Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the problems around the imprisonment of the female protagonist in Chalotte Perkins Gilman’s short story entiled The Yellow Wallpaper. The focus of the analysis is on the actors and factors causing imprisonment, types dan impacts of imprisonment, efforts to overcome the imprisonment, and the end of the imprisonment experienced by the female protagonist. To analyse this problems, feminist literary criticism is used supported by the stereotypes of the nineteenth century women, the medical opinion at that time and the feminist perspective concerning the mental disorder experienced by women, and the concept of oppression in the imprisonment as well. The result shows that a woman who experiences the physical and psychological imprisonment in the patriarchal household area tends to have mental disorder as an alternative to gain freedom. The conclusion that can be drawn is that in the patriarchal environment women’s movement area and psychological, emotional, intellectual actualization  tend to be limited in which the women who fight against those linitations will get the stigma of suffering from mental illness.

Abstract

This paper deals with the novel entitled The Blacker the Berry written by Wallace Thurman. The focus of analysis is on the existence of Emma Lou, a young woman with very black skin. The literary research method used is the contextual method supported by Sartre’s ‘Modes of Existence’, Bergoffen’s concept on female’s body, the concept of intra-racial racism, and Faludi’s ‘Backlash’ framed in feminist literary criticism. The result shows that it is not easy for a young, black-skinned woman to live in a world still strictly applied intra-racial racism. She has to endure a bombardment of existential backlashes in the form of otherness due to the ideology adoring lighter skin. Her decision to construct her own existence emerges after she is able to accept her specific blackness.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the theme of free choices and their relation to the stated consequences embodied in the two short stories, one by W.W. Jacobs entitled The Monkey’s Paw and another one by Richard Matheson entitled Button, Button. The analysis focuses on four aspects; namely, the situational triggers of the free choices, the gripping conflicts in the free choices, the ethical consequences, and the purpose of the twisted endings. The concepts borrowed to support the analysis are the concepts concerning situational choices, morality types, and ethical consequences. The research methods applied in the analysis are the combination of the library research, the textual method enriched with the relevant contexts in order to completely dig out the proposed problems The results of the discussion show that every free choice taken under whatever reason will lead to the stated consequence whether it is unbelievable or impossible. The superstitious atmosphere in The Monkey’s Paw and the mysterious atmosphere in the Button, Button, all lead to the inevitability to avoid the temptation to choose resulting in the disastrous consequences.

Abstract

This paper deals with Ahmad Tohari’s English-translated novel entitled The Red Bekisar. The focus is on the effects of the changing locus on the female protagonist’s hybridity. To support the analysis, several concepts are used, namely, the concepts of hybridity, mimicry, and cultural identity in postcolonial literature. Using feminist literary criticism as the frame of analysis, the general research method used is qualitative research, supported by library research. For the literary analysis, the contextual research method is applied, in which, by considering the character, conflict, and setting, the focus is on the female protagonist’s hybridity and how her hybridity is regarded by people from different loci. The results show that the female character, Lasi, has a different life because of her Javanese-Japanese mixed blood. In the remote village of Karangsoga, her hybridity is scorned, but in the big city of Jakarta, her hybridity is highly appreciated. However, she is treated like an object, a valuable doll that can be transferred to different owners. Her resistance indicates that her agency as a human being emerges when she is cornered.
