Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate argumentation writing skills in terms of critical reading and student academic vocabulary mastery. This research was conducted at the Department of English Education, Semester VII, STKIP Kusuma Negara Cijantung. The research method used is a correlation survey with technical regression analysis. Collecting data from research variables using test instruments. The results of this study reveal that: (1) critical reading has a positive effect on students' argumentation writing skills; (2) academic vocabulary mastery has a positive influence on students' argumentative writing skills; and (3) critical reading and mastery of academic vocabulary have a positive influence on students' argumentative writing skills. Therefore, it can be concluded that the improvement of critical reading skills, mastery of academic vocabulary supports the improvement of students' argumentation writing

Abstract

Abstract

This present study investigates the development of under graduate students’ critical reading skills through multimodal text. Multimodal text is a text that contains semiotic mode which covers gesture, visual image, document, layout, music, architectural design, etc. The design of this study classroom action research (CAR) since the study aims to improves students’ critical reading skill and solve several problems arouse in teaching and learning. The participants of this study are twenty-four undergraduate students studying at English education study program in STKIP Kusuma Negara. Based on the characteristics of CAR, it is done repeatedly until those problems can be overcome. Four instruments covering critical reading test, classroom observations, questionnaire, and interview were conducted as data collections of this study. The results of this study indicates that the students’ critical reading skills improved significantly after using multimodal text as media in teaching and learning process. This study is expected to give an insight and contribution for English pedagogy.

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat merupakan bagian dari Tridharma Pendidikan Tinggi untuk dapat memberikan kontribusi dan memberdayakan rakyat  Indonesia yang  memerlukan. Untuk itulah Tim PKM STKIP Kusuma Negara berkolaborasi dengan TPKK Desa Sanja melakukan kegiatan peningkatan keterampilan literasi digital kepada kader PKK, Posyandu dan remaja di wilayah Desa Sanja. Kegiatan tersebit dilakukan dalam bentuk penyuluhan terkait keterampilan Literasi digital dan pelatihan penggunaan komputer secara langsung untuk mengolah data. Keterampilan literasi digital merupakan hal yang sangat mereka butuhkan untuk lebih meningkatkan pelayanan mereka kepada masyarakat sebagai fasilitator, perencana, pelaksana, pengendali dan penggerak di wilayah Desa Sanja. Terlebih lagi banyak sekali tugas- tugas dan pelaporan kinerja mereka harus dilakukan secara digital karena terhubung  langsung dengan pengolahan data milik pemerintah. Lebih dari dua puluh lima peesta hadir dan secara antusias mengiikuti kegiatan. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari antusiasme mereka bertanya jawab dengan pemateri dan semangat mereka menyelesaikan tugas tuga s mereka. Pelatihan penggunaan komputer dapat dilakukan dengan memanfaatkan sejumlah laptop yng dipinjamkan oleh tim PKM dan sejumlah masyarakat desa Sanja. Peran serta mahasiswa yang  menjadi tutor pendamping  saat pelatihan komputer mendapat respon sangat positif dari peserta. Dengan kolaborasi kita bisa berinovasi walau dalam keterbatasan.

Abstract

Vocational High School (VHS)Students are expected to work directly upon completing their study. Thus, the curriculum and material should be relevant with their majors since the skills are necessary to enter the workforce, including their English skills. The implementation of curriculum and material in VHS should have different characteristic from the ones implemented in Senior High School. English curriculum and material in VHS should contain and produce the aspects of work skills. The aim of this study is to investigate the VHS English teachers’ perception on curriculum and material implemented in VHS. The research applied descriptive qualitative research design that involved three VHS teachers in Depok as respondent. Semi-structured interview was conducted to collect the data. The study shows that teachers have unfavorable perception towards the English curriculum and material implemented in VHS. The result implies that the content of English curriculum and material are similar to the ones taught in Senior High Schools and thus are not relevant to VHS students’ needs to enter the workforce. They suggest that English curriculum and material in VHS should be integrated to the students’majors and propose ESP as the type of English implemented in VHS. Having ESP in VHS will enable students to improve their Englih skills relevant to their needs of working and eventually help them to compete in the global workforce.
