77 patients, the majority were aged 12-59 months (61%), male (55.8%), well-nourished (62.3%), and length of stay ≤5 days (55.8%). The bivariate analysis found no relationship between nutritional status and the length of stay of pneumonia patients under five with a p-value = 0.422 (p-value > 0.05). Conclusion: There is no relationship between nutritional status and the length of stay of pneumonia patients under five.
