Abstract

For students majoring in education, the teaching internship program is mandatory. Along with employing the Kurikulum Merdeka in schools, student teachers must also prepare to use it through the teaching internship program. This study aims to investigate student teachers’ readiness and challenges for the teaching internship program. This study employs both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to achieve its objectives. In all, 40 English Language Education Study Program student teachers batch 2020 at Universitas Negeri Jakarta completed questionnaires and participated in Focused Group Discussions focusing on their readiness and challenges based on key teaching competences, enabling competences, professional conduct, and personality. The research uncovered student teachers level of readiness and challenges in 'administration', 'methodology: knowledge and skills', 'assessment', and 'lesson and course preparation' to Kurikulum Merdeka as ‘developing readiness’ and ‘mostly challenging’. However, they perceived ‘approaching readiness’ and views them as ‘mostly not challenging’ aspects as in 'digital media implementation,' 'professional behavior', 'personality', and 'intercultural skills'. Because prior studies did not cover these areas all at once, the knowledge obtained through this research study applies locally.

Abstract

Abstract: The teaching of English has become entangled between standard English and regional varieties of English in light of sociolinguistics of globalization. Supported by World Englishes (WE) paradigm, English varieties created for local audiences are thought to improve standard English. Yet, due to the lack of teaching resources (such as textbooks) that address WE perspectives, it may be challenging to show WE as both a paradigm and a reality that is constantly present in the development of teaching English in a regional context. The purpose of this study is to identify any instances of WE perspectives on pedagogy in a textbook that had received government endorsement and to highlight any suggestive characteristics that help to make these WE perspectives operational. Analysis was conducted multimodally to texts and images on the content of learning materials presented in the textbook. Analysis to content and presentation of the textbook indicates that using local language effectively helps local learners understand the differences between the two forms of English without undervaluing the less widely used variety as a foreign language. Findings of this study also suggest that when teachers comprehend the relationship between local culture and the English language taught to the students, this might lead to the deployment of a pedagogical tool that allows various perspectives for language teaching and learning. Keywords: World English, standard English, local varieties, textbook, content

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the nature of collaboration in an EFL collaborative editing task, particularly the evidence of first language (L1) use and patterns of interaction that students used and formed when working with a passage editing task. The study recruited 22 students in grade eleven of SMA Xaverius, Pringsewu. The study follows the framework of Storchs’ dyadic interaction pattern (2002) and Storch and Aldosari's L1 function to code and analyze its data. The data of this study were transcripts of 11 pairs of students participating in an EFL editing task. This study found that the number of first-language use is bigger than the target language use. In percentage, the student average produced around 55,7% of words in the first language and 43,3% of words in the second language. The main function of the L1 is for grammar deliberation, followed by the deliberations over vocabulary (20,2% of all L1 turns), task management (11,1% of all L1 turns), mechanics deliberation (5% of all L1 turns), and last is generating ideas (4,5% of all L1 turns). The main interaction pattern used by the learners was the collaborative pattern (eight out of eleven pairs). The remaining pairs fit dominant/dominant, dominant/passive, and Expert/novice for each of the pair, respectively.

Abstract

The advancement of the internet and the accessibility of technology has led to the development of online learning. Especially in this pandemic situation, students are forced to attend online learning despite their readiness. This study then aimed to explore the challenges faced by students of the English Language Study Program when attending online learning. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The researcher gained the data by distributing questionnaires to students of the English Language Study Program from three universities in Jakarta, which are Universitas Negeri Jakarta, Universitas Muhammadiyah Prof. DR. Hamka, and Universitas Pamulang. The findings revealed that the students are facing the challenges in both pedagogical challenges and technical challenges. One of the challenges in pedagogical challenges is the results of students' work are not optimal due to a large number of assignments and lack of allocated time. While in technical categories, one of the challenges is the internet speed which is mostly slow due to bad weather or bad providers.
