Abstract

One of the human attributes is the ability to process language.  Over the last few decades, we have learned a lot more about its neurological foundation that specific linguistic functions are believed to be supported by various brain’s sections in left and right hemispheres. However, studies have shown that language comprehension and grammar depend on other areas of the brain outside the so-called Broca's region, which corresponds to Brodmann areas 44 and 45. It has been linked to an expanded brain activity including BA44, BA45, and BA47, the anterior insula (BA13), the mesial part of the supplementary motor area (the lateral expansion of BA6), and the bottom layer of the forebrain. Studies have also exposed the brain’s memory systems in language learning, storage, and usage, which are called as declarative/procedural memory systems. Further, studies have unveiled that these declarative/procedural memory systems can be enhanced through interventions. Thus, understanding these issues is advantageous for language teachers/instructors to know how the brain works in learning a language and its grammar, which is vital to have effective teaching and learning. Such understanding may lead teachers to develop their syllabus and materials, select strategies and methods, and design various class activities that result in effective learning.

Abstract

The aim of the current study was to investigate the effectiveness of the use of Wordwall on the quality of students’ EFL writing skills. Wordwall, a web-based application, is one of the AI-based applications that is used to facilitate teaching-learning activities. It can help students in improving their writing skills, which is essential for EFL skills mastery. However, a lot of students had difficulty in attaining the skill because of some factors such as a lack of vocabulary and other grammar competencies. The data sources were from the result of the score in narrative fractured text made by students in Sekolah Menengah Atas (Senior High School). The method employed in this study was quantitative with an ex post facto design. The measurement of writing test as the data was measured using several criteria followed by a component of writing adapted from Heaton (1988) in Fitriani, et al. (2014). The components of writing skills consisted of content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. The result of this investigation indicated that a class taught along with Wordwall attained an average score of 16.17. Meanwhile, the average value for a class taught using a printed English textbook was 14.43. The results of the independent t-test had a significant difference of 0.000, which meant that it was significantly less than < 0.05. It revealed that the null hypothesis was disregarded, which implied that there was a significant variation in values of the class with used Wordwall (AI) and that without using the AI-based application, i.e., Wordwall. Therefore, it could be concluded that the students’ EFL writing skills who learned English by using Wordwall were better than those of printed English textbooks.

The research design is a mixed method (Qualitative quantitative research). Data collected in two ways: Conduct a questionnaire in the form of Google forms application and interview with the teachers through Goggle Meetings. This research is dealing with four respondents from two different schools. This research proposes the question, “What are the challenging aspects faced by English teachers in teaching writing descriptive text and how do they encounter them?”. Based on the data, in the face of poor communication and lack of motivation, they provide platforms and applications for teachers to monitor and ensure good communication with students using Google Classroom and WhatsApp. Teachers also encourage students to follow up by providing the teachers’ number so that they can chat privately with the teacher if they do not understand the material or the assignment. Due to a lack of financial resources and lack of access mainly to internet data, the teachers gave the students some time to complete their assignments and suggested they use the school’s Wi-Fi.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of applying metacognitive strategies on the expository reading comprehension achievement of vocational high school students. The research utilized a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test-post-test control group model, involving 32 eleventh-grade students at SMKS Muhammadiyah Jember. The experimental group (n=16) received an intervention consisting of metacognitive strategy instruction facilitated by a reflection table, while the control group (n=16) followed conventional instruction. Data were collected through reading comprehension tests and analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test due to the non-normal distribution of the control group's post-test data. The findings revealed a statistically significant improvement in the experimental group from pre-test to post-test (p=0.002), whereas no significant change was observed in the control group (p=0.101). It is concluded that metacognitive strategies, particularly when implemented with a structured reflection tool, are a highly effective intervention for improving expository text comprehension in the vocational education context
