Abstract

The proliferation of social media platforms particularly Instagram and TikTok among Indonesian university students has created both extraordinary pedagogical opportunities and complex psychological risks for Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam, PAI). Objectives: This study examined (i) the influence of social media-based PAI learning on character formation; (ii) its influence on student mental health; (iii) differential effectiveness of Instagram versus TikTok; and (iv) a recommended integration model. A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design was employed with 320 valid respondents drawn from four State Islamic Universities (UIN) in Indonesia via stratified random sampling. Quantitative data were analysed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM-AMOS 24.0) and MANOVA; qualitative data from 24 purposively selected informants were processed through Braun & Clarke thematic analysis and NVivo 12. Social media-based PAI learning significantly predicted character formation (β = 0.672, p < .001) and mental health (β = 0.543, p < .001). A curvilinear effect on mental health emerged: moderate use (2–4 hours/day) was beneficial, whereas heavy use (> 5 hours/day) was detrimental (β = −0.421, p < .001). Instagram showed greater efficacy for religious and social character dimensions; TikTok excelled for moral and intellectual character. The combined-platform group achieved the highest scores on both outcomes. Character formation partially mediated the PSML–mental health relationship (indirect effect = 0.287, 95% CI [0.193, 0.389]). Social media can serve as a powerful pedagogical medium for PAI when structured through the proposed PEACE (Pedagogical, Ethical, Authentic, Creative, Evaluative) model. Institutional policies must integrate Islamic digital literacy into PAI curricula and support faculty professional development.

Abstract

This study examines the integration of Wahdatul 'Ulum values the unity of knowledge paradigm developed at UIN Sumatera Utara into the socio-religious life of Indonesian Muslims. Employing a qualitative approach grounded in social-religious hermeneutics, the research draws on participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentary analysis to reveal how integrative epistemological values are interpreted, negotiated, and embodied across diverse domains of Muslim practice. The study identifies seven principal manifestations of Wahdatul 'Ulum in Indonesian Muslim life: integrative Islamic higher education, tawhid-based Arabic language learning, Islamic communication and broadcasting, value-based leadership, Islamic healthy lifestyle promotion, halal supply chain management, and the religious moderation discourse. Findings demonstrate that the knowledge dichotomy inherited from the Dutch colonial era produced a dual epistemological crisis that Wahdatul 'Ulum systematically addresses through tawhidic ontology, positioning revelation and reason as complementary rather than hierarchical. The paradigm exhibits a deep epistemological convergence with the national wasatiyyah agenda, functioning as an epistemological vaccine against radicalism by cultivating holistic, multi-perspective critical thinking among students and communities. Islamic organizations particularly Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah alongside pesantren and digital da'wah platforms serve as key agents amplifying the paradigm's reach beyond formal educational settings. Implementation challenges include the absence of operationally robust integration methodology, institutional resistance, resource constraints, and inadequate evaluation instruments. The study concludes that Wahdatul 'Ulum constitutes a strategic intellectual asset for Indonesia's religious moderation agenda and recommends comprehensive policy integration across education, the halal industry, and interfaith governance as a basis for future research and reform.

Abstract

Communication between spouses serves as the primary medium determining the quality of marital relationships, functioning not merely as information exchange but as the continuous construction and reconstruction of shared meaning, trust, and emotional safety. Despite extensive scholarship on marital communication from interpersonal communication and marital psychology perspectives, studies that systematically examine spousal communication ethics through the lens of akhlaq tasawuf as a coherent normative system remain scarce. This study aims to construct a comprehensive framework of spousal communication ethics based on five core akhlaq tasawuf principles—shidq (authentic truthfulness), amanah (sacred trustworthiness), hilm (composed gentleness), tawadu' (authentic humility), and husnuzh-zhann (charitable interpretation)—and to analyze their implications for marital harmony. Employing a qualitative normative-integrative library research methodology that dialogizes classical Sufi texts with contemporary interpersonal communication theory and marital psychology, this study finds that the five principles form a coherent, mutually reinforcing value system that collectively produces 'communicative sakinah'—a state of relational tranquility generated through honesty, trust, and humility in every spousal interaction. Crucially, these principles demonstrate strong resonance with Gottman's marital research, Rogers' client-centered communication theory, and Nonviolent Communication (NVC), confirming that akhlaq tasawuf wisdom is empirically validated beyond normative-religious boundaries. The study proposes the Communicative Sakinah Model as a practical framework for marriage preparation, couple counseling, and family harmony programs
