Abstract

Ironwood (eusideroxylon zwageri) is a type of wood that has great potential for industrial development. Currently, forest exploitation activities and the wood industry produce 30%-60% solid wood waste and have not been utilized optimally. One way to use it is to make composite materials. The purpose of this study was to determine the most optimal drying technique of ironwood powder, to provide information on the morphology, content and functional groups as well as the mechanical strength of the biocomposite with a volume fraction ratio. The ironwood powder samples in this study were characterized using the SEM-EDX, FTIR, and Vickers hardness tests. The results of the SEM test obtained information that the morphology of all samples had similarities, namely the surface was rough and the measured diameter of the sample ranged from 50-100 µm. While the EDX test obtained information that all samples had high carbon and oxygen content. The FTIR test results showed that ironwood powder had a cellulose content as evidenced by the absorption peaks and chemical bonds that were the same as pure cellulose. The results of the mechanical test on the biocomposite showed that sample C had the highest average HV value of 13.3 N/m2, while sample E had an average HV value of 12.26 N/m2 below the HV value of sample E. Meanwhile, sample A obtained the lowest hardness value with an average HV 5.93 N/m2.

Abstract

Curcumin is the main component of turmeric with various biological activities, one of which is antidiabetic. However, curcumin has low bioavailability and fast metabolism, so repeated doses are required if used as a medicine. Curcumin analogs have better bioavailability than curcumin. This study aims to synthesize curcumin analog from 4-methoxybenzaldehyde and monoketone (cyclohexanone and cyclopentanone), and their synergism effect using iodine method. The compounds A and B have been synthesized using Claisen-Schmidt condensation from benzaldehyde derivatives using KOH 8% and ethanol as solvent. The results showed that the curcumin analogs A and B were yellow solids with yields of 31,13% and 31,87%, respectively. The structure of products was characterized by FTIR, DI-MS, 1H- and 13C-NMR, showed that curcumin analogs A is 2,6-bis(4-methoxybenzylidene)cyclohexanone and curcumin analogs B is 2,6-bis(4-methoxybenzylidene)cyclopentanone. α-amylase inhibition assay of curcumin analogs A and B were performed by formation of amylum-iodine complex with UV-vis spectrophotometer at wavelength of 600 nm, showed that 33,03% and 91,5% at concentration 1 mM. Synergy studies with ferulic acid indicated that compound A 99,23% at a concentration ratio (1:8) and B 99,14% (1:4). This indicates a synergy between curcumin analogs and ferulic acid as an inhibitor of the α-amylase.

Abstract

Abstract

Curcumin analogs are phenolic secondary metabolites that are more stable than curcumin because they do not contain active methylene groups. Generally, these compounds have a symmetric structure, while asymmetric curcumin analogs with higher frequency and potency are rarely synthesized. This study aimed to synthesize asymmetric curcumin analogs from 2-(3,4-dimethoxybenzylidene)cyclohexanone and bromoanisaldehyde. The synthesis was conducted using the Claisen-Schmidt condensation method with a base catalyst in ethanol at 25 °C for 12 hours. The intermediate compound available in the laboratory was characterized using GC-MS, showing a molecular ion (M⁺) at m/z 246. Meanwhile, bromoanisaldehyde was characterized by GC-MS and FT-IR, yielding a molecular ion at m/z 215 and a C–Br stretching vibration peak at 812 cm⁻¹. The study yielded a yellow solid weighing 0.13 g (yield percentage: 2.93%) with a melting point of 143-147 °C. UV-Vis, FT-IR, and HR-MS analysis confirmed the successful synthesis and characterization of the asymmetric curcumin analog, as evidenced by the molecular ion (M⁺) at m/z 443.06274 in the HR-MS spectrum. However, further analysis, such as ¹H-NMR and ¹³C-NMR, is needed to confirm the structure of the compound. Furthermore, research related to bioactivity testing is crucial for obtaining more stable and effective drug candidates.
