AN ANALYSIS OF THE COHESION AND COHERENCE OF STUDENTS` ENGLISH WRITINGS AT THE SECOND GRADE OF SMAN 1 LABUAPI WEST LOMBOK ., AYUB; K, SEKEN,; W, SUARNAJAYA,

Abstract

Abstract   This study aimed at analyzing students` writings in terms of: (1) the types of cohesive devices used; (2) the types of topical progressions; and (3) the problems of coherence. The subjects investigated were 30 second grade students of SMAN 1 Labuapi. There were two kinds of data collected: written and verbal data. In collecting the data, the students were given a writing task and the students and the English teacher were interviewed. The data were analyzed qualitatively based on Halliday and Hasans` theory of cohesion (1976) and Topical Progression Analysis of Lautamatti (1978) in Hoenisch (2009) and Almaden (2006). The results of study were (1) the students used the five types of cohesive devices to serve the coherence of their writings of which reference 40.84% with personal reference as the dominant use. Lexical cohesion was used 37.99% dominated with repetition. Then, it was followed by conjunction  19.60 %, ellipsis  1.35%, and substitution 0.29%; (2) the topical progression used was parallel progression with the percentage 56.84%, sequential progression 24.19%, and extended parallel progression 18.25%; (3) some problems in coherence of students` writings were reference, conjunction, lexical cohesion, tenses, auxiliary `to be`, passive voice, infinitive, gerund, subject-verb agreement, noun, preposition, and text structure. The result of the study indicates that cohesion and coherence have to be the emphasis in teaching writing and the English teachers have to be competent in evaluating the coherence of students` writings by applying TSA.   Keywords: cohesive devices, topical progression, cohesion, coherence.

Abstract

The condition of coral reefs is influenced by natural and anthropogenic factors. Anthropogenic activities such as coal mining will eventually have an impact on the surrounding ecosystems including coral reefs. This study aims to determine the condition of coral reefs in the waters around the operating areas of coal mining companies. This study is a preliminary study as a database that provides data on the health of coral reefs in the vicinity of the operation of mining companies in East Kutai Regency. Data was collected at Bengalon Reef, Kellie’s Reef and South Marker in March 2019 using Reef Check method, focusing on three indicators namely substrate, fish, and invertebrate. The line transect used in this method is 100 m long and divided into 4 segments. Physical and chemical parameters of the waters measured are current speed, brightness, pH, salinity, and water temperature. The condition of coral reefs in the study location is in medium category. The quality of the waters is in tolerance range of life support and coral growth. Indicator fish found were Chaetodontidae, Lutjanidae, Scaridae and Serranidae. Indicator invertebrates found were Holothuria edulis, Panulirus sp. and Tridacna spp. The dominant coral reef damage was found in boat anchors and fishing nets rubbish.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The objective of this study is to determine the service provision of Civil Administration State Body Lubuklinggau (Identity Card Drive-thru service quality). The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative study through primary and secondary data. Data collection technique conducted through an interview, observation, and documentation. Data analysis technique was done through several steps including data collection, data reduction, data served, verification, and drawing conclusion. The result of the research showed that identity card drive-thru service quality has not been optimal based on several indicators: reliability (brief operation standard), punctuality of identity card drive-thru service, and responsiveness in service provision toward the community. Keywords: Standard; Identity Card drive-thru service ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui proses kualitas pelayanan Dinas Kependudukan dan Pencatatan Sipil dalam perekaman e-KTP Kota Lubuklingga. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, dengan sumber data yang digunakan data primer dan data sekunder. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan metode observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi,. Teknik analisis data dengan menggunakan empat langkah yaitu pengumpulan data, reduksi data, penyajian data dan verifikasi atau penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa belum terwujudnya kualitas pelayanan yang diharapkan oleh masyarakat, di mana realibility dalam melaksanakan perekaman e-KTP terutama pada mobil keliling telah menggunakan standar pelayanan yang jelas dilihat dari sistem, dan mekanisme serta prosedur pelayanan sesuai dengan stadandar oprasional prosedur (SOP). Ketepatan waktu untuk pelayanan yang diberikan Disdukcapil Kota Lubuklinggau belum berjalan sesuai dengan standar pelayanan yang ada. Sedangkan, untuk aspek Responsiviness, pemberian pelayanan kepada masyarakat tidak dilakukan dengan maksimal sehingga mengakibatkan beberapa masyarakat kecewa dengan pelayanan yang diberikan; dan Responsibility, telah dilakukan proses pemberian layanan yang sesuai dengan standar yang ditetapkan dan aturan yang berlaku. Kata Kunci: Kualitas; Mobil Perekaman e-KTP
