Abstract

Patients with a chronic kidney disease encounter medical as well as psychological problems. They have to adjust to the daily changes in life as consequences of the required treatment. The need to take medication regularly, hemodialysis treatment, and reduce mobility because of limitation of physical abilities may cause distress and often impact on their self-esteem. This study aimed to investigate the correlation of self-esteem to quality of life on patients with chronic kidney disease who undergo hemodialysis. The study population is patients who join “Komunitas Hidup Ginjal Muda”, a community of young people with kidney disease in the social media (Facebook) which has 371 members. The incidental sampling technique was applied and resulted in 34 patients joined the study as study participants. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Kidney Disease Quality of Life Short Form (version 1.3) were used to collect data. The results of product moment correlation analysis showed that there was a positive and significant correlation between self-esteem and quality of life among chronic kidney disease patients who undergo hemodialysis (r = .417; p = .014).

Abstract

Emotional regulation skills should be taught to Children with Special Needs in order to provide appropriate responses to various situations. The learning methods used by Children with Special Needs focus on communication, direct instruction, and cooperative learning. This study aims to train the ability to regulate emotions in Children with Special Needs with a medium that attracts Children with Special Needs, namely Emotional Activities. Emotional Activities consists of picture storybooks, boardgames, activity sheets and videos. The measurement instrument uses The Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) with cognitive reappraisal reliability of α = 0.910 and expressive suppression of α = 0.658. This study used a quasi-experimental method with one group pretest-posttest design. Children with Special Needs respondents totaled 18 people. The validation results of SME (Subject Matter Experts) show that Emotional Activities have included the goals to be achieved. Data analysis to test the effectiveness of Emotional Activities using Wilcoxon yielded p=0.043 (p<0,05). Conclusion of this research that Emotional Activities can train emotional regulation skills in Children with Special Needs.
