Abstract

This paper aims to examine the concept of religious tolerance from Yusuf al-‎Qardhawi's perspective. The descriptive-analytical method is used to describe and analyze the thoughts of Yusuf al-Qardhawi and his relationship with the thoughts of other Muslim scholars. From this research it was found; first, religious tolerance according to Yusuf al-Qardhawi is to give non-Muslims the freedom to choose their religion and not to force them in any form. Second, "the starting point of religious tolerance is freedom of religion, unity of the people, justice and muâmalah with non-Muslims. Third, freedom of religion is based on the view that differences are the will of God and that humans cannot force themselves to make all human beings believe. Fourth, there are some things that are allowed for Muslims to be tolerant towards non-Muslims but there are also things that are not allowed at all, such as recognizing the truth of the teachings of other religions and participating in the worship of other religions. Although al-Qardhawi is a great scholar, his thoughts are still criticized, so the study of his thoughts is interesting to discuss.

Abstract

This research explores the views of Taqi Misbah Yazdi in criticizing the theory of human freedom according to Jean Paul Sarte. The discourse of human freedom has indeed been widely discussed, especially in modern times, especially in philosophy. Even in the West, this freedom is central to the discussion. The emergence of existentialism proves that the question of freedom has become a polemic among existentialist philosophers such as Soren Kierkegaard, Martin Haidegger, Karl Jasper and others. Researchers will focus on discussing Sartre's existentialism about human freedom. The method for this research is qualitative because this research is descriptive in nature and tends to use analysis. Process and meaning (subject perspective) are emphasized in qualitative research. The theoretical base is used as a guide so that the research focus is in line with the facts in the field. In this research, in terms of the existence of values, all the freedom that Sartre does certainly has weaknesses, namely it leads to anxiety, whereas in essence Sartre's freedom begins with human awareness of "being" and then acts in a conscious "nothingness". In Yazdi's study, awareness in noting this will make man detached from divine will in value and spiritually, meaning that the understanding of an absolute being that is conscious with a temporary form like man cannot be understood and studied, because the feeling of not noting it blackens and empties oneself into something that in the end, man will never find his own essence. Keywords: Responsibility, Circle of Freedom, Fear, Facticity.

Abstract

Entering the modern era marked by advancements in science and technology, especially after the opening of the 19th century, Islam faced contact with the Western world, which subsequently brought new ideas into the Islamic world. This created new issues in the Islamic world, which prompted Islamic intellectuals to respond to these developments. At the same time, the Islamic world was facing a stage of stagnation and static, where the Muslim community was bound by all the results of the classic scholars' ijtihad. Iqbal's presence among the Muslim community on the Indian subcontinent aims to bring the Muslim community out of stagnation towards a more dynamic and progressive Islam. The author used a qualitative descriptive research method. The research type is a library research - a literature-based research with data taken from written materials, such as books or others that are related to the discussion topic. The results of the research found that Sir Muhammad Iqbal was one of the Muslim reform figures in India who encouraged dynamism in Islam. He saw that the main factor that caused the Muslim community to become stagnant, static, and rigid was the closed door of ijtihad. He believed that the values of the Qur'an essentially awaken humans to a higher awareness of their relationship with God and the universe. The Qur'an does not cover this detail, but humans are demanded to be creative and innovative in responding to it and create changes. In the terminology of fiqh, this is called ijtihad and, in Iqbal's view, is called the principle of movement in the structure of Islam.

Abstract

Traditional Islamic boarding schools in Banten play a central role in maintaining and developing Islamic traditions that adapt to local culture. Kiai as the leader of the Islamic boarding school not only maintains the purity of Islamic teachings but also acts as a mediator between religious values and community traditions. This study examines the response of traditional Islamic boarding school kiai in Banten to two local traditions, namely fidyah and sholawat money, using a qualitative descriptive approach and case study. This study found that the fidyah tradition in Banten has unique characteristics, such as the use of gold as a substitute for rice and the permissibility of borrowing to pay for it. Kiai provide legitimacy based on classical books such as I'anatu-t-thalibin and Nihayatu-z-zain, and also adapt their practices to social realities. Meanwhile, the tradition of sholawat money given to the congregation of the funeral prayer is seen as a form of charity and social respect. Kiai refer to the hadith about the virtue of congregational prayer and the recommendation to give charity to legitimize this practice. These two traditions demonstrate the dynamics of Islam as a living discursive tradition that continues to adapt without losing its authenticity. Kiai act as cultural brokers who connect religious texts with community practices, ensuring that traditions remain relevant and meaningful. This study contributes to understanding the role of pesantren and kiai in maintaining harmony between religion and local culture in Banten
