Abstract

The English language ability test, in this case TOEFL, is an international standard language test to measure English language skills for speakers whose mother tongue is not English. In Indonesia, there are several conditions that require someone to take the TOEFL test, including continuing higher education both at home and abroad, meeting college graduation requirements, knowing the level of language skills applying for jobs, and getting a promotion. In general, there are three types of TOEFL, namely IBT (internet-based test), PBT (paper-based test), and ITP (Institutional Testing Program). In this regard, school age is considered the right time to introduce the TOEFL test to students, especially those whose solution is to provide TOEFL PREPARATION training. From the TOEFL training activities carried out from April 15 2024, the results showed that there was a significant increase in the students' TOEFL scores before and after the activity

Abstract

Since Bangladesh emerged as an independent country, violence has become a part of its political process and activism. This paper challenges a dominant narrative that has been discursively constructed and promoted by secularist communities, civil societies, political parties (including the ruling party), and groups in Bangladesh throughout the years. A dominant narrative about religious violence claims Islamists are primarily responsible for political violence in Bangladesh. However, based on a robust analysis of thirty years of data on violence and other of credible sources, I have found that the dominant narrative is not backed by factual and quantitative evidence or a popular mandate but is constructed primarily to support and legitimize political persecution in the politics of Bangladesh. This paper offers a counter-narrative and argues that in Bangladesh, violence has become a political tool for opposition groups to acquire power and for incumbent regimes to retain power. Moreover, it states that religious parties are less violent than secular groups in Bangladesh.

Abstract

Open waste burning remains a significant environmental issue in Badak Anom Village, contributing to air pollution that adversely affects community health. This community service program aims to introduce the rocket stove as an alternative technology for more efficient and low-emission waste management. The implementation method includes literature review, coordination and permit acquisition from local authorities, site surveys, preparation of technical drawings, construction of the rocket stove, and community training on its use. The results show that the rocket stove effectively reduces smoke emissions compared with open burning, improves combustion efficiency, and decreases the volume of organic waste by more than 70 percent. The community also demonstrated increased understanding of waste segregation and safe combustion practices. Overall, the rocket stove has proven to be an effective appropriate technology that supports sustainable waste management in rural areas.

Abstract

This study investigates the integration of socio-constructivism and digital literacy principles in English speaking instruction within higher education contexts in North Sumatera, Indonesia. Responding to persistent challenges in students’ oral proficiency, confidence, and access to authentic communication, the research aimed to design, implement, and evaluate digital pedagogy practices that enhance speaking competence through collaborative, technology-mediated learning. Employing a convergent mixed-methods design, the study involved 120 English education students and 12 lecturers from three universities. Data were gathered through questionnaires, classroom observations, speaking performance assessments, and interviews, and analyzed using both statistical and thematic procedures. Findings reveal that digital storytelling, podcast-based tasks, and collaborative multimedia projects significantly improved learners’ fluency, motivation, and self-efficacy, aligning with socio-constructivist principles of interaction, scaffolding, and learner autonomy. Lecturers demonstrated increasing digital pedagogical competence but reported ongoing challenges related to infrastructure and training. The study concludes that embedding socio-constructivist approaches within digitally rich environments fosters communicative, multimodal, and culturally relevant speaking instruction. The proposed framework offers a sustainable model for integrating technology into English language teaching across comparable educational contexts.
