Abstract

This study employs fractal algorithms to generate and transform original Aceh ornaments into architectural design elements. The interpretation and generation of this ornaments by fractal method uses L-system based software called jBatik. We studied an approach of preserving local ornaments using three stages: understanding the local ornament geometry function, interpreting and generating new ornament using fractal method, exploring the possible iterations of patterns based on fractal algorithms. We applied this process into architectural design experiments where the 3D patterns used as an architectural design elements. The result shows that the possibility of preserving local ornament by fractal method can open opportunity for architects to explore new approach in design using the iteration and transformation of local ornaments. The endless possibilities offered by fractal method for generating new ornaments justify the digital advancement for its preservation.

Abstract

Developing a virtual 3D environment by using game engine is a strategy to incorporate various multimedia data into one platform. The characteristic of game engine that is preinstalled with interactive and navigation tools allows users to explore and engage with the game objects. However, most CAD and GIS applications are not equipped with 3D tools and navigation systems intended to the user experience. In particular, 3D game engines provide standard 3D navigation tools as well as any programmable view to create engaging navigation thorough the virtual environment. By using a game engine, it is possible to create other interaction such as object manipulation, non playing character (NPC) interaction with player and/or environment. We conducted analysis on previous game engines and experiment on urban design project with Unity3D game engine for visualization and interactivity. At the end, we present the advantages and limitations using game technology as visual representation tool for architecture and urban design studies.

Abstract

This study addressed an increasing need for collaborative skills for architecture graduates in the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industries and fill in the gap of studies in collaborative engagements in architecture schools where most of the studies had focused on the creative collaboration in the design process to increase collaborative teamwork within architecture students. The study was conducted as a project-based interdisciplinary course for 4th-year undergraduate programs which involves engineering departments: Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, and Interior Design. The aim of the study is to critically evaluate the experience gained in the collaborative and interdisciplinary courses, as well as a valuable lesson learned based on students' perspectives. The results showed that an innovative pedagogy must be provided to foster collaborative works, through a concurrent-integrative approach. Another finding is the digital platform potentially increases students’ engagement in interactive discussion and teamwork when appropriately implemented. This was confronted with several challenges, specifically the legacy of a conventional mono-discipline pedagogy and the liberation of critical collaborative thinking among the students.

Abstract

This study investigated the method of Shape Grammar to develop a computational technique to generate spatial configuration at the early stage of the design process. In synthesizing the spatial configuration and its variants, the user (i.e., architect) can use this tool as a heuristic way to select and choose a spatial configuration of geometric shapes to represent functional requirements and their relationships. We studied the example of Adolf Loos's residential works as our basis for the parametric shape rules and the tool developed in the form of a modular cluster component in the Visual Programming Language Grasshopper in a Rhinoceros 3D modeling software. This cluster component, termed "Rupa," is parametrically modeled and consists of two main algorithms: 1) two-dimensional and three-dimensional rules-based shape generation and 2) the transformation rules of translation, rotation, reflection, dilatation, and tension. Using this component, the user can create and transform a shape configuration by its parameters, constrained only by the characteristics of Adolf Loos's residential works design rules as the underlying principles behind the component. Although limited only to three of Loos's residential works, this experiment has successfully generated residential spatial configuration designs based on the constraint rules of Adolf Loos's residential works. The early results show the potential of this method and tool in aiding architects to create design variants and select those that are the most optimal.

Abstract

The repercussions of information technologies in the design process are undoubtedly revolutionary. As the digital natives will no longer require a traditional method to learn digital tools in architecture, there is a need to shift from tradition-bound techniques to an experimental mode where creativity and innovation rely upon a platform of explorative, speculative, and the recognition of serendipity and error as a credible basis on which innovation occurs. This study seeks to embrace a new method for design exploration by a generative design platform. Form-finding is encouraged through a bottom-up process of speculative actions. The goal is to cultivate serendipitous discoveries in the design process and leverage generative tools to explore performative aspects of architecture. The findings of this research offer some insights into how generative design platforms can encourage performative architectural design exploration.

Abstract

Abstract: Environmental problems are caused by climatic conditions and the results of sunlight entering buildings that cannot be controlled. Shading device become part of the building and interact directly with the environment and space in the building. Shading device can be applied to buildings to respond to environmental conditions such as solar radiation. Conditioning solar radiation entering buildings can be reduced to reduce building energy use. The results of this simulation show that the length (P) and angle (S) parameters have a significant positive effect on decreasing the intensity of solar radiation. Elements of the Horizontal Louvers type with a change in the value of the Angle (S) parameter from the basic design results in a decrease in radiation intensity of up to 44.3% when the angle changes to 150 with respect to the horizontal wall. In the Brise-Soleil Semi Façade With Louvers type, changing the value of the Length parameter (P) from the basic design results in a decrease in radiation intensity of up to 40.3% in the shading element with a length of 0.8 meters. On the other hand, changes in the distance parameter (J) of the shading element to the horizontal wall tend to increase the intensity of solar radiation. In the Horizontal Louvers type, the change in the parameter Distance (J) to the wall with a distance of 0.3 meters from the horizontal wall results in an increase in intensity of up to 81.1% when compared to the design basis. Abstract

Vernacular architecture in seismic-prone regions often reflects generations of  knowledge embedded in local building practices. This knowledge contributes significantly to the earthquake resilience of traditional structures through context-specific design strategies and materials. This study presents a systematic literature review to identify the critical factors that influence the seismic resistance of vernacular buildings. A summative content analysis method was employed, emphasizing the elements that affect the seismic performance of these structures. The review identifies six key factors contributing to the earthquake resistance of vernacular buildings, categorized into two primary domains: explicit knowledge, which includes building typology, structural systems, construction methods, and building materials, and implicit knowledge, encompassing community involvement and risk management. The findings underscore the significance of local architectural knowledge as a fundamental basis for developing more effective and sustainable construction strategies to enhance earthquake resilience in earthquake-prone areas.
