Abstract

The Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) is highly appreciated for its ability to stop further nuclear proliferation in the world. Since its existence, this treaty has been said to be successful in preventing potential states from possessing weapons of mass destruction. At least, there are more than 40 states who have the capability to develop their own nuclear programmes, although such programmes are restrained from coming to fruition. However, this successful story has not taken place in the area of nuclear disarmament. None of its nuclear weapon-owning members seem to proceed with realising a full disarmament aim. This raises the question of why the NPT is unable to achieve success in the field of nuclear disarmament as it has in the field of nuclear non-proliferation. The NPT does not only contain the idea of nuclear non-proliferation, but also the idea of nuclear disarmament. In understanding this question, using a political psychology approach, this study finds that nuclear-weapon states face the so-called moral dilemma between the desire to achieve national interests and the desire to fulfil social demands required by the international norm. By taking advantage of the shortcomings in the NPT narrative as well as relevant world situations, these states attempt to be exempted from dismantling nuclear weapons under their possession.

Abstract

The rate of domestic violence in Indonesia, especially in Aceh, is alarming. The culture and values of a society that still adheres to patriarchy are suspected to be an underlying factor in the occurrence of violence. The Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection established the Community Participation Program for the Welfare of Women and Children (PUSPA) Keumalahayati, as a forum for inter-institutional cooperation in handling and overcoming domestic violence in Aceh. This research analyzes the tactics, achievements, and obstacles faced by PUSPA Aceh Keumalahayati. The method used is a qualitative method. The results showed that PUSPA Aceh Keumalahayati is essential in mobilizing the community through victim assistance, economic empowerment, and cross-sector cooperation. In addition, there are still obstacles faced in dealing with domestic violence, including the vulnerability of family structures, legal vagueness, and the normalization of violence. This study offers a comprehensive insight into domestic violence prevention and response at the local level, which can help create more efficient policies and focused intervention programs.

Abstract

This research analyzes the strategic agency of Mpu Uteun, a women-led conservation group in Aceh, Indonesia, that emerged in response to severe environmental degradation within a patriarchal social context. Grounded in the theoretical framework of women's agency and empowerment, this research examines the negotiation mechanisms that these female forest guardians employ across multiple spheres—domestic, communal, economic, and state—to legitimize their roles in environmental governance as they navigate socio-cultural barriers. Conducted within a qualitative design, this research employed secondary data examined through thematic narrative analysis. The findings revealed that the agency of Mpu Uteun is rooted in a collective experience of ecological disaster, which motivates proactive conservation measures such as forest patrols, reforestation, and disaster mitigation. The group's success hinges on sophisticated negotiation strategies: they renegotiated domestic roles to accommodate public activism, navigate communal resistance through inclusive tactics and non-confrontational approaches toward illegal loggers, and, crucially, secure formal legitimacy from the state by obtaining a customary forest management permit. This research concludes that Mpu Uteun exemplifies an effective model of community-based conservation while fundamentally transforming the gendered landscape of natural resource governance. Thus, this research advances understanding of women’s environmental agency, demonstrating how strategic negotiation dismantles patriarchal barriers and informs inclusive conservation policy.

Abstract

This study explores the intersection of conspicuous consumption and the Hijrah movement within Indonesia's socio-cultural and economic transformations. The rise of the middle class, coupled with the proliferation of social media, has amplified conspicuous consumption, where symbols of wealth and social status are prominently displayed. In this context, religiosity emerges as a unique form of status signaling, referred to in this study as "conspicuous consumption of piousness." Simultaneously, the contemporary Hijrah movement has gained momentum, marked by its emphasis on personal transformation and lifestyle adjustments rather than political activism. Utilizing qualitative content analysis, this research reveals a reciprocal relationship between conspicuous consumption and the Hijrah movement. It highlights how middle-class anxieties and aspirations provide fertile ground for the Hijrah movement’s growth, while the movement itself fosters a platform for displaying religiosity as a marker of both piety and modernity. These findings contribute to theoretical debates on conspicuous consumption by extending its scope to include immaterial aspects and religious identities in a non-Western context, offering critical insights into the evolving dynamics of consumerism and religiosity.
