Abstract

In EFL context, it is believed that developing writing skills is more complicated than developing other language skills. In order to be able to write well, the foreign language learners need to be equipped with early and continued writing experiences. Thus, the teacher’s task to develop the students’ writing skill is more complicated than the other skills. One of the most current issues to deal with such phenomena is to ferret out the writing strategy that is able to enhance the students’ writing ability as well as to reinforce their critical thinking in writing by maximizing the use of both sides of the brain (the left and the right hemispheres). In response to such issues, this paper takes into account mind mapping as a strategy in writing and elaborates the theoretical review of mind mapping for better understanding. Keywords: Mind Mapping, Writing

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of mind mapping as a strategy in generating ideas before writing on the EFL students’ idea development in argumentative writing as perceived from their gender differences and learning styles. By conducting an experimental investigation at university level in Indonesia, two existing TOEFL classes at the State Islamic Studies (STAIN) in Kediri were selected by a lottery to group 1: using linear notes (N=41), and group 2: using mind mapping (N=41). For analyzing the data, Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were utilized by using students’ TOEFL score as the covariate variable. The result findings indicated that there is no significant difference on the students’ idea developments in writing between the control and the experimental groups. These result also revealed that there is no significant difference on the students’ idea development in writing between gender differences, and among the students’ learning styles. Furthermore, there is no significant interaction between treatment and gender differences, and there is no significant interaction between treatment and learning styles.

The focus of this research is to improve students' speaking ability in English descriptive text. This method is implemented to the research subjects of class VII students of MTs Raudlatuth Thalabah Kediri. The research method uses classroom action research and the data collection starts from student observations, pre-test, and post-test. Based on the results of the findings, the researchers found that the development of students' speaking skills from each test result that had been presented with the explanation of the last post-test data as follows, the lowest score of students in the second cycle post-test was 60.00 and the highest score was 90.00 then the class average value in the second cycle post-test was 78.1481 so that this study resulted in that this mind map method succeeded in improving students' English speaking skills even though some researchers found obstacles in the research process.

Abstract

Literacy is vital in understanding pupils' knowledge of learning content. However, learners have encountered several learning challenges, including vocabulary mastering and reading comprehension. The purpose of this study was to see if there was a link between students' literacy practice, world knowledge proficiency, and text skimming in senior high school. This study's data was analyzed using quantitative methodologies and a correlation design. There were 141 tenth grade students from SMAN 4 Kota Kediri who took part. They completed the vocabulary and reading comprehension tests by multiple-choice questions and items for the reading habits questionnaire. The researcher utilized Pearson Product Moment Coefficient and using SPSS ver 26.0 for Windows to assess the correlation. Following data analysis, it was discovered that all variables have a significant (sig.) value of 0.00. while coefficient The correlation between reading literacy and vocabulary mastery was 0.504, whereas the correlation between reading literacy and text skimming was 0.257 and the correlation between vocabulary mastery and text skimming was 0.441. Based on the above results, there was a substantial connection between all variables, therefore Ho is rejected but Ha should be approved. When pupils have a high degree of reading literacy, it can be argued that they have a greater skill in vocabulary mastery and text skimming. The higher the degree of students' reading literacy and vocabulary knowledge, the better the students' reading comprehension ability.
