Abstract

Pandemic has forced us to work and learn from home. Data shows a significant increase in internet usage during the pandemic. People have longer working time, online meetings and sometimes they have to do several meetings at the same time (simultaneously). Then, how do you make a presentation when it has to be fragmented? This paper aimed to identify how you perform digital dramaturgy through simultaneous video conference. The frame of reference was built using Goffman’s Dramaturgy and Mead’s Self. The study was carried out under the construction paradigm and data were collected from observations and interviews with educators who carried out teaching and learning through zoom and g-meet. The results show that digital dramaturgy appears in backstage preparation and front-stage performances. The interesting finding is when there is a simultaneous meeting, the Self appears on the front stage where the camera and the mic are on, but the Self is also on the back stage when the video camera and mic are off. Then, the third situation, which I call In-between Region, appears when part of the Self appears on the front stage, but other parts appear on the back stage.

Abstract

Body that was originally inviolable has changed as it turns out that with the existing technological innovations, body can be changed and reconstructed like replacing engine parts. In this digital era, body can be transformed into a non-material form and reconstructed. Digital data can be embedded and avatars can be formed or created. The conclusion of this writing is that digital body is a non-material body containing horcruxes, digital objects of dwelling words and thoughts, in the form of digital data and avatars, which refer to extended-self in a post-human era with characteristics of controlled-dematerialized self, hyperreality-re embodiment self, social-supportive self, developed-extended self, and social-affi liated self.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the lack of research on the symbolic violence that raised the precarious workers as their subjects. Most studies on symbolic violence that occur in organizations are focused on hierarchical organizations, where obviously dominant and dominated positions are already visible. The phenomenon of precarious workers in Indonesia is widely discussed in the various field of academic, especially the field of law that discusses the unavailability of laws governing online transportation business. The absence of such laws, then becomes a chance for online transportation companies to gain profit by abusing the interests of others (in this case, their partners). Precarious workers in the online transportation business are recruited with a partnership agreement, which should place their position equal to the e-commerce transportation company. But in reality, precarious workers are dominated by e-commerce transportation companies. This study aims to determine the symbolic violence received by precarious workers in the online transport business. This study used the concept of symbolic violence from Pierre Bourdieu, where symbolic violence is closely related to doxa, habitus, capital and arena. This research uses the paradigm of critical constructivism and is descriptive qualitative research. This study also used in-depth interviews of 4 informants as the data collection techniques. The results of this study indicate the occurrence of symbolic violence towards precarious worker in the cooperative relations (partnership agreement) with the e-commerce company in the form of bonus gains policy, tariff policy, and punishment policy. This study has identified the doxa, habitus, capital and arena that encourage symbolic violence towards precarious workers. This study also found that there are two types of precariat workers and differing acceptance of symbolic violence. The differences are influenced by factors such as gender and the motive of the precarious workers when they join the e-commerce company.

Abstract

In contemporary society, the migration of interactions among millennials, particularly Muslim women serving as influencers, to digital platforms has spurred an intriguing shift. However, this transition is fraught with complexities as these women encounter digital media panopticism, constraining their liberty of expression. This study delves into the propagation of hijab discourse within millennial influencer circles via digital channels, aiming to unveil the established truths propagated by authoritative figures. Employing Foucault’s notion of panopticism, discursive practices, and Howe-Strauss’ Millennial generation, this research employs critical constructionism, qualitative methodologies, and in-depth interviews to unravel the pervasive digital panopticism shaping the disciplined digital personas of these influencers. The investigation uncovers how authorities utilize digital panopticism to regulate influencers, aligning with Foucault’s theories. This discreet strategy amplifies influence while perpetuating continuous surveillance through participatory transparency. By penalizing deviations from the hijab discourse, authorities instill fear, prompting self-discipline on social media platforms. Despite influencers’ vigilance, the opaque nature of control fosters ambiguity, highlighting the subtle yet profound impact of power dynamics in digital spaces. This observation echoes Foucault’s discourse on subtle regulatory mechanisms in contemporary society, underscoring the pervasive influence of power dynamics in digital spheres.

Abstract

Some time ago, Indonesia was amazed by the presence of a female celebrity named "Lentari van Lorainne" who is familiarly called Riri. Riri's figure is the center of attention because she is Indonesia's first virtual celebrity created based on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The media depiction of Riri's figure is very identical to the depiction of the feminine gender promoted by patriarchy. This article will use Gramsci's thinking about Hegemony, and is equipped with the concepts of hyperbody, gender ideology, gender stereotypes and Artificial Intelligence. The paradigm used is critical with a text analysis method from the most posts on Lentari van Lorainne's account, @lentaripagi. The results of the research show that the figure of Riri also perpetuates gender stereotypes of the female body by presenting Riri as a young woman with beautiful associations that make people stunned, has an ideal body and a beautiful Indonesian-Dutch face, likes sports and travelling and is charming. This perpetuation occurs through posts and comments on Riri's Instagram account. This perpetuation was carried out by the traditional intellectuals behind the creation of the character Riri as a hyperentity. There is no counter to the hegemony of gender ideology found in this paper.

Abstract

Gender ideology, which refers to gender roles has been constructed and separated the roles of men and women using the terms femininity and masculinity. This ideology is believed by society and then forms a hegemony. Hegemony is also spread through popular film culture. Often, films perpetuate gender inequality and portray women as marginal figures under male domination. However, the phenomenon of hegemony gives rise to an oppositional force known as Organic Intellectuals. These organic intellectuals frequently resist existing domination through films. This research aims to investigate how counter-hegemony is depicted in Barbie (2023). Employing a critical paradigm, a qualitative approach, and critical discourse analysis, this study dissects the text in the film by examining the subject-object position and the audience's position in Barbie (2023). The analysis reveals that the film, Barbie (2023) illustrates the hegemony depicted by the opposing actors, similar to films in general. However, resistance is evident in the film, with the director, also functioning as an organic intellectual, expressing feminist ideas. This portrayal acts as a counter to the hegemony of gender stereotypes in Barbie (2023).
