Abstract

The objective of this paper is to design a multi-input dc-ac inverter integrated photovoltaic array, wind turbine and fuel cell in order to simplify the hybrid power system and reduce the cost.  The output power characteristics of the photovoltaic array, wind turbine and fuel cell are introduced. The operational principle and technical details of the proposed multi-input dc-ac inverter is then explained. The proposed inverter consists of a three input flyback dc-dc converter and a single phase full bridge dc-ac inverter. The control strategy for the proposed inverter to distribute the power reasonably to the sources and it achieved a priority of the new energy utilization is discussed. This multi-input dc-ac inverter is capable of being operated in five conditions and power delivered to the ac load can be either individually or simultaneously. First to third condition occurs when the power delivered from either renewable energy sources individually, fourth condition happens when power is demanded from two sources simultaneously, and finally when power are available from three sources simultaneously. The proposed inverter has been simulated by employing NI Multisim 12.0 circuit simulator.

Abstract

Design of phase-shifted full bridge zero voltage switching DC-DC converter has been very challenging due to circuit parasitic effect on the system dynamics. This paper presents steady-state analysis and iterative approach for the systemic design of phase-shifted full bridge DC-DC converter with improved dynamic performance and satisfactory operational requirement in terms of zero-voltage switching range, operating switching frequency and switching resonance. A 3 kW DC-DC converter is designed using the iterative design approach and the system dynamics performance was investigated in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. The converter zero-voltage switching simulation results were satisfactory with 90% efficiency under full load condition.

Abstract

This paper presents the new generation of advanced gate driver circuit based on IR2110 device for a Single-Phase Matrix Converter (SPMC) circuit topology that uses MOSFETs or IGBTs switches. The new generation of gate drive circuit uses less number of components, since a single IR2110 device can drive two power switches, thus reduce power losses and minimize the complexity of conventional circuit. An additional isolation of the upper and lower sides of IR2110 device features additional protection to the proposed gate drive system. As a result, the proposed gate drive circuit just uses four IR2110 gate drives in order to control eight switches of SPMC circuit, thus, solve the conventional bulky gate drive circuit problem in SPMCs operation.  This is in line with the international power electronic technology road-maps to reduce losses, cost, volume, therefore to raise up the power density of power electronics converters. Validation have been done through the experimental test-rig. As a result, such new theoretical enhancements can be used as a novel foundation of future high power density of SPMC circuit topology and in-line with the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0) which were characterized mainly by advances in technology

Abstract

Direct current (DC) power systems are becoming very popular due to better control ability and equipment reliability thanks to the continuous development of power electronics. A DC circuit breaker (DCCB) used for current interruption in a DC network is a major part of the system. It plays the vital role of isolating networks during fault clearing as well as during normal load switching. Breaking the DC current is a major challenge as it does not have any natural zero crossing points like the AC current has. In addition, energy stored in the network inductances during normal operation opposes the instantaneous current breaking. Hence, all the conventional DC circuit breaker topologies use lossy elements to dissipate this stored energy as heat during the current breaking operation. However, it is possible to store this energy and reuse it later by developing an improvised topology. In this paper, the prospects of energy recovery and reuse in DC circuit breakers have been studied, and a new topology with regenerative current breaking capability has been proposed. This new topology can feed the stored energy of the network back into the same network after breaking the current and thus can improve the overall system efficiency.

Abstract

This paper introduces a new hybrid topology of multilevel inverter capable of generating 21-level output voltage. The proposed topology is built using the combination of cross-switched bridge and a conventional full H-bridge. Compared to the conventional topologies and other hybrid topologies, the newly introduced multilevel inverter has the ability to maximize the number of voltage levels utilizing lower number of DC voltage sources, integrated bipolar transistor (IGBT) switches and gate drivers. A low frequency modulation technique is used to generate the ideal multilevel output voltage and gate pulses. Furthermore, the proposed topology is validated by building a hardware prototype and obtaining relevant experimental results. The acquired simulated and experimental results indicate the proper functioning of the proposed hybrid topology along with the compatibility of the applied modulation technique.

Abstract

Due to the stunning advancement of power electronics, DC power system is getting immense attention in the field of research. Protection and hereafter the protective devices for the DC power system application are two vital areas that need to be explored and developed further. Designing a protective device such as DC circuit breaker possesses a lot of challenges. The main challenge is to interrupt a current which does not have a natural zero crossing like AC current has. In addition, energy is stored in the network inductances during normal operation. Instantaneous current breaking is opposed by this stored energy during circuit breaker tripping, hence, all the DC circuit breaker topologies proposed in literature use snubber network, nonlinear resistor to dissipate this stored energy as heat during the current breaking operation. However, it is possible to store this energy momentarily and reuse it later by developing an improvised topology. In this paper, the prospects of energy recovery and reuse in a DC circuit breaker was studied and a new topology with regenerative current breaking capability had been proposed. This new topology can feed the stored energy of the network back into the same network after breaking the current and thus can improve the overall system efficiency.
