Abstract

Abstract_ Public open space has a significant effect on the welfare of urban communities. The objective of this study was to produce design recommendations for rebuilding the square facilities for the better, in terms of having a positive impact on welfare. Due to the increasing public need for public space, the Andi Makkasau square in the city of Parepare has undergone significant changes in accommodating the activities of its users. Some facilities were added, such as fitness equipment, communal seating, main stage, music stage, and toilet. As a result, this square provided multiple uses. However, the availability of these uses did not reveal the effectiveness of that space. The renovation of Andi Makkasau square was expected to pay attention to changes in the arrangement of available facilities. By using the behavioral mapping method, this study could explain the relationship between users and facilities of open space. Through the sketches and symbols from the observations made in the morning and evening using the place center map method, user behavior was known to the facilities used in the Andi Makkasau square. The method used to analyze the facility's performance; this study used the post-occupancy evaluation (POE). The results showed that the renovation of this plaza did not support the attributes of most of its users, so recommendations for future designs were needed. Keywords: Behavioral Mapping; Public Open Space; Place Centre Map; Public Facilities.

Abstract

The increasing of people’s demand on waterfront public space has motivated the waterfront concept that meet the visitor needs. One way to know public space design has met visitor needs is from understanding the preference on public space. Because of those demands, few spaces have emerged in Parepare, one of them is Senggol Beach. Waterfront public space has developed into two distinct spaces. This distinction create a contrast condition which enables people to pick one of the space between them. The huge difference in visitor number potentially creates unbalance to both of spaces. Therefore, Senggol Beach would not be optimal. In this case, public space clearly require the understanding of visitor needs through understanding of their preference. The purpose of this study is to analyze the space aspect which underlying the choice of space in the waterfront. This research method is mixed-method. While, this research design is cross-sectional using cross tabulation and biplot image analysis. Through questionnaire survey, respondents which consist of 85 people were asked to choose one of the spaces which they liked, including their reason to like it according to space aspects. The result shows that 66% respondents like A space and 35% like B space. The reason of many respondents is regarding facilities aspect. Therefore, available designs in B space does not satisfy most respondent’s preference.

Abstract

Enrekang City Park is one of the most popular public open spaces and has become a main destination for the community to engage in physical activities, relax, and socialize, both on weekdays and weekends. The presence of various facilities such as pedestrian pathways, children's play areas, and seating has supported the park’s function as a recreational space for the public. However, it is important to further examine whether the park has been designed with an approach that considers the environmental, social, and cultural context of Enrekang. Contextual architecture is an approach that emphasizes the relationship between design and both the physical and non-physical conditions of a region, including aspects such as culture, climate, topography, and user behavior. Through this approach, the city park is expected not only to serve as a functional green space, but also to reflect local identity and create comfort aligned with the character of the local community. This research aims to identify, analyze, and evaluate the extent to which the principles of contextual architecture have been applied in the layout of Enrekang City Park. Using a descriptive-qualitative method and a case study approach, this study will observe the park’s design elements from both physical and socio-cultural aspects that support the creation of a contextual public space. The results of this research are expected to provide input for planners, architects, and local governments in creating city parks that are aligned with local character and community needs.

Abstract

Research Aims: This study examined the impact of work-life balance (WLB) initiatives on gig worker productivity, focusing on the mediating role of job satisfaction and the moderating effects of gig work characteristics and technological support. Design/Methodology/Approach: PLS-SEM was used in this study to analyse survey data collected from a sample of 400 gig workers engaged in various platforms, including Gojek, Grab, Shopee, and Freelancer.com. The survey instrument comprised structured questions designed to measure key constructs, namely WLB initiatives, technological support, job satisfaction, and employee productivity. Research Findings: WLB initiatives significantly positively impacted employee productivity, with job satisfaction functioning as a key mediating factor in this relationship. Moreover, the effectiveness of WLB initiatives was further amplified under conditions of low work intensity, stable gig roles, and robust technological support. Theoretical Contribution/Originality: By applying the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model to the gig economy, this study highlighted the critical role of tailored interventions, specifically the integration of technological tools and effective workload management, in enhancing both productivity and job satisfaction among gig workers. Managerial Implication in the South East Asian Context: The findings underscored the necessity for culturally responsive WLB initiatives and enhanced technological support to address persistent challenges, including job insecurity and inconsistent workloads, within Southeast Asia’s evolving labour market. Research Limitation & Implications: The cross-sectional design of this study limited the ability to draw causal inferences, and the findings may not be fully generalisable beyond the Indonesian context. Future research should employ longitudinal designs and examine diverse cultural settings to refine and validate strategies aimed at promoting sustainable productivity and well-being among gig workers.
