Abstract

The research aimed to determine the pattern of changes in serum levels of NT-3 in the improvement of diabetic neuropathy, after doing diabetic foot exercise. A true experimental study with randomaized pre – post test control trial. A total of 36 subjects meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the exercise group or the control one with age matched systematic random sampling method. Exercise group had a significant improvement on the score of ABI (p.0.002), systolic blood pressure (p.0.014), diastolic blood pressure (p.0.055), DNS (p.0.01), DNE (p.0.001) and increased of serum level of NT-3 (p.0.049). Control group had result respectively on ABI (p.0.131), systolic blood pressure (p.0.668), diastolic blood pressure (p.0.216), DNS (p.1.00), DNE (p.0.543), and increase of NT-3 (p.0.264). The comparation results of the two groups had a significant different on the score of ABI (p.0.01), systolic blood pressure (p.0.01), diastolic blood pressure (p.0.01), DNS (p.0.01), DNE (p.0.01), and increased of NT-3 (p.0.01). Diabetic foot exercise had a peripheral affect on a clinically significant improvement based on ABI scores, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, DNS and DNE, and increase of serum level of NT-3.

Abstract

Objectives: The clock drawing test (CDT) is a widely used cognitive screening tool that has been well accepted. However, it is still questionable which scoring system is the best. We assessed the correlation of five common scoring methods of the CDT with Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), and intercorrelations between each different scoring system. Methods: CDT scores of different scoring systems from participants from the geriatric club in Pondok Kopi Jakarta Islamic Hospital, were compared. The CDT was scored according to the methods of Rouleau, Babins, Mendez, Lin, and Shulman. Correlation coefficients between the five scoring methods of the CDT with MMSE were calculated, as well as the intercorrelations between each different scoring system. Results: The study sample consisted of 106 non-demented subjects, aged between 60 and 77 years. The five scoring methods of the CDT correlated significantly with MMSE, but correlation coefficients were moderate (r = 0.43 to r = 0.46). The highest was Lin's method (r = 0.46). Especially, correlation coefficients between the five scoring methods of the CDT with MMSE attention domain were higher (r = 0.42 to r = 0.52). The intercorrelations between each different scoring system were high (r = 0.87 to r = 0.99). The correlation coefficients between Rouleau's method with Mendez's method was the highest (r = 0.99). Conclusions: The correlation of five common scoring methods of the CDT with MMSE were moderate positive. The CDT scored according to the method of Lin was the highest. The intercorrelations between each different scoring system were high.

Abstract

Pycnarrhena cauliflora (Miers.) Diels., local name sengkubak, is one of indigenous plants from West Kalimantan that has been used as natural flavor. Pycnorrhena cauliflora is one of species of Menispermaceae family which is rich in bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids. This alkaloids are known to have various biological activities including antiprotozoal, antiplasmodial, antifungal and antibacterial activities. This study aimed to investigate antimicrobial activity of the P. cauliflora (Miers.) Diels. methanolic extracts against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The methanolic extract of P. cauliflora (Miers.) Diels., root, leaf and stem were prepared by maceration. The disk-diffusion method was then used to determine the antimicrobial activity of the extracts against Streptococcus pyogenes, S. mutants, Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, Salmonella typhi, Shigella flexneri, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli after 18-24 h incubation at 37 oC. Amoxicillin was used as positive control for gram-positive bacteria and ciprofloxacin was used as gram-negative bacteria. The inhibition zones were then measured in mm. Analysis were conducted in duplicates. The results showed in general the methanolic extracts of P. cauliflora (Miers.) Diels. root (inhibition zone diameter= 10-23 mm) were more active than that leaf (0-15 mm) and stem (0-17 mm) extracts against gram-positive bacteria. The zone inhibition diameter of amoxicillin as positive control was 8-42 mm. In addition, the methanolic extracts of P. cauliflora (Miers.) Diels. root (12-17 mm) were also more active than that leaf (0-12 mm) and stem (0-12 mm) extracts against gram-negative bacteria. The zone inhibition diameter of ciprofloxacin as positive control was 33-36 mm. In conclusion, the methanolic extract of P. caulifloria (Miers.) Diels. root is the most extract active against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Further study will be focused to isolate active compounds in the methanolic extract of the root.
