Abstract

Apakah ekspresi arsitektur monument perjuangan bisa lebih dari sekadar peringatan peristiwa lampau? Bagaimana memperkenalkan kembali skala manusia pada arsitektur monument di Indonesia? Tulisan ini mengenai ulasan proyek sebagai riset desain untuk menemukan jawaban dari pertanyaan-pertanyaan tersebut. Arsitektur monumen perjuangan di Indonesia memiliki makna dan ekspresi yang terbatas dan gagal dalam memenuhi fungsinya sebagai ruang publik bagi manusia. Melalui kompetisi desain monumen perjuangan Balikpapan yang diadakan Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia (IAI) dilakukan eksplorasi sebuah ide desain monumen tanpa ‘monumen’. Dilakukan studi literatur sebagai dasar teori memahami makna monumen dan monumental, serta studi preseden dari karya-karya arsitek yang menerapkan pendekatan desain berdasarkan dasar teori tersebut. Riset ini menggunakan dasar teori anti-monumental dan dialogical sebagai pendekatan dalam mendesain. Desain monumen ini merupakan upaya menambah nilai entitas tidak hanya sebagai peringatan peristiwa lampau, namun juga sebagai penyongsong cita-cita masa depan dan memperkenalkan kembali skala manusia pada arsitektur monumen.

Abstract

A monument has become a stereotype for a landmark design at a road intersection in most cities in Indonesia. However, that stereotype only possesses symbolic value, overlooking other values such as spatiality and sustainability. This study proposes an alternative approach to designing a landmark at a road intersection. Mandala, as local wisdom, becomes a basic principle that later develops into the general concept of landmark design. Through literature studies of landmarks and spatial experience of architecture, and also supported by design experiments through case studies, this study suggests the Mandala concept as one of the best solutions for the landmark at a road intersection design, which offers varied and explorative designs. By the Mandala design concept, a landmark design at a road intersection not only possesses symbolic value but also environmental and better spatial experience values.

Abstract

‘Desakota’ has been acknowledged as a unique landscape condition in South East Asia and Indonesia especially. In the middle of emerging economies and rapid urban development, ‘desakota’ as a peri-urban area suffers environmental degradation in the economy and socio-culture because of poor planning and control from state and local authority. Inequality, spatial segregation, and inadequate infrastructure or slums are issues that peri-urban’desakota’ has to encounter. Nevertheless, as a tool for producing and adapting the built environment and introducing a spatial order, urban design shows less concern for developing this distinct peri-urban area. This study conducted in Teluknaga, Tangerang, the neighboring Jakarta, examined the significance of informality which shapes a compact urban form in the 'desakota' area. Data collection of the study was done through field study by conducting interviews, observations, and direct mapping. We conclude that the informality potents should be considered for designing ‘desakota’ to maintain its compact form and create a more sustainable urban form and a better urban life.
