Abstract

Respiratory disorders can attack anyone indiscriminately. It is often found that types of respiratory diseases such as asthma and ARI. The causes are varied, such as dirty air, bacteria, and viruses. The world death rate of 20% is caused by asthma which is estimated for the next 10 years if it is not treated properly. Bronchial asthma is a type of non-communicable but chronic disease of varying severity in the respiratory tract. Pharmacological therapy such as nebulization and non-pharmacological therapy such as the semi-Fowler position are appropriate treatments to be given to patients with bronchial asthma so that they can regulate the patient's respiratory frequency. Giving a nebulizer can overcome shortness of breath, relax bronchial spasms, liquefy phlegm, and clear the airways. Meanwhile, the semi-Fowler position can provide comfort in breathing so that the lungs become wider. This training activity was attended by PkM participants, namely 20 nursing staff. The series of PkM activities include the delivery of material, discussions, therapy demonstrations, and simulations of treating bronchial asthma patients using nebulization and the semi-Fowler position. The media used are a nebulizer, teaching aids, and SOP. The results of the PkM implementation show that the PkM participants have understood the benefits of nebulization in the semi-Fowler's position. Apart from that, PkM participants were also able to carry out the two treatments by the SOP which was implemented through simulation.

Abstract

Asthma is a respiratory disorder characterized by inflammation, airway narrowing, and excessive mucus production, which leads to shortness of breath. A commonly applied therapy during acute asthma attacks is the use of a nebulizer, which delivers medication in the form of vapor inhaled directly into the airways. The effectiveness of nebulizer therapy is influenced by the physiological condition of the patient’s airway prior to the treatment. Warm water consumption has been shown to support respiratory function by maintaining mucosal hydration and softening mucus secretions. This community service program aimed to educate the public on the potential benefits of warm water consumption in enhancing the effectiveness of nebulizer therapy in relieving airway obstruction among asthma patients. The program was implemented with 25 participants, all of whom were asthma patients at Grandmed Hospital in Lubuk Pakam. The educational activity included delivering the intervention material, followed by interactive sessions such as Q & A and group discussions. Knowledge improvement was assessed by comparing post-test scores with pre-test scores. The results demonstrated a notable increase in participants’ knowledge, with an average score improvement of 34.1 points or 64.6%. Additionally, approximately 98% of participants reported that the educational session was beneficial and easy to understand. Participants showed improved comprehension of nebulizer mechanisms and recognized the importance of warm water intake prior to therapy. The educational intervention successfully enhanced participants understanding and encouraged the application of warm water consumption before nebulizer therapy, potentially leading to more effective treatment outcomes.

Abstract

Hypertension is a major public health problem with a prevalence that continues to increase both globally and nationally. This condition is often referred to as a “silent killer” because it usually presents without symptoms yet may lead to severe complications such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. Data from the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) revealed that the prevalence of hypertension in Indonesia reached 34.1% among individuals aged ≥18 years, showing an increase compared to 2013. One contributing risk factor is excessive sodium intake that exceeds daily recommendations, combined with poor nutritional knowledge influencing individual dietary behaviors. This study employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach to analyze the association between sodium intake and nutritional knowledge with the incidence of hypertension among inpatients at Harapan Insan Sendawar General Hospital. The study population included all elderly patients aged over 60 years (n = 36), selected through total sampling. Primary data were collected via interviews using a semi-FFQ questionnaire and blood pressure measurements, while secondary data were obtained from hospital records. Findings showed that most respondents were over 60 years old (61.1%), had high sodium intake (80.5%), and low nutritional knowledge (72.2%). The prevalence of hypertension among respondents was remarkably high at 94.4%. Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant association between sodium intake and hypertension (p = 0.010), as well as between nutritional knowledge and hypertension (p = 0.032). In conclusion, high sodium consumption and low nutritional knowledge significantly contribute to the incidence of hypertension among elderly patients. These findings highlight the importance of nutrition education and sodium intake control as preventive strategies for hypertension.
