Abstract

Language anxiety constitutes a psychological phenomenon that commonly impacts second/foreign language (L2) learning and performance. Although language anxiety has been extensively studied in L2 research, there is a lack of research on the relationship between speaking anxiety and pronunciation accuracy. To address this gap, the current study investigates the potential influence of speaking anxiety on pronunciation accuracy in L2 speaking. Data were obtained from 30 Indonesian learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). These learners completed an L2 speaking task and a questionnaire. The speaking task assessed the learners’ ability to pronounce English words, while the questionnaire measured their levels of speaking anxiety. A correlational analysis of the data revealed a very weak correlation between speaking anxiety and pronunciation accuracy among the Indonesian EFL learners, and this correlation was not statistically significant: ρ(28) = 0.052, two-tailed p = 0.785. These findings suggest that the reported levels of speaking anxiety among the learners do not significantly impact their pronunciation accuracy in the given L2 English speaking task. This study contributes to the existing knowledge by shedding light on the underexplored relationship between L2 speaking anxiety and pronunciation accuracy.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of English suffixes in narrative writing by Thai learners of English as a foreign language. Given the significance of suffixes in second/foreign language acquisition, understanding how Thai learners employ suffixes in narrative contexts is crucial. A descriptive approach was adopted, with data collected from 12 eighth-grade students at Tarbiatulwatan Mulniti Junior High School in Thailand. The students' narrative writing assignments were analyzed to identify their usage of key inflectional suffixes (-ed, -s/es, -est, and -ing) and derivational suffixes (e.g., -ly). The findings revealed that students commonly utilized inflectional suffixes to mark past tense, plural nouns, and superlative adjectives. However, some students demonstrated difficulties with spelling, particularly when converting words ending in "y" to "i." Additionally, the use of derivational suffixes was limited, with only a few instances of employing the -ly suffix to form adverbs. These findings shed light on Thai learners' proficiency in using English suffixes in narrative writing and have implications for language pedagogy. Understanding the challenges they face can aid educators in developing targeted instructional strategies to enhance suffix usage. Further research is warranted to explore factors influencing the learning of derivational suffixes and to extend this study to learners of varying proficiency levels.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the phenomenon of code mixing in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms, particularly focusing on students in a responsive speaking class at Universitas Muhammadiyah Jember. The research aims to identify the types of code mixing used, the contexts in which it occurs, and the reasons behind its usage. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews. The analysis revealed that students frequently employ code mixing during group discussions and presentations. Four main types of code mixing were identified: word insertion, phrase insertion, hybrid forms, and clause mixing. The findings suggest that code mixing helps students articulate their ideas more effectively, especially when facing vocabulary limitations or feeling anxious. It also serves as a communicative strategy that supports language acquisition by boosting confidence and aiding understanding. This study concludes that code mixing is not merely a linguistic shortcut but a meaningful tool in the language learning process. The implications of this research underscore the pedagogical value of integrating code mixing into classroom practices to support EFL learners' speaking development.

Abstract

Effective writing instruction is crucial for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Nonetheless, teaching cause-and-effect sentences remains a challenge. The current study aims to examine the effectiveness of puzzle media in addressing this challenge. The study employed a pre-experimental, pre-test/post-test design with one group of participants comprising Indonesian high school students. Specifically, this group underwent a pre-test, instructional treatments using puzzle media, and a post-test, along with a questionnaire. The pre-test and post-test were intended to gauge the effectiveness of puzzle media on cause-and-effect sentences as reflected in the participants’ ability to use these constructions before vs. after receiving the instructional treatments, whereas the questionnaire was intended to explore their views of the given instructional treatment. The data, comprising the participants’ scores on the pre-test and post-test, were analysed using a paired-sample t-test. Results reveal a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores, indicating that puzzle media is effective in teaching cause-and-effect sentences to EFL learners. Furthermore, the analysis of the participants’ responses on the questionnaire indicates that 62.1% of participants found puzzle media engaging and helpful in writing tasks. This study concludes that incorporating puzzle media into EFL writing instruction can enhance learners’ mastery of cause-and-effect sentences and foster a more engaging learning experience.

Abstract

This study examines the question types used by Indonesian English language teachers in high school classrooms and their impact on student engagement. The data were derived from two YouTube videos showcasing English language teaching in real classroom contexts. The questions posed by the teachers during the English language lessons were coded according to two criteria: convergent and divergent questions. Student engagement is measured by the number of responses to the teachers’ questions. The results reveal that the predominant type of questions used by the teachers during the lessons were convergent questions, which seek specific information or recall from students, while divergent questions, which encourage open-ended and varied responses, were used much less frequently. Furthermore, student engagement remained limited across both question types, with only a few students participating in responding. These findings highlight the prevalence of a traditional instructional approach characterized by convergent questions. The article concludes with some suggestions for utilizing alternative instructional interventions that can promote more interactive questioning practices and potentially enhance student engagement during English language instruction.

Abstract

Listening is essential for language development, underpinning skills like speaking, reading, and writing. Effective media choice in teaching is crucial since research emphasizes that comprehensible input and active engagement are vital for listening comprehension (Richards, 2008; Sadiku, 2015; Vandergrift, 1999). Harmer (2007) asserts that engaging with input is key for language activation, while recent studies (Danxin Liang, 2013; Chen Chan et al., 2014) suggest that audiovisual materials enhance comprehension by providing visual stimuli that aid attention and schema activation. This study explores how animated videos affect listening comprehension among 16 senior English language education students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Jember. Participants were exposed to both video and audio materials on nostalgia and melancholy, respectively, and answered 10 multiple-choice questions for each type. Analysis using a dependent sample t-test revealed no significant difference between the audio-only and video conditions, with a t-value of -0.522, a p-value of 0.609, and minimal effect sizes (Cohen's d of -0.131 and Hedges' g of -0.124). Despite theoretical support from dual-coding and multimedia learning theories, the study found negligible benefits from visual aids. Possible influencing factors include learner proficiency, content complexity, cognitive load, and low motivation.
