Abstract

         Some studies have revealed that critical thinking is related to language proficiency. This research examined the correlation between critical thinking and writing ability in English. This correlational study involved 44 students from the English educational program at STKIP Abdi Pendidikan Payakumbuh who had taken the general writing subject, using total sampling. The instruments included a questionnaire to assess students' critical thinking and official academic records for writing scores. The Pearson Product Moment formula was used to analyze the data. Results indicated a significant positive correlation (r_xy = 0.362, p < 0.05), confirming that critical thinking skills are related to writing ability. This finding highlights that writing, which involves the clear articulation of ideas, constructing arguments, and presenting evidence, inherently requires critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Latar belakang masalah didalam sebuah skripsi dimaksudkan untuk menjelaskan alasan mengapa masalah dalam penelitian ingin diteliti, pentingnya permasalahan dan pendekatan yang digunakan untuk menyelesaikan masalah tersebut baik dari sisi teoritis dan praktis. Dalam menulis latar belakang masalah dalam sebuah skripsi, berpikir kritis sangat diperlukan. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti focus menganalisis aspek berpikir kritis (focus, supporting reasons, reasoning, organization, conventions, and integration) yang diterapkan oleh siswa dalam menulis latar belakang masalah di skripsi. Hasil penelitian ini adalah rata-rata nilai aspek berpikir kritis mahasiswa dalam menulis latar belakang masalah dalam skripisi yang ditulis oleh mahasiswa program Bahasa Inggris di STKIP Yayasan Abdi Pendidikan yang lulus pada tahun akademik 2020/2021 adalah 64.4 yang dikategorikan sebagai unclear category. Dengan nilai yang didapat pada setiap aspek adalah 70.4 untuk aspek focus dengan kategory clear enough, 60.6 untuk aspek supporting reason dengan categori unclear; 54.5 untuk aspek reasoning dengan kategori unclear ; 69.7 untuk aspek organization dengan kategori clear enough ; 66.7 untuk aspek convention dengan kategori clear enough dan 61.3 untuk aspek integration dengan kategori unclear.

Abstract

Critical Thinking skill is the ability of cognitive process in developing logical and reflective judgement about what someone believes and does and the ability to analyze and evaluate thought.Critical thinking skill will help the students to decide what sources of information that will be used to support their idea, how to interpret those infomation and organize their writing to be more logical and accurate. The Discussion section in the thesis presents and discusses the findings in details and it needs the reseacher strong argument to convince the reader about the findings. The purpose of the research is to find out and explain the six core of critical thinking skills reflected in discussion section of the thesis written by the graduate english students of Universitas Negeri Padang. The source of data in this research was 9 documents of discussion section of the thesis written by graduate English students of Universitas Negeri Padang. Descriptive using qualitative approach was used in this research. The result of this research reveal that there were 244 times critical thinking skill reflected in the 9 documents of discussion section of the theses written by graduate english students of Universitas Negeri Padang. The finding shows that the students applied four skills out of six critical thinking skills in writing discussion section of the thesis. They were explanation skill 97 times (39.75%), analysis skill 95 times (38.93%), interpretation skill 43 times (17.62%), and inference skill 9 times (3.68%). The evaluation skill and self-regulation skill did not found in this research. Those skills are important skills in writing discussion section of thesis which basically contain depth exploration of the result of the research, interpreting it, and comparing it with existing and relevant theory.
