Abstract

Zakat is an obligation in Islam which commands the followers to pay a few money to the poor, the needy and other particular recipients determined by Qur’an. Since Zakat is obligatory only for the rich, the system should be able to reduce inequality and poverty. Aceh has implemented a zakat management program since 2006. Nevertheless, the impact of this program has not appeared. This study aims to analyze the impact of potential muzakki in Aceh to poverty reduction and identify the main factors contributing to the rise of muzakki. By using Socio-economic survey data from BPS-Statistics of Aceh Province, the potential of muzakki numbers can be estimated. Then, the impact on the poverty will be analyzed. The method used to identify the variables affecting the muzakki numbers is Multiple Linear Regression with Stepwise Selection method. The result shows that the potential muzakki in Aceh reaches 3 million people and able to reduce the poverty rate by approximately 3.25 percent. Subsequently, the economic size and the average number of dependents are the significant variables whose impact to increase the number of muzakki. For maximizing these opportunities, the data and program synchronization between the governments with zakat institutions are suggested.

Abstract

The first goal of Sustainable Development Goals, eliminating poverty in all forms, is closer to multidimensional poverty rather than official poverty statistics, which are measured using the basic need approach. Examining the trend of economic growth in Aceh during the past few years reveals the limitations of this strategy. Economic improvement has little effect on the poverty rate because it is only measured in one dimension. This research measures the poverty rate from various aspects by examining the forming factors first. The formed index will then be analyzed for its properness by involving other related variables and compared to the basic-need-based poverty measurement. Furthermore, every impact of each dimension on economic growth will also be assessed. Using the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), multidimensional poverty is measured to give another perspective on the poverty rate. Multiple linear regression is employed to identify the relationship between the poverty dimension and the economy. The result shows that the new poverty rate measurement gives more proper poverty distribution across the region in Aceh Province. Concerning the human development index, multidimensional poverty is more relevant than basic need poverty. Asset ownership and education are the dimensions that significantly affect the economy. Our study concludes that multidimensional poverty should complement the monetary poverty produced by national statistical agencies and provide a new direction of poverty alleviation policy, such as increasing physical investment in households or creating vocational programs to improve the quality of the population.

Abstract

The weakening purchasing power of the middle class in Jakarta due to income stagnation and rising prices has encouraged the search for additional sources of income. The gig economy, which offers flexibility and higher income opportunities, is a potential alternative. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of middle-class workers and gig workers and measure the potential of the gig economy in increasing income. Analysis of the 2023 National Labor Force Survey (Sakernas) shows that 82.42% of Jakarta workers are middle class, the majority of whom have a high school education with an average income of 4.8 million rupiah per month. Meanwhile, gig workers with shorter working hours (44 hours/week) have an average income of 7 million rupiah. The results of the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) show the difference in income between gig and non-gig workers is 293,432 rupiah, increasing to 1,559,339 rupiah without the transportation sector. Logistic regression confirms that education, experience, and working hours have a significant effect on the opportunity to work in the gig economy. This finding emphasizes the importance of gig economy to potentially be the additional source of income for the middle-class workers, especially through skilled gig jobs. Therefore, the government needs to provide experience-based training (experiential learning) and promote the gig economy as a strategy to improve the welfare of middle-class in Jakarta.
