Abstract

Loss is a universal experience, yet its interpretation varies across cultures. This study aims to provide a comparative analysis of the meaning of loss in Elizabeth Bishop’s poem “One Art” (1976) and Kurniawan Junaedhie’s poem “Tak Ada Yang Hilang” (2009) using Jacques Derrida’s perspective of deconstruction. This study explores how these poems reflect and deconstruct the meaning of loss through logocentrism, binary opposition, and difference. The findings indicate that while Bishop presents loss as an art to be mastered, reflecting Western pragmatism and individualism, Junaedhie portrays loss as a transformation rather than an absence, rooted in Eastern perspectives on continuity and presence. This research contributes to the field of comparative literature and poetry analysis by highlighting the cultural and philosophical dimensions of loss.

Abstract

Applied translation studies provide a wider room for collaborations between translation study and other disciplines. The collaboration of translation study with literature study, especially theatrology, result in the theatrical translation study as a branch of applied translation studies. This paper examines the theatrical translation of Putu Wijaya’s Bila Malam Bertambah Malam (BMBM) as translated into Javanese by Aslam Kussatyo. Galur (GLR), the theatrical translation of BMBM, serves as the object of this study. By applying the theatrical translation strategy, introduced by Susan Bassnett (1991) and covering cuts, adding, and adding with modifications, the writer tries to reveal translation strategies in the translation. The results of the study prove that--during the first phase of translation-- the translator applied a new strategy of theatrical translation (never before exposed by Bassnett) namely cuts with modifications. This strategy is traceable through the analyses of acculturation, gestic text, playtext, and speakability dimensions. While in the second stage of translation, the translators (director and stage crews) applied the strategy of adding with modifications in terms of performability and subtext dimensions. Abstract

The treason in literary translation refers to translator’s subjective efforts to perform any deviation to eliminate any shackles of the language of the source text. Hence, the translated literary work is as close as possible to the characteristics of target readers. Creativity refers to any subjective performance of translator’s artistic scheme fulfilling his or her subjective intention. This article attempts to analyze the translation of William Butler Yeats’-an Irish poet who has won 1946 Nobel Prize in Literature- poem: "The Wild Swans at Coole" through the perspective of creative treason. in translation relating to aspects of personalized translation, omissions, abridged translation and trans-editing, relay translation, and adaptation. The study belongs to qualitative descriptive study and it applied creative treason approach as the core of mediotranslatology theory proposed by Tianzhen (2017). The result of the study proved that both poet-translators, Ikranagara and Asrowi, applied creative treason in several poem structures, namely typography, sound, diction, and rhetoric. The treasons carried out by both poet-translators covers three major categories, namely personalized translation-domestication, omissions, abridged translation which reflecs their individual styles. Abstract

This study investigates the translation of MacLeish’s poem "The Young Dead Soldiers" conducted by Chairil Anwar from two different perspectives, namely rewriting and reception perspectives. The analysis results in several findings. First, the translator manipulates most of the source poem’s features, socio-cultural context, ideology, and the poetics of the source poem so that the translator opposes the poetics of the source poem. Second, the translator alters or distorts MacLeish's intention in setting forth universal true peace by conveying the Indonesian’s armed struggle to defend the soverenity, independence, and to support to Soekarno’s government. Hence, it conforms to the ideology of the “Mimbar Indonesia” magazine, established and run by Sukarno government officials. Third, the translator also tries to present the translated poem as a new poem that is in line with the ideology of the person in chief of the "Kebudajaan" rubric in “Mimbar Indonesia” magazine who did not provide any single room for translation work. The ultimate goal of the manipulation is to provide the translation an acceptance among patrons (being published in the volume) and readers (being assumed as the original work of the translator). Fourth, both linguistic and literary equivalence cannot guarantee the success of literary translation so that the translator takes advantages of his own creativity to examine Indonesian literary infrastructure including patron, readers, ideology, poetics, economy, politics, history, and other structures upholding the Indonesian literary systems for an acceptance. Abstract

Translation can be viewed as a mode of (re)narration as it actively contributes to constructing the worldrather than simply functioning as a mechanism for transferring meaning from one language to another. This study delves into the role of paratext in reframing or (re)constructing various narratives concerning a translated work, Stuart Robson’s The Wedhatama, and highlights how the translator has strategically taken advantage of those paratextual elements to reinterpret the Javanese literary work and to promote his ideological viewpoints. By applying Baker’s social narrative approach, this study identifies that Robson presented personal reflections in his translation and shed light on the personal narrative of the ambiguous authorship of Serat Wedhatama[1]; public narratives presenting some clues might have provided its author with inspiration or impulse to write,under the glory of the Mangkunegaran, stories related to the governments, which flourished under the capable leadership of Mangkunegara IV, and stories about challenging the existing meta-narratives: Panembahan Senapati versus The Prophet, and kejawen versus pure Islam. Finally, Robson presented conceptual narratives, stating that the original work of Serat Wedhatama conveys a profound sense of cultural identity of the noble class. The paratextual elements present in the translation can assist target readers in understanding the translation and enhance the wider cultural narratives, thus playing an active role in the meaning-making process. Serat Wedhatama is believed as a prominent Javanese poetic work known for its ethical and philosophical teachings, especially concerning the concept of divinity and the importance of character education

Abstract

Stylistics theory is an alternative approach in assessing poetry translation. This study investigates the style of both Countee Cullen's poem -"Incident"- as the source text and Taufik Ismail's translation - "Kejadian"- as the target text. Based on a stylistics theory applied to translation proposed by Khomeijani Farahani (2005), both poems as the source of the data are analyzed based on three criteria: the equivalence accuracy, the formal loyalty, and the naturalness of translation. The results of the study proves that there is an obvious gap between them in terms of semantic, pragmatic, and poetic equivalence. In the criterion offormal loyalty, the deviation lies on rhyming pattern. While in the criterion of naturalness, the translator managed to build an easily accepted discourse structure for target text readers.
