Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate the use of dictation strategy in teaching listening for students. The researcher used library research to collect the data for this research. Library research is an activity of collecting materials related to a research originating from books, scientific journals, literatures and other publications, which are worthy as the sources that the researcher examined, by describing the data through opinions of experts. The researcher used qualitative approach for this research in order to provide comprehensive facts about dictation strategy in teaching listening. The findings reveal that dictation is very useful for teaching listening to students. Dictation can improve students’ listening skills, enhance students confidence and motivation, and enable students to understand English pronunciation in detail. With the existence of dictation, students can improve their abilities, especially their listening skills. By using dictation, the teacher can teach listening to the students efficiently, so that the learning objectives can be achieved. The benefit of this research is to add insight for the readers regarding the use of dictation strategy to teach listening for the students.

Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim of finding the influence of podcast in improving students’ listening skill, especially for senior high school students. The method in this research is qualitative research method, where researchers collected data through questionnaires filled by the students and short interviews with students. The subjects in this research were the students of class XI Mia 1 in SMA Swasta Assisi Siantar. Based on research that the researchers did, researchers found that podcast is a media that has effect on students’ learning processes, especially when studying listening skill. Podcast is one of the learning media that makes students interested and motivated to learn listening in English.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze pronouns used in a story with title “Cinderella” by Disney. Researchers chose descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data in order to show pronouns that appeared in the story of Cinderella. There were several steps that researchers conducted to collect data, including read the story, then identified the pronouns, and finally analyzed each pronoun from the story descriptively. This research found that there were 15 pronouns used in the story of Cinderella with six types of pronoun. These pronouns include 5 personal pronouns as subject (They, She, It, He, and I), 2 personal pronouns as object (her and them), 3 possessive adjectives (her, his, and their), 2 relative pronouns (whose and who), 2 demonstrative pronouns (this and that), and 1 indefinite pronoun (everyone). In addition, the pronoun that appeared the most was “her” as much as 22.92%, and conversely, pronoun that appeared the least were “their, this, whose, I, everyone, and who”, which each of them only appeared 1 time in the story (2.08% for each pronoun).

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the types of English sentences based on function consisting of declarative sentence, interrogative sentence, exclamatory sentence, and imperative sentence found in the folklore “Jack and The Beanstalk”. The method in this research was descriptive qualitative with research source obtained from the American Literature website. The results of this research showed that in the folklore “Jack and The Beanstalk” there were four types of English sentences based on function. Type of sentence that appeared most frequently in the folklore “Jack and The Beanstalk” was declarative sentences (46 times), followed by the exclamatory sentences (13 times). Meanwhile, the types of sentences that appeared the least were interrogative sentences (2 times) and imperative sentences (2 times). Or in percentage form, as many as 73% of the sentences in the folkore “Jack and The Beanstalk” were declarative sentences, as many as 21% were exclamatory sentences, as many as 3% were an interrogative sentences, and as many as 3% were imperative sentences.

Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim of finding the usefulness and benefits of picture as a teaching strategy or media of teaching to teach writing skill to the students. The method in this research was classroom action research method, which was carried out in two cycles. Subjects or participants in this study were the students at SMP Negeri 7 Pematangsiantar, precisely the IX-4 students. The researchers collected data from the test results of students on the implementation of picture in writing a text. In addition, the data were also obtained through observation results carried out in the learning process. Based on the results of research that the researchers obtained, it was proven that the use of picture had effects on student learning abilities. Their writing abilities increased after using pictures as medium in writing a text.
