Abstract

ABSTRACTThe study discusses Short Message Services (SMS’s) used to express “Happy Idul Fitri” in relation to politeness principle and cooperative principle.The aims of the research are (1) to describe the way of writing the SMS’s, (2) to explain the sentence variety of the SMS’s, (3) to describe the language used in the SMS’s, (4) to explain the variety of relation between the writers and the reader of the SMS’s, and (5) to describe communicative act found in the SMS’s.This research is descriptive-qualitative in nature. The data are 54 SMS’s used to express “Happy Idul Fitri” in 2011. The SMS’s were received by the reseacher from her friends and colleagues. All of the SMS’s were analyzed to reveal the five aims of the research as stated above.The expressions of “Happy Idul Fitri” are found in the initial, middle, and final parts of the SMS’s. Some of them made use of associative language.Due to their variety, the sentences applied in the SMS’s expressing “Happy Idul Fitri” are (1) declarative, (2) imperative, and (3) exclamatory.The languages used in the SMS’s include (1) Indonesian, (2) Indonesian-Arabic, (3) Indonesian-Javanese, (4) Javanese, (5) Indonesian-English, and (6) Indonesian-Arabic-English.While, the relations between the writers and the reader of the SMS’s are of five kinds, namely (1) intimate parallel, (2) respectful parallel, (3) lower respectful writers, (4) lower intimate writers, and (5) neutral parallel.The variety of communicative act used in the SMS’s comprises (1) to express “Happy Idul Fitri”, (2)to apologize, (3) to expect, and (4) to thank.

Abstract

This study tried to answer three questions, namely (1) what are the forms of personal pronoun used to address and to refer to?, (2) what are the factors which influence the use of personal pronoun to address and to refer to?, and (3) what are the degrees of intimacy between the speaker and the listener in the use of personal pronoun to address and to refer to? The research is qualitative-descriptive in nature. It is based on 60 utterances taken from short message services (SMS), BlackBerry Messagers (BBM), and writings in accounts or comments in facebooks. The result of the research indicated that (1) personal pronoun used (a) to address is the second personal pronoun - singular and plural and (b) to refer to is the first personal pronoun - singular and plural as well as the third personal pronoun - singular and plural, (2) the factors influencing the use of personal pronoun to address and to refer to in 10 communicative acts include (a) social environment, (b) local language, and (c) national culture concerning courtesy, and (3) the degrees of intimacy between the speaker and the listener comprise four - (a) intimate, (b) respectful, (c) neutral, and (d) respectful-intimate.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe formal forms, marker characteristics, and meanings of imperative sentences used in Catholic prayer. The research  made use of descriptive qualitative method. The data were analyzed using the following techniques:  (1) paraphrasing, (2) deletion, (3) substitution, (4) expansion, and (5) permutation. The results indicated that (1) the formal forms consist of (a) transitive active imperatives (117 in number), (b) intransitive active imperatives (37 in number), and (c) passive imperatives (4 in number), (2) the  imperative sentences are characteristized by four markers, namely (a) the absence of functional subject  (120 in number),  (b) the usage of particle -lah (109 in number), (c) prefix deletion (92 in number), and (d) the inversion of order, placing verbs at the beginning of sentences, and (3) there are five kinds of meaning of imperative sentences, namely (a) polite command (104 in number), (b) invitation (34 in number), (c) request (14 in number), (d) prohibition/negative command (5 in number), and (e) common order/command (1 in number).

Abstract

This study aimed to describe: (1) grammatical aspects, (2) lexical aspects, (3) contextual, and (4) the content of character education in children's song texts. This study included a descriptive qualitative study of ten song texts namely "Bintang Kejora", "Burung Kutilang", "Dua Mata Saya", "Kebunku", "Kring Kring", "Layang-Layang", "Naik Delman Istimewa", "Naik Gunung","Naik Kereta Api", and “Pelangi". The research results show that (1) grammatical aspects include (a) reference: personal, demonstrative, and comparative, (b) substitution, (c) ellipsis, (d) conjunction, and (e) repetition, (2) lexical aspects include (a) synonymy, (b) antonymy, (c) hyponymy, (d) collocation, (3) the contextual includes the social context of beauty, excitement and rural culture, and (4) the contents of character education include (a) caring, (b) tough, (c) creative, (d) religious, and (e) polite and communicative.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to know the language varieties that are used, to describe the sentence construction, to reveal the communicative act, and to expose the contended charactereducation in political slogans. This is a descriptive qualitative research on 37 political slogans retrieved from news, political portal, or political party’s website on internet. From this research, it is shown that (1) the language varieties that are used in political slogan: 28 data of Indonesian langauge, 7 data of slang expressions, 1 datum of Javanesse language, and 1 data of English language, (2) the sentence constructions that are applied are 20 data of exclamative sentences, 11 data of declarative sentences, 5 data of imperative sentences, and 1 datum of interogative sentence, (3) communicative acts that are shown in 37 data is clasiffied into asserting (20 data), suggesting (11 data), and inviting (6 data), (4)  there are 7 educational values found in political slogans, they are (a) 11 data of caring values, (b) 8 data of creative values, (c) 6 data of tough values, (d) 4 data of nasionalism values, (e) 3 data of politeness and communicativeness value, (f) 3 data of religious values, and (g) 2 data of honesty values.
