Abstract

This paper discusses the fundamental ideal and philosophy of education advocated by Ismail Raji al-Faruqi (1921-1986) in realizing the Islamization of knowledge (IOK) project. The concept and perspective of education projected by al-Faruqi was constructed on the worldview of tawhid that reflected the essence and intrinsic philosophy and paradigm of knowledge rooted on Islamic vision of reality and truth. It embodied the comprehensive and holistic vision of education that seeks to integrate the fundamental element of revealed and acquired knowledge. The project envisaged to undertake significant reform in the practice and method of education of the ummah that need to be recast and reproject based on the intrinsic value and paradigm of the Qur’an and its approach to knowledge. This paper will analyse this significant idea and principle and its importance in realizing the IOK vision and reforming the educational system in the Muslim world.

Abstract

Kertas ini menelaah buku Melayu dan Islam: Martabat Umat dan Daulat Rakyat karya Dr Siddiq Fadzil. Setelah diluncurkan pada 25 Jun 2012 di Hotel De Palma, Ampang, buku Melayu dan Islam: Martabat Umat dan Daulat Rakyat karya Dr Siddiq Fadzil terus diangkat dan ?siap ditanggapi? oleh khalayak pembaca dan intelek. Dr Siddiq lahir di kalangan pemikir dan kelompok pembaharu di tanah air; dan merupakan aktivis dan pemimpin Islam yang besar yang menonjol dalam kegiatan intelek dan budaya yang luas. Beliau merupakan penggerak penting gerakan PKPIM (Persatuan Kebangsaan Pelajar Islam Malaysia), ABIM (Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia) dan WADAH (Wadah Pencerdasan Umat Malaysia) dan telah bergelut dalam perjuangan bangsa sejak empat dekad yang lampau. Artikel ini cuba merumuskan sumbangannya dalam buku Melayu dan Islam ini sebagai suatu koreksi budaya dalam mengangkat diskusi tentang tradisi dan ciri budaya yang signifikan di kepulauan Melayu-Indonesia yang berakar dengan nilai rasionalisme dan humanisme Islam yang kental dan faham-faham pemikiran yang ideal yang telah mengangkat dan mempertahankan nilai kebudayaan dan peradabannya sejak masuknya Islam ke nusantara.

Abstract

Kertas ini berusaha meneliti fikrah pembaharuan Sayid Muhammad Rashid Rida dan perjuangannya dalam melanjutkan rencana pembaharuan Muhammad Abduh dan cita-cita reform yang diperjuangkannya dengan Sayid Jamal al-Din al-Afghani pada penghujung abad ke 19. Ini digerakkan dalam jaringan intelektual yang berpengaruh di Mesir pada awal kurun ke 20 lewat majalah al-Manar yang menjadi corong dalam menggulirkan pemikiran reform dan menyebarkan idea-idea islah yang dibawa al-Afghani dan Abduh dalam majalah al-‘Urwatul Wuthqa yang terbit di Paris. Pembaharuan yang cukup signifikan yang dibawa Rida adalah dalam penghasilan karya tafsir yang bercorak adabi ijtima‘i yang dimuatkan dalam majalah al-Manar yang membawa pemikiran rasional dalam tafsir dan menjadi katalis dalam membawa perubahan dan menyatukan kekuatan akal dan wahyu secara tuntas. Kertas ini menyimpulkan bahawa Rashid Rida merupakan antara sosok terpenting dalam modernisme Islam yang telah memberikan sumbangan yang penting dalam kebangkitan Islam dan pengembangan tradisi intelektualnya di abad moden.

Abstract

Muhammad Abduh had a remarkably profound and lasting impact in Indonesia. His reformist ideas had a strong repercussion in the political and social landscape of the region. They were readily adopted by major Islamic movements, notably Muhammadiyah, al-Irshad and Persatuan Islam (Persis). Abduh’s Tafsir al-Manar deeply influenced some momentous works of Qur’anic exegesis, such as Tafsir al-Azhar, Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Karim, Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Madjid (Tafsir al-Nur), Tafsir al-Misbah and Tafsir al-Furqan. His Majallat al-Manar, which was planned and collaborated with Rashid Rida since 1898, highly inspired reform-oriented scholarship evident in journals such as al-Munir, and al-Dhakhirah al-Islamiyah. This study aims to analyze the influence of Abduh’s modernism in Indonesia. It attempts to discover the implication of his principle and philosophical tradition in the religious reform and modern movement in Indonesia. The method of study is based on qualitative approaches, using content analysis method. It was conducted based on library method to investigate the related data from primary and secondary sources. The data was analyzed using descriptive-analytical approaches, by way of inference (istisqa’) and deductive (istinbat) method. The paper concluded that Abduh had profound and extensive influence in the Archipelago, especially his impact on Islamic reform and renewal (islah and tajdid) in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper analyze the influence of Muhammad ‘Abduh on his chief disciple, Muhammad Rashid Rida. Rida was the leading advocate of Abduh’s rational principle and modern ideas through his writing in Tafsir al-Manar (The Manar Commentary) and Tarikh al-Ustadh al-Imam Muhammad Abduh (Biography of Muhammad Abduh). Tafsir al-Manar is a Qur’anic exegesis based on rational approach outlined by Muhammad ‘Abduh and the Tarikh is a comprehensive biography of the life and works of Muhammad Abduh printed in three volumes that significantly documented Abduh’s lasting influence and legacy in modern Egypt. Rida continued to resolutely champion the ideas of reform through Majallat al-Manar (al-Manar Journal) that highly reverberated Abduh’s principles and remarkably claimed extensive influence in contemporary Islamic world.

Abstract

Muhammad Abduh mempunyai pengaruh dan dampak yang kukuh dan luar biasa di kepulauan Nusantara. Karya-karya dan ideanya sangat berpengaruh dan kekal bertahan di rantau ini dengan kesannya yang meluas dalam landskap politik dan sosialnya. Beliau telah memberikan impak yang mendalam terhadap pergerakan Islam moden seperti Persyarikatan Muhammadiyah, Jam‘iyah al-Irsyad, Persatuan Islam (Persis), Pensyarikatan Ulama, Hizbul Muslimin, dan Sarekat Islam. Tafsir al-Manar-nya telah memberi pengaruh yang jelas kepada karya-karya tafsir yang terhasil di Nusantara, seperti Tafsir al-Azhar, Tafsir al-Qur’anul-Karim, dan sebagainya. Majalah al-Manar yang diilhamkan oleh Muhammad Abduh dan Rashid Rida telah memberikan inspirasi dan pikiran dasar terhadap banyak berkala dan akhbar yang berorientasikan reform yang menyalin dan menerjemahkan tulisan-tulisannya seperti majalah al-Munir, al-Imam, al-Ikhwan, Saudara, dan lainnya. Justeru, makalah ini bertujuan meninjau pengaruh Abduh yang ekstensif dalam kebangkitan gerakan pembaharuan di Arkipelago Melayu. Kajian ini berbentuk studi kualititif dari jenis penelitian pustaka dengan metode analisis kandungan. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis secara deksriptif dan analitik. Penemuan kajian membuktikan bahawa Muhammad Abduh mempunyai pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap harakat pembaharuan (tajdid) dan tradisi rasional yang berkembang di kepulauan Melayu-Indonesia.[Muhammad Abduh had a remarkably profound and lasting impact in South East Asia. His works and ideas were highly influential in the region with strong repercussion in its political and social landscape. He had strongly impacted the movements of Muhammadiyah, al-Irsyad and Persatuan Islam (Persis). His Tafsir al-Manar had broke the ground with rational outlook that influence major works of tafsir such as Tafsir al-Azhar, Tafsir al-Quranul Karim, and others. The Majallah al-Manar planned and initiated by Muhammad Abduh had significantly inspired many reform oriented works and periodicals such as journal al-Imam, al-Munir, al-Ikhwan, Saudara, al-Dhakhirah al-Islamiyah and Seruan Azhar. Thus this paper attempts to survey Abduh’s extensive influence and its impact on Islamic reform (tajdid) in the Malay Archipelago. The method of study is based on qualitative approaches, using content analysis method. It was conducted based on library research to investigate the related data that was subsequently analyzed using descriptive-analytical approaches, The finding concluded that Muhammad Abduh had deep influence in religious reform and rational tradition that flourished in the Malay-Indonesian Archipelago.]

Abstract

The paper analyse the ideas of hadith (prophetic tradition) as espoused by Muhammad Asad (1990-1992) and its significance in contemporary hadith thought. It studies the essential ideas he developed in his discussion of hadith as reflected in his works such as Sahih al-Bukhari The Early Years of Islam; Islam at The Crossroads (chapter “Hadith and Sunnah” and “The Spirit of the Sunnah”); This Law of Ours and Other Essays, The Road to Mecca and The Message of the Qur’an. The influence of hadith was also deeply manifested in his “journalistic monologue” Arafat: A Monthly Critique of Muslim Thought, a periodical he founded in 1946 in Kashmir and other works that addresses significance principles and issues of hadith and essays that incorporate rising themes in contemporary ages, such as “Social and Cultural Realities of the Sunnah”. The research was structured based on descriptive, analytical, historical and comparative method. It attempts to analyse the crucial ideas of hadith principles brought forth by Asad and compared these with other critical views set forth of classical Muslim traditionists. The study concluded that Muhammad Asad had significantly contributed to the revival and development of hadith in the modern world with his profound translation and commentary of al-Bukhari’s Sahih – Sahih al-Bukhari The Early Years of Islam - that extensively survey the significant tradition of hadith and its intellectual and historical manifestation over centuries. He also responded to the traditional arguments by historians and orientalists who were sceptical of the historical authenticity of hadith narrative and tradition.ABSTRAKMakalah ini menyorot fikrah hadith Muhammad Asad (1990-1992) dan kontribusinya dalam pemahaman hadith kontemporer. Ia membincangkan kefahaman asas tentang hadith yang dirumuskan dalam karya-karyanya seperti Sahih al-Bukhari The Early Years of Islam; Islam at The Crossroads (bab “Hadith and Sunnah” dan “The Spirit of the Sunnah”); This Law of Ours and Other Essays; The Road to Mecca dan The Message of the Qur’an. Pengaruh hadith ini turut ditinjau daripada artikelnya dalam jurnal Arafat dan makalahnya yang lain terkait tema-tema hadith dan sunnah dan pemahaman serta cabarannya di abad moden, seperti tulisannya “Social and Cultural Realities of the Sunnah”. Reka bentuk kajian adalah bersifat deskriptif, analitis, historis dan komparatif. Kajian cuba mengembangkan ide dan fikrah hadith yang dirumuskan Asad dari perspektifnya yang moden dan membandingkannya dengan pemikiran-pemikiran sejarah yang krusial terkait prinsip hadith yang dibawakan oleh pemikir Islam yang lain. Dapatan kajian menyimpulkan bahawa Muhammad Asad telah memberikan sumbangan yang penting dalam pemikiran hadith di abad moden dengan hasil penulisannya yang prolifik dan substantif, termasuk terjemahan dan syarahannya yang ekstensif terhadap Sahih al-Bukhari yang memuatkan komentar-komentar yang baru dan analisis sejarahnya yang mendalam terhadap kitab ini. Ia merumuskan pertentangan-pertentangan hukum dan istinbat-istinbat fuqaha dan muhaddith dalam tradisi syarah hadith yang kritis. Ia turut merespon pertikaian-pertikaian asas yang dibangkitkan oleh golongan orientalis dan intelektual yang skeptis terhadap riwayat-riwayat sejarah dalam tradisi hadith.

Abstract

Today's internet technology has advanced extremely quickly and is still expanding. The virtual world is a place where everyone and any group of individuals are free to engage in their activities. In this all-IT era, typing skills are very important for students. Because almost all student activities are carried out by typing such as compiling papers, reports, theses and others. However, the results of observations made at the Arabic Language Education Study Program at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang show that the skills of typing Arabic texts for Arabic Language Education Study Program students are still minimal. The aim of the research is to design a website-based Arabic Typing application and test the feasibility of using the application. The research subjects were students of the Arabic Language Education Study Program. The development model used is the ADDIE model. Through research and development, researchers are tasked with designing applicationsArabic Typingwebsite-based and test the feasibility of using the application for Arabic Language Education Study Program students. Based on media expert validation obtained an average percentage of eligibility of 97.11% (Very Feasible), whereas based on material expert validation obtained an average percentage of eligibility of 85% (Very Feasible). The results of the feasibility test by students obtained an average percentage of eligibility of 83.9% (Very Feasible). On this basis the Arabic Typing application based on this website is very feasible to use as a medium to improve Arabic text Keyboarding skills specifically for students of Arabic Language Education Study Program Faculty of Islamic Stadies at University of Muhammadiyah Malang

Abstract

This paper investigates the significance of Qur’anic studies and its science in developing Islamic civilization. To acquire sufficient data and material for study, case study was conducted in Kelas Pengajian Al-Qur’an, Tajwid & Bahasa Arab organized by Centre for Language and Pre-University Academic Development (CELPAD), IIUM. It surveys the pedagogical method and technique assigned in class, and its effectiveness in instilling public consciousness of the underlying value of the Qur’an and its significance to empower individual and society. The method of study is based on observation, and interviews with trainers and participants to see their level of understanding on the significance of class in fostering religious consciousness and establishing rigorous ummah. Generally, the class has effectively promotes value and religious input and increase participants’ understanding of the science of the Qur’an. In this regards, continuous effort must be developed emphasizing on the aspect of reform on the curriculum framework and syllabus. This is set forth in this paper by envisaging reform, and reconstruction through integration of curriculum with contemporary science and thought to increase the standard of learning and teaching process. Summarily, with obvious consequence of the effectiveness of organizing Qur’anic class for the public, this initiative must be expanded more profoundly to produce Qur’anic generation that were instrumental in constructing progressive civilization for the ummah.

Abstract

This article reviews the role and leadership of Muhammad Abduh (1849-1905) in his career as editorial head of the newspaper al-Waqā'i' al-Misrīyyah (الوقائع المصرية) since 1880. His actions in the realm of journalism are important in the context of the rise of the Egyptian newspaper, especially al -Mu'ayyad and al-Waqā'i' al-Misrīyyah as official government newspapers to develop modernist ideals and influence public opinion in Egypt. It made an important impact which enabled it to play a role in developing the dignity of the language, increasing the influence of the press and journalism and raising public awareness of the intense political and cultural interactions in the development of the spirit of nationalism and social consciousness in Egypt. His political writings and plans cover the periods of Riyad Pasha's administration, Sharif's administration and times of upheaval. This article highlights the ideas he expressed regarding social and spiritual renewal, as well as related educational, religious and socio-cultural issues. The study method is based on documentation and bookkeeping methods. The study data was reviewed descriptively, analytically and comparatively. The conclusion of the study finds dynamic and productive developments during Abduh's leadership leading to the al-Waqa'i' al-Misriyyah newspaper which succeeded in raising society's problems and drawing awareness about the latest developments in the world of politics and newspapers as well as maintaining the ethical interests and values of journalism.
