Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the association between diabetes-related nutrition knowledge and body weight status among non-diabetic young adults. This cross-sectional study utilized a questionnaire assessing socio-demographic and Diabetes-Related Nutrition Knowledge-Questionnaire (DRNK-Q). Weight, height, and waist circumference were measured using standard protocols, and body weight categories were established using the Body Mass Index (BMI). Data from 320 young adults, aged 18‒26 years old, were collected from Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM). Participants were divided into two categories based on their knowledge scores. Overall, the study's respondents exhibited low DRNK (52.8%) and high DRNK (47.2%). Majority of respondents have normal body weight (55.7%); nevertheless, there is no relationship between body weight and diabetes-related nutrition knowledge. To conclude, there is no knowledge difference between cadet and non-cadet. Therefore, public health initiatives must customize interventions suitable to support behavior and lifestyle changes based on the amount of diabetes awareness.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of undernutrition, diet quality and its associated factors among children aged two to six years at Tuba Island. A total of 67 children paired with their mother or caregiver were participated in this study. A questionnaire containing socio-demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements and two days of 24-hours dietary recall was administered. The Malaysian Healthy Eating Index (HEI) was used to assess the children’s diet quality. The prevalence of underweight, stunting and wasting were 22.4%, 20.8% and 17.9%, respectively. Mean total HEI score was 37.1±6.3, which indicate poor diet. The children had low mean scores for vegetables, fruits, milk and dairy products as well as legumes. For socio-demographic factors, number of children per household was associated with diet quality. This study points out that overall low dietary score among these children and their diet quality had no association with their growth status. The low diet quality was prevalent; thus it did not contribute to differences in growth status among these children. Therefore, it is suggested further intervention should be taken to improve the nutrition quality of these children.

Abstract

The study aims to measure the current nutritional status and factors contributing to food consumption during hospitalization at Hospital Ampang. This is a cross-sectional study of 206 patients consisting of 104 males and 102 females respectively between 18 to 70 years of age. Data obtained from Factors Influencing Dietary Intake of Hospitalized Patients Questionnaire and Nutritional Risk Screening (NRS 2002). We used standardized methods to measure weight, height. Body weight categories were defined based on Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI of participants was 26.08±4.56 kgm-2 and 52.0% (107) of participants had low risk of malnutrition and at risk of malnutrition. 85.4% admitted that the food tasted different. To conclude, patients’ low consumption of food during hospitalization should be enhanced. Thus, it is essential to implement effective strategies and interventions to increase dietary intake among hospitalized patients to fulfill their nutritional requirements and encourage quick recovery.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to investigate the food security issues arising in gastronomic tourism, to verify the food insecurity experiences encountered by tourists, and to determine the tourists’ dining satisfaction from the gastronomic tourism experiences in Malaysia. A quantitative approach was selected for this study. These issues were concluded from the data collection via questionnaire forms disseminated online through multiple social media platforms consisting of 250 participants of both local and international tourists visiting Malaysia. The Independent T-test and Mann-Whitney test were used as the main statistical test to establish if any tourist groups had food security-related issues during their visit. The results showed that local tourists are more likely to be affected by food security issues, food insecurity, and dining experiences. Overall, this study discovered that both local and international tourists have contrasting experiences in gastronomy tourism in Malaysia.
