Abstract

This article examines the conferring of honorary doctorates in Indonesian universities, which has increased significantly in the last twenty years, 2000-2020. This research applies the document analysis method; data obtained from public documents from government, universities, magazines, and newspapers. Normatively, the university conferred the Doctor Honoris Causa to individuals with outstanding service or work and contributed to science, technology, culture, humanity, and society. The study reveals that the Indonesian authorities have issued three amended regulations regarding honorary doctorates between 2000-2020. This policy provides increased flexibility to universities in determining the awarding of honorary degrees compared to previous regulations. This research has uncovered an evolutionary trajectory of shifting away from awarding the honorary doctorates to the academic community towards non-academic and even political circles and public officials. Such a policy or practice invites criticisms that this signifies an exchange of interests between campus leaders and the power establishment in Indonesia. The analysis of this research reveals that with the decentralization of power during the post-reformation era, there is a transformation of institutional logic of higher education from recognizing knowledge advancement and scientific contributions of members of intelligentsia towards empowering the legitimacy of ruling establishments, especially among politicians and powerful public officials.

Abstract

This paper explores the development of the new Arabic loanwords in the Indonesian language during the second half of the Reform Era. The study examines primary and secondary sources to identify recent Arabic loanwords, which conclude six relevant words: ‘kalas‘, ‘qurani‘, ‘islah‘, ‘kafah‘, ‘ajib‘, and ‘harem‘. The analysis reveals that kafah and ajib have been added recently to the online dictionary edition, Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI). The KBBI identified kafah as an Arabic loanword, while ajib transformed its vocal articulation and is now recognized as a loanword. The research also sheds light on the influence of Arabic on the Indonesian language. This paper contributes to the understanding of the development of the Indonesian language and the role of loanwords in shaping the language. The study's findings also highlight the importance of language standardization and the role of dictionaries in shaping and reflecting the linguistic landscape of Indonesia.

Abstract

This study focuses on presenting how young people in Yogyakarta navigate traditional authority in their daily lives amid the dominance of rational legal authority. The research context was conducted in the context of understanding the phenomenon of a series of large-scale demonstrations in Indonesia from late August to early September 2025. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data collection was conducted through direct interviews with five young people native to Yogyakarta who are pursuing higher education in Yogyakarta. The specific location that became the locus of this study was Yogyakarta for three main reasons. First, the unique socio-political conditions in Yogyakarta, which combine a democratic government system and a royal palace system. Second, the awareness of the youth of Yogyakarta as citizens of the province and citizens of the royal palace. Third, the actions of Sultan Hamengkubuwono X in controlling the masses when the demonstrations turned violent. The results of the study show that a leadership system based on traditional authority is not always negative. In fact, at certain moments, leadership based on traditional authority is more effective than leadership based on legal rational authority. This can be a further reflection on the model of modern community leadership, especially in Indonesia, regarding the appropriate leadership in overcoming social dynamics in community life

Abstract

Sports not always been a neutral space, but rather an arena for the production and reproduction of power relations, ideologies, and social constructs. Formula 1 (F1) is a global sport laden with symbols of masculinity, capitalism, and exclusivity, which often marginalizes women in fandom culture. This study aims to deconstruct gender stereotypes about female F1 fans, who are often reduced to being “aesthetic fans” or merely following trends because of their interest in the appearance of F1 drivers, rather than the thchnical aspects of the sport. Using Michel Foucault’s discourse analysis approach, this study highlights how power works through the media, online communities, and social interactions to normalize gender hierarchies in F1 fandom culture. The research data was obtained through content and comments on the Instagram account @infipop.id, which shows how stereotypes are produced and challenged by resistance from female F1 fans. The results of the study show that social media has become a space for social deconstruction, where women associate their identities as true F1 fans through alternative narratives, technical analysis, and digital communities. This study contributes to gender and sports studies by emphasizing the importance of social deconstruction in creating a more inclusive and egalitarian fandom space.
