Abstract

The research examines the existence of Indonesian National Gallery in Jakarta. The Indonesian National Gallery is managed by the government. The focus of the research is in the contribution of Indonesian National Gallery in Indonesian fine arts development, especially in the local fine arts development and to understand strategy or effort of Indonesian National Gallery in managing an organization for fine arts activities and its stake holder’s network. The research also discusses a glance about management problems applied in the National Gallery. The research method, research kind or research model is a qualitative descriptive research, by using phenomenology and curatorial approach which is the management of Indonesian national Gallery and phenomena of the result of the interaction between the subjects involved in the Indonesian National Gallery activities, and understand the situation, the events, and the meaning existed in Indonesian  National Gallery. Data are collected from interviews, especially person involved in the structure of Indonesian National Gallery organization and several persons related with the existence of the gallery, such as artist and curator. Another data is book taken from Indonesian National Gallery and also the books containing articles about the gallery and the pictures used as the observing technique in this research. Data collecting uses open interview technique (not structured natural interview), direct observation with situation observer, events, and everything related with the events happened in Indonesian National gallery. Data analysis uses cycle analysis related each other which is interactive analysis related with several steps: data collection, data reduction, data presentation and conclusion. Research result: Indonesian National Gallery is able to stand and exist and experience long journey because of the strong efforts from the government officials in the department of education and culture. The facilities and the infrastructures of Indonesian national gallery is quite representative even though the building used is a former school, at first it is not designed to become a gallery. The contribution of Indonesian National Gallery is very wide; it is opened for everyone for education, training, information service, and appreciation purposes. Indonesian National Gallery opens itself for cooperation inter related instances existed in several regions. It also provides place for the person wanting to held exhibition there. National Gallery management is quite good proven by many art activities held in regional, national, and even international level which has been conducted successfully. The collection of fine arts works in Indonesian National gallery is quite many with 1750 fine arts works; some of them are a grant from foreign countries. The existence of chosen curator make Indonesian National Gallery has a good image in Indonesian fine arts. And no less important, Indonesian National gallery always keeps its quality by using selection system for everyone who proposes to make exhibition there, both from the invitation from Indonesian National Gallery and from the proposal proposed by the artist who desire to held exhibition there. Key word:  Gallery , management, contribution.

Abstract

Adi Sumarmo airport in Surakarta is an international airport located at Boyolali regency which is close to Surakarta city. The aesthetic aspects and elements of the architecture and interior of the airport as an international one should give a strong impression. The character, style and meaning of the aesthetic elements used to beautify the interior and exterior should be adjusted to the vision and mission of Adisumarmo airport, in this case Angasa Pura I. This research was carried out as an effort to discourse on an alternative design of a publick space. That’s why, this research studied the aesthetic elements of a public space and it aimed at providing Angkasa Pura I, Adi Sumarmo airport an alternative design of a public space. The other goal was that Adi Sumarmo airport would look more beautiful with the wisdom of local culture. This research is designed as a research studying the creation of a work of public art in a publick space located at Adi Sumarmo airport. The steps of the research are adjusted to the method for creating a work of art such as (1) an observation on the space form into which the work of art would be placed and the library study on public art and culture which would be an icon of Surakarta. (2) the data analysis and validation which would be used as the base or souce of creation, (3) the designing stage which brings out some alternative designs of a work of publick art which later become the aesthetic elements of the airport and a landmark of Surakarta as a city of culture. The result of this research is an alternative design of public art for the interior of Adi Sumarmo airport (Angkasa Pura I) consisting of a mural, reliefs of stone or brass/ bronze, threedimension statue, and a glass painting. The alternative design of public art for the interior of Adi Sumarmo airport (Angkasa Pura I) is adjusted to the image of the airport, the vision and mission of the airport as well as the aesthetic elements taken from the local culture, Javanese culture. Abstract

This research is a study on an installation work of art based on an experimentation exploring new possibilities of the product of gembreng (zinc) handicrafts in Kabangan market, Laweyan, Surakarta. The product is used as one of the aesthetic elements of the installation art in a ready made shape or anew one which can be developed using a technique craftsmen in Kabangan market have. This research aims at studying to create an installation work of art with zinc as the main medium. This research is designed as an explorative developing research. Therefore, it tends to be experimentative to find possible innovation in shape, technique, medium, and material exploration. The data were collected through in-depth interview and an observation in the zinc industrial centre in Kabangan market, Laweyan, Surakarta. The subjects of this research were the craftmen of zinc to find out the technique they usually used and the technical achievement which could be explored to create an installationwork of art. The object observed in this research was the product produced and the technique used to create the handicraft in Kabangan market. It is important to do this to find out various possibilities of developing shapes as an aesthetic element of an installation work of art.To enhance the validity andquality of the work of art in this research, “trial and see” or the controlled trying out by an adaptive strategy is used. The data were analyzed using SWOT analysis and the result of the analysis was used as the principle to make an installation work of art. The idea of shape in this installation work of artis based on Garuda and Jatayu, a kind of birds thought to be sacred in Javanese myth. The stages in creating this work of fine art are as follows: exploration, improvisation, and shaping. The result of this research is an installation work of art of which the main material is zinc and its shape, colour and ornament originate in Javanese culture.Keywords: Javanese myth, handicraft made of zinc, installation work of art.

Abstract

This research entitled “Souvenir Models as an Improvement of Aesthetic Quality and Product Variety in Gembreng Crafts Center, PasarKabanganLaweyan Surakarta” in general aimed to improve the quality and product variants in Gembreng Crafts Center, PasarKabanganLaweyan Surakarta, followed by aesthetic product variants that are able to represent the city of Surakarta as an increasing competitiveness in the global market.  The specific purpose of this research is to develop the competitiveness of gembreng handicraft products with other souvenirs such as batik, wood or metal so as to attract the attention and interest of domestic and foreign tourists and indirectly also increase the income of the craftsmen.This research applied explorative exploratory research method. Therefore, it tends to be experimental; looking for novelty possibilities in the techniques and design of souvenir aesthetic products.  Data collection techniques undertaken by researchers were observations and in-depth interviews at the gembreng industry center in Pasar Kabangan Laweyan, Surakarta. The subject of this research was the gembreng craftsmen, with the aim of knowing the techniques they use and the techniques that can be explored for new products planned.  In addition, this study also interviewed some artists and culture bearers in Surakarta to find a visual image that can represent the city of Surakarta as a cultural city. Objects observed in this study were the results of the products that have been produced and the manufacturing techniques of handicraft products.  It is important to look for various possibilities for the development of the planned product designs. The existing data were validated by data reduction techniques and then they were analyzed. The results of this analysis were the basis for the development of souvenir product designs in the gembreng crafts center, Pasar Laweyan, Surakarta.The results of this development research were in the form of prototype gembreng-based souvenir products with a variety of possible variants, both the form and creativity.
