Abstract

In Indonesian context, writing is considered as painful activity indicating that oral culture is much better than writing one. The students’ works are sufficiently kept in the libraries, although to publish those is much more worthy. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the students’ writing skills through a meaningful way namely writing journal article. Amongst the underlying ways to publish the students’ manuscripts is by taking a look at the structure of a journal article, the writing guide and the writing style of a journal publication to which the manuscript is intended to publish. By implementing the above mentioned tips of writing a journal article, the EFL students will not only improve their writing skills but make their works much worthy as well. Abstract

In response to the fact that college students complain on their unsuccessful story of their EFL learning experience such as the limited number of vocabulary, English Grammar confusion, low competence of English language skills, this article explores an alternative effective way of helping them to improve their English through Text-Based Learning (TBL) model. This article is then intended to narrate the implementation of TBL to teach English for college students of non English Department of Post Graduate Program of State Islamic Institute of Tulungagung, Indonesia. The result of implementing this teaching model proves to be able to not only stimulate joyful learning atmosphere but to attract the students’ active participation during the EFL instructional process as well. This further brings about their better practical understanding on English language skills as their expectation. Therefore, for English lecturers, this model is pedagogically good to be implemented in their English instructional practices.

Abstract

People agree that reading is essential skill to get any knowledge in order to get the success of life either academically or socially. Reading needs to be embedded and nurtured because it is not a born skill. Still, the fact shows that EFL students in Indonesian context have not established good habits in reading English, as also experienced by EFL students in IAIN Tulungagung who are also categorized as reluctant readers due to their lack of vocabulary knowledge and number. Many studies on Extensive Reading (ER) indicate its positive impact on nurturing good habits of EFL reading in English. Accordingly implementing Extensive Reading Program to help them build love of reading is necessary. This article is then intended to dig up their responses on the implementation of ER program to the establishment of their love of reading. This research objective was achieved by distributing Reading Log during implementing Guided Extensive Reading Program (GERPro), distributing Questionnaire, and conducting interview to those involved in this ER program. The result of this research reveals that the EFL students joining this ER program claim that for those who do not establish good habits in reading English, ER proved to be able to embed their awareness of love of reading in English, and for those who already built reading love in their mother tongue-Indonesian language, their reading love in both Indonesian language and English gets increased. In addition, this GERPro contributes to the establishment of EFL students’ love of online reading. In short, this research result can be pedagogically implemented by EFL teachers who would like to help their students nurturing good reading habits in English. However, for those who are moody, this GERPro does not work well. Consequently, the next researcher needs to conduct a research on how to work with moody EFL students so that their reading habits can be well established.

English plays a very great role with the progress of globalization as a common international language for living in the 21st century. Thus, it is significant to promote the Indonesian students to acquire good literacy in both reading and writing in English.  To achieve this, English which is comprised of language skills and components, in Indonesia, is learnt formally from elementary school to tertiary level of education.
