Abstract

Inaugural visit of President Soekarno to Palangka Raya on July 17, 1957, marked by the establishment of Tugu Soekarno, carries two meanings. The first meanings, from the perspective of the Indonesian government in Jakarta, is that this visit symbolizes ther formalization of Central Kalimantan Province as one of the provinces in the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia. The second meaning, from Dayak community’s perspective, is that this visit is seen as a recognition of Dayak identity. These two meanings have been continuously debated over time since President Soekarno first visit, and Tugu Soekarno has become a symbol of this two-way communication. Using observation and document analysis methods, this writing examines the symbolic communication of Tugu Soekarno in Palangka Raya, which continues to symbolize the tug of war between Indonesia and the Dayak community

Abstract

This writing discusses legal products that regulate the Chinese ethnic group in Indonesia. Through historical research, an investigation is conducted into the legal regulations issued by authorities since the VOC period, the Dutch colonial government, and the era of Independent Indonesia. It is understood that the position of the Chinese community in Indonesia has never been clear. By examining the legal regulations issued by these three authorities, it is found that the legal products applied to the Chinese community were built based on economic and political interests. Due to these economic and political interests, the authorities ultimately created legal products that restricted the Chinese community from interacting with other groups in Indonesia and consistently placed them in an unclear position, labeled as foreigners. These legal products influenced social life, putting this community in an ambiguous position.

Abstract

The misuse of customary traditions often leads to social conflict. This study examines a specific social conflict arising from the misapplication of sacred Hindu Kaharingan symbols by a Christian couple during their wedding ceremony in Tumbang Batian Village, Murung Raya Regency, Central Kalimantan. This region, particularly Kalimantan, is known for its religious diversity and rich cultural heritage. The findings indicate that the couple's actions caused significant unrest and protest among the Hindu Kaharingan community, who perceived it as a violation of ritual sanctity. This research underscores the importance of religious moderation as a conflict resolution approach. This case highlights existing societal conflicts, and thus, this study aims to address the incident by identifying its triggering factors and exploring resolution methods through the lens of religious moderation. A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing literature reviews and interviews with customary elders and family members. Triangulation techniques were also applied to enhance data validity by comparing findings from various sources and ensuring information consistency. The research results show that the symbols used in Christian traditional wedding rituals are a form of respect from the bride and groom to their ancestors.
