Abstract

Performance of universities based on research ranking has become a trend to gauge the credibility and quality of the university. One of the parameters used to assess university ratings is the result of research in the form of papers, patents, copyrights. Therefore, universities in the world compete to publish research results in the form of journals or conferences and others. This paper discusses on performance of universities based on research output. The results of research index in developed countries shows that there is not much change from year to year, it may be said that it almost reaches a saturation point. On the other side of the earth, the increase in research results in ASEAN countries is still high, reaching 70-80 percent. More impressive, universities in Indonesia have tried very enthusiastically in the study as the percentage increase was 500%.

Abstract

Bulbous bow ship economically has advantage during sailing in open water due to lower resistance compared with an ice bow. On the other hand, the movement of the ship gradually give load to the ice sheet, along with that, the ice sheet will react in proportion to the load of the ship. Therefore the bulbous bow ship has higher ice resistance. This paper discusses the phenomena of ice sheet buckling due bulbous bow of ice ship. The ice sheet buckling was analyzed using Finite Element Method based on Euler method. The Euler method was described from general deflection equation for a beam.

Abstract

Ice resistance is very important in design of an ice ship due to related to the propulsion system. Bulbous bow ship economically has advantage during sailing in open water due to lower resistance compared with an ice bow. On the other hand, the bulbous bow ship has higher ice resistance due to bulbous bow. This paper discusses effect of bulbous bow on ice resistance of ice ship using Finite Element Method. In the simulation, the interaction of bulbous bow-ice was detected using the Couple Eulerian Langrangian. Simulation was run at ship speeds of 0.4 m/sand 0.5 m/s at 0.5 m of ice thickness. It was founded that during ice crushing, the pressure changes that occur in the hull are directly combined with changes in the internal energy of the ice. The ice resistance increases due to buckling and bending created by bulbous bow.

Abstract

As many other cities in the world, DKI Jakarta faces serious problems in the flood. In rainy season, common flooding is caused by several factors as follows: lowland areas in the northern part of Jakarta below sea level, urbanization rate, irregular population density, river pollution, slum neighborhood where scattered rubbish where quickly provoke the flood to stagnate and increase rather than receding. This paper studied on rivers pollution in DKI Jakarta. It was founded that water quality from 13 rivers in DKI Jakarta was at a critical level. The lack of sanitation systems in residential areas around rivers has highly contributed to pollute the rivers. It was 96 percent of the water is badly polluted. Therefore river water in DKI Jakarta can be harmful to health if consumed by the community.

Abstract

Since Dutch era, flood has become serious issues faced by DKI Jakarta. Study on prevention flood program has also been conducted since Dutch era. In rainy season, common flooding is caused by several factors as follows: lowland areas in the northern part of Jakarta below sea level, urbanization rate, irregular population density, slum neighborhood where scattered rubbish where quickly provoke the flood to stagnate and increase rather than receding. This flood is mainly caused by not only above factors but also land subsidence an average of 5-10 cm every year. This paper discusses on flood characteristics in DKI Jakarta. In the study, firstly history of flood was discussed started in Dutch era until after independence. It was founded that floods occur in continuous heavy rains like in January and February. There is a combination of floods caused by rain in the upstream and downstream. Previously heavy rains can cause flooding in subsequent heavy rains.

Abstract

AIS (Automatic Identification System) is an automatic tracking system used by ships and vessel traffic service (VTS) for identifying ship information by electronically exchanging data with other vessels, coastal station, and satelite. AIS can be used to monitor vessels traffic on a strait channel by detecting a large number of vessels and collecting the ships information related to ship static, dynamic and voyage information such as MMSI number, navigation status, rate of turn (ROT), ship speed, ship position, course over ground (COG), ship heading (HDG), time stamp, RAIM flag and radio status at once. On this paper we try to develop an AIS system for vessel traffic monitoring purpose in the Strait of Malacca especially in the Strait of Singapore and Batam Waterways as one of the world's most congested straits used for international shipping. The method of AIS system development is divided onto 2 stage. Firstly, AIS raw data sent by ships are recorded and decoded as ships information into an application at once. Secondly, the output of AIS decode is used into web based interactive visualization application to visualize the vessels traffic. The development of AIS system has been tested by running the AIS record, decode and web visualisation and shown that the system could be applied to vessel traffic monitoring.

Abstract

University rankings have become a trend to gauge the credibility and quality of the university. The university rating has generated much debate about the usefulness, method and accuracy of the assessment results. There are some institution who issued university rankings such as QS, 4ICU, CWUR and Webometrics. The universities were assessed depending on research indicators and opinion surveys. There are many anomalies in ranking gap values between universities as well some clumsiness of values at certain regions. The inadequacy of those tabulation indicators to assess most universities will look purely for reasons of obvious statistical instability. Statistically, there are three regions of ranking gap values: low, medium and high. Standard deviation of ranking gap values for universities in USA and UK is 6-7, Japan is 16, South Korea is 70, and Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia are no applicable. Those values indicate inconsistency of judgment and invalid and inaccuracy data used in the assessment.

Abstract

University ranking has indeed become a trend in the world. There are two things behind the growing interest in the use of ranking in the world of higher education they are as a form of accountability and as university strategy to achieve other goals such as prestige, funds, students and also good well known lecturers. This paper proposes Book Publication Index (BPI) as a World University Rank Indicator. In the study, twenty five universities around the world have been taken as case study. The results show that academic staffs of top universities in ASIA and Australia have less interested in writing books. Conversely, academic staffs of top universities in the United States and the United Kingdom have highly an interest in writing books in addition to scientific work. Similarly, Universities in Indonesia focus on publishing books to support their academics.

Abstract

The movement of ice ship gradually gives load to the ice sheet, along with that, the ice sheet will react in proportion to the load of the ship. The phenomenon of interaction between ice and hull of ship has been studied by researchers through empirical mathematical simulation and experiment. This paper discusses the phenomena of ice sheet buckling and deflection caused by a ship sailing in ice level. The ice sheet buckling and deflection is analyzed based on using Finite Element Method based on Euler and Cantilever methods. The methods were described from general deflection equation for a beam. Simulation was carried out using Abaqus running ahead and astern at several speeds of 0.4m/s, 0.5m/s and 0.6m/s.
