Abstract

This study examines the influence of Kiyai Haji Ahmad Dahlan (1868-1923) in the history of Islamic reform in Indonesia and its impact on modern movements and thought. This study focuses on Muhammadiyah, an Islamic organization founded by Ahmad Dahlan on November 18, 1912, in the context of religious reform and purification. The main objective of this study is to reveal the philosophy and struggle brought by Ahmad Dahlan, a pioneer of modern awareness and awakening in Indonesia. The method used is descriptive-historical with a qualitative approach, combining scientific and empirical reviews. The study results indicate that Ahmad Dahlan's thoughts have greatly influenced the aspirations of modern Islam through Muhammadiyah, which created a broad network of activists and preachers. His contribution to developing rational streams and awareness from the traditions of madhhab and puritanism is very significant. Recommendations include the need for further research on Ahmad Dahlan's influence in a global context and the adjustment of traditional values ​​in contemporary Islamic education to increase the relevance of education in the modern era.

Abstract

Artikel ini meneliti pemikiran sains Shaykh Muhammad Abduh (1849-1905) dan pengaruhnya di dunia Islam. Perspektif saintifiknya ini dhuraikan secara sistematik dengan menganalisis karya-karyanya yang yang prolifik dan ekstensif tentang sains, seperti Al-Islām wa’lNasrāniyyah Ma‘a al-‘Ilm wa’l-Madaniyyah (Islam dan Kristian dan pendirian keduanya terhadap ilmu dan peradaban), Tafsīr al-Manār, Tafsīr Juz ‘Amma (Komentar atas Juz ‘Amma), Risālat al-Tawhīd (Tretis tentang tawhid) di samping kitab-kitab serta literatur penting yang lain dari Abduh. Tema utama yang dibincangkan menfokuskan pada falsafah sains Abduh, sumbangan Abduh kepada kemodenan, dan pandangan saintifiknya dalam tafsir. Ia turut membincangkan pengaruhnya terhadap masyarakat Mesir moden dan impaknya yang penting dalam pencerahan dan pembaharuan Islam di zaman moden. Metode kajian bersifat kualitatif berasaskan kaedah tinjauan literatur dan biografi. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan penemuan yang signifikan, yang memperlihatkan bahawa sumbangan utama Abduh kepada sains adalah dalam mengislamkan karakter dan landasnya yang dinamik berdasarkan pandangan sarwa Islam yang moden. Ini secara substantif dipaparkan dalam usahanya untuk memperkenalkan tafsiran saintifik terhadap al-Qur’an, yang mengangkat keunggulan akal dan intelek (‘aql), membawakan kefahaman rasionalnya terhadap teks, dan menyumbang kepada kebangkitan pikiran saintifik, kebebasan idea (taharrur), dan pandangan sarwa religius yang dinamik.

Abstract

The article analyses the influence of Imam al-Ghazali’s (450-505/1058-1111) religious ideals in the Malay Basin particularly through his works Ihyā’ ‘Ulūm al-Dīn, Mi‘rāj al-Sālikīn, Bidāyah al-Hidāyah, Ma‘ārij al-Quds fī Madārij Ma‘rifat al-Nafs, al-Mustasfa and al-Madnun bihi ‘ala Ghayr Ahlih. The highly charged and popularity of his works come from various forms of its translated versions in the hand of Malay theologians working on its elucidation such as Sayr al-Sālikīn and Hidāyah al-Sālikīn by ‘Abd al-Samad al-Falimbani (1704-1789) and concise translation of Minhāj al-‘Ābidīn by Shaykh Daud al-Fatani. The paper situates his works in the wider context of Sunni-Islam held by the Malays and its burgeoning cultural and intellectual tradition, far-reaching intensity of activism and da‘wah and idealism widely disseminated in the regions. The study is based on qualitative method in the form of library and literature survey using inductive and deductive method. Data and materials were derived from selected primary and secondary sources and analysed by way of descriptive, analytical, empirical, hermeneutical and historical approaches. The finding reveals that the nuances of al-Ghazali’s corpus were well articulated in the Malay world developed through compelling theological and philosophical works that defend its significance values, norms, legality, ethics, metaphysics, logic and virtues and its classic synthesis of shariah and tasawuf and its spiritual illumination and articulation in the mozaic of contemporary Malay worldview and tradition.
