Abstract

Matoa (Pometia pinnata J.R.Forst & G. Forst) leaves contain polyphenols and flavonoids which areprospective for the development of the new antidiabetic agent. This research aimed to explore thepotency of matoa leaves in reducing blood glucose level and increasing plasma insulin concentrationin alloxan-induced rats. The experimental study was done in 6 treatment groups: the aquadest (normal),alloxan (Alx) 150 mg/kgBW (negative control), glibenclamide (Gli) 5 mg/kgBW (positive control),and matoa leaves extract (MLE) at the doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kgBW. The treatment wasadministered for 14 days orally post-induction of alloxan and fasting blood glucose (FBG) reached>200 mg/dL. Blood glucose levels were established by the GOD-PAP (Diasys) method while plasmainsulin was measured using Rat insulin ELISA kit. Hematoxyline-eosin (HE) staining on tissues wasperformed to observe the population of pancreatic beta cells. The results showed that the MLE extractat a dose of 200 mg/kgBW could decrease the FBG level to 135.25±21.14 mg/dL and increase theplasma insulin level up to 0.14%. Pancreas histopathology indicated that the number of damaged cellswere lower than negative control. In conclusion, our results affirm the promising potential of MLE asa candidate of the novel antidiabetic agent.

Abstract

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease with an increasing prevalence due to unhealthy lifestyles and limited public knowledge, including among PKK women in Batan Village, most of whom do not yet understand how to choose healthy foods to prevent and manage DM. This community service program aimed to improve the understanding of PKK members in Batan Village, Banyudono, Boyolali, regarding DM management through proper nutrition and dietary education. The activities were carried out in three stages: fasting blood glucose screening, nutrition counseling, and interactive discussions. Among the 21 participants, 42.86% showed fasting blood glucose levels exceeding 110 mg/dL. The educational materials emphasized the selection of foods with a low glycemic index and the avoidance of foods high in added sugars. The discussion sessions revealed that most participants initially lacked understanding of DM prevention; however, after the program, around 85% of participants were able to mention foods recommended for DM patients and understood the concept of portion control. The education was also contextualized by promoting local food ingredients such as sweet potatoes and peanuts. This program demonstrated that a community-based educational approach can be an effective non-pharmacological strategy to reduce the risk of DM and improve community quality of life, as evidenced by the increase in participants’ understanding, with 85% able to mention recommended foods for DM patients and understand portion control concepts after the education. Simple direct educational interventions proved successful in building significant preventive health awareness.

Abstract

Burns are lesions on body tissues that occur due to exposure to heat sources such as fire, chemicals, or electric currents. Bilimbi (Averroa bilimbi L.) is thought to have therapeutic properties to treat burns in male Wistar rats. Burn healing is divided into 3 phases of inflammation, proliferation, and maturation. This study was to prove the ability of the ethanol extract gel preparation of bilimbi in the process of healing burns. Bilimbi extract gel was formulated in three concentration variations, namely 2.5%, 5%, and 10%. Control testing of the preparation included organoleptic, homogeneity, spreadability, viscosity, and adhesion. The bilimbi extract gel preparation with a series of concentrations of 2.5%, 5%, and 10% gave an effect in healing second-degree burns. The percentage data of burn diameter were analyzed using ANOVA. The results of statistical analysis showed that the preparation of ethanol extract gel from star fruit with a concentration of 10% gave a healing effect with a healing percentage of 86% which was almost the same as the positive control. This healing effect is thought to come from the content of star fruit such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins.
