Abstract

English is an international language used in various fields, including the maritime sector. In the maritime sector, English is used for communication, both between seafarers and between seafarers and related parties, such as port officers, cargo agents and shipping companies. In order to provide competent resources in the maritime world, the role of maritime vocational education is present to address these problems. In Indonesia, maritime vocational education aims to produce graduates who have competence in the maritime field. One of the competencies that maritime vocational education graduates must have is the ability to speak maritime English. In order to provide competent resources in the maritime world, the role of maritime vocational education is present to address these problems. Although the importance of maritime English is recognized, there is a gap between industry needs and the competencies of Indonesian maritime vocational education graduates. Mastery of correct maritime terminology is essential for sailors and maritime personnel. Maritime terms used incorrectly can lead to potentially dangerous misunderstandings. Maritime jargon is often used in oral and written communication in the maritime environment. Maritime jargon is usually used to convey messages briefly and clearly.

Abstract

This research used a qualitative method. The data were utterances uttered by characters in the Paranorman movie, whereas the contexts were dialogues. The research used the Paranorman movie script and movie as sources. The researcher was the primary instrument, with the data sheet as a secondary. The researcher collected data through analyzing documents by note-taking. The data were analyzed using a reference. The results of the research are as follows. First, other characters in Paranorman use four types of impoliteness strategies. They are bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, and sarcasm. Second, each impoliteness strategy has its own representation. Direct, clear, and unambiguous statements are used to express impoliteness. Positive impoliteness occurs as disassociating from others, calling the other names, and using of taboo words. Negative impoliteness occurs as condescending, scorning, or ridiculing the other. Sarcasm or mock politeness is only performed by using insincere politeness. This is the most representation. Third, the movie shows three responses: no response, accepting, and countering the face attack. Countering a face attack has two parts: offensive and defensive.

Abstract

Maritime English as the variety of ESP is taught for the students in the maritime field. In this study mainly discuss about the understanding of the Indonesian maritime students in using maritime English in the daily report in form in cadet record book. The students are expected to understand in using maritime English in the daily report the appropriate approach. The communicative approach has been selected as the best approaches since it involved the student’s activities in practice and drills the tasks in using maritime English in daily report. In this case, the teachers are expected to be aware with the student’s background of knowledge. The teachers are also expected to have communicative approach in order to discover the best implementation of the communication aims.

Abstract

This study explores the unique characteristics of Marine Engineering English, a specialized form of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) used in ship machinery operations. Focusing on technical terminology, idiomatic expressions, and their functional roles, the research aims to identify how Marine Engineering English facilitates clear and efficient communication in marine engineering contexts. Data were collected from marine engineering textbooks, international journals, and authentic communication transcripts, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that Marine Engineering English is characterized by its technical precision, standardized terminology, and use of idioms rooted in maritime traditions. Phrases like "main engine overhaul" and idioms such as "running like a well-oiled machine" are essential for operational safety and teamwork. Compared to General English, Marine Engineering English is highly specialized, with a focus on operational efficiency and cultural identity. The study concludes that integrating technical vocabulary and idiomatic expressions into maritime education can enhance learners' communicative competence. Practical recommendations are provided for learners, educators, and industry professionals to improve the teaching and application of Marine Engineering English.

Abstract

Chemistry is essential for maritime engineering students, but many concepts are abstract and difficult to understand due to limited resources that integrate macroscopic, microscopic, and symbolic representations. This study aimed to develop and validate a maritime chemistry e-module that combines multiple representations with Augmented Reality (AR) technology, aligned with IMO Model Course 7.04. The research employed the ADDIE development model, consisting of five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through expert validation sheets and student response questionnaires, and analyzed using percentage analysis. The results showed that the e-module achieved very valid criteria, with average feasibility values of 92.75% for material and 98.09% for media aspects. Student responses indicated high acceptance in terms of appearance, design, ease of use, content comprehension, interactivity, engagement, and perceived benefits, with an overall score of 87.36% classified as very good. In conclusion, the multiple representation-based AR e-module provides maritime engineering students with a practical, contextual, and engaging learning tool, enhancing conceptual understanding in maritime chemistry.

Abstract

This study aimed at developing of teaching maritime English as English for Specific Purpose especially in conducting Maritime English Preparation Test. The purpose of this study is to find out the problems of maritime students’ in learning Maritime English and describe how the product will be developed. It is also intended to investigate how effective of MEPT for improving students’ achievement for learning maritime English. This study is Research and Development (R and D) and It was adapted from Borg and Gall (1983) and Sugiyono (2009) as the basis of conducting this research. There are Problem arise, Need analysis, Design the concept of Maritime English Preparation Test, Preliminary Test, Expert judgment, product revision, field test and final product of Maritime English Preparation Test by using flash application. The type of the test consisted of some of the aspects such as grammar, pronunciation, listening, vocabularies drilling. I used multiple choice tests as the treatment in order to find out the effectiveness of the product toward the students’ achievement. The aspect of the test item has already designed mixed randomly by the computer program. From the result of the research analysis showed that the product was effective to improve students’ score for Maritime English Test.
