Abstract

Background: Understanding the health practice of Indonesian residents and its related factors during the COVID-19 pandemic is crucial, but such association necessitates clarity.  Objective: To examine the health practices of the Indonesian citizens and their correlations with knowledge and health belief model (perceived susceptibility, barriers, benefits, severity, and self-efficacy) during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Methods: A community-based online cross-sectional design was employed. The study was conducted from 10 July to 30 August 2020 among 552 citizens selected using convenience sampling. Sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge, health belief model, and health practices, including wearing a mask, social distancing, and washing hands, were measured using validated questionnaires. Adjusted odds ratios (AORs) and logistic regression were employed for data analysis. Results: The adjusted AORs (95% CIs) of a good level of health practices—wearing the mask, social distancing, and washing hands—were 3.24 (1.52~6.89), 2.54 (1.47~4.39), and 2.11 (1.19~3.75), respectively, in citizens with the high level of knowledge. Interestingly, respondents with positively perceived susceptibility exhibited significantly good practice in wearing the mask (4.91; 2.34~10.31), social distancing (1.95; 1.08~3.52), and washing hands (3.99; 2.26~7.05) compared to those with negatively perceived susceptibility. In addition, perceived barriers, benefits, severity, and self-efficacy also exhibited a significantly good all variables of health practice regarding COVID-19 pandemic after adjusting for confounding variables. Conclusion: Citizens with high levels of knowledge and positive levels of the health belief model had good practice of wearing masks, social distancing, and washing hands. The outcomes of this survey could encourage health professionals, including nurses, through management practices of nursing intervention based on the health belief model during the pandemic.

Abstract

The level of knowledge of adolescents regarding reproductive health in Indonesia is still relatively low. Survey results show that many teenagers do not understand the function of reproductive organs, the risk of sexually transmitted diseases, and the importance of family planning. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of life skills training on knowledge and attitudes about adolescent reproductive health. The type of research used in this research uses quantitative methods with a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest post test design. The population in this study were all teenagers in SMK "Y" class X. The sample of teenagers in SMK "Y" Surabaya class X was 40 respondents. The sampling technique uses cluster random sampling. Statistical analysis in this study was carried out using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. The results of the training intervention can influence the increase in teenagers' knowledge and attitudes about teenage reproductive health life skills at SMK "Y", so it can be concluded that the training provided is effective in increasing teenagers' knowledge and attitudes about teenage reproductive health life skills. It is hoped that the school will provide educational training about reproductive health to adolescents from an early age.

Abstract

Leptospirosis is a disease caused by infection with Leptospira bacteria and is commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions, such as Indonesia. This study aimed to describe the demographic data, symptoms, and risk factors of suspected leptospirosis cases in Kendari Barat and Baruga Subdistricts, Kendari City, Southeast Sulawesi Province. Data were collected from epidemiological investigation reports from Benu-benua, Lepo-lepo, and Kandai Community Health Centers. Based on the data from suspected leptospirosis cases in Kendari City, most cases were found in females (60.6%), within the productive age group (66.7%), living in flood-prone areas (51.5%), and with the presence of rats inside the home (69.7%). Living in flood-prone areas and the presence of rats in the home were prominent risk factors among suspected leptospirosis cases. It was recommended that people of working age in Kendari City use personal protective equipment when working in environments with a high risk of transmission. Additionally, personal and household hygiene should be maintained, especially during floods and in the presence of rats, as these conditions increased the risk of leptospirosis transmission.
