Abstract

In this research, the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) of the GaN FETs-based high frequency three-port half-bridge converter (TPHBC), which is capable of interfacing a renewable energy source, an energy storage and a load is discussed. To achieve ZVS, which plays a key role in power loss reduction of the high switching frequency converters, not only the parasitic elements but also the dead-time between two switches in one converter arm must be taken into account. This research gives a detail analysis about the influence of the dead-time on the ZVS condition. Based on the analysis, a minimum dead-time which guarantees not only the ZVS but also the safe operation of the converter is obtained. Simulations in various load condition of the TPHBC are carried out to verify the validity and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract

Model predictive control has been considered as a powerful alternative control method in power converters and electrical drives recently. This paper proposes a novel method for finite control set predictive control algorithm foran induction motor fed by 11-level cascaded H-Bridge converter. To deal with the high computation volume of MPC algorithm applied for CHBconverter, 7-adjacent vectors method is applied for calculating the desired voltage vector which minimizes the cost function. Moreover, by utilizingfield programmable gate array (FPGA) platform with its flexible structure, the total execution time reduces considerably so that the selected voltage vector can be applied immediately without delay compensation. This method improves the dynamic responses and steady-state performance of the system. Finally, experimental results verify the effectiveness of control design

Abstract

It is acknowledged that the common-mode voltage may have detrimental effects on an induction motor (IM) drive system if not properly addressed. Therefore, in this paper, a modified multistep model predictive control method for IM drive system considering the common-mode voltage minimization is proposed. This research uses a multi-objective cost function, before applying the Sphere Decoding Algorithm to find the optimal control input. The results show that the proposed control method not only reduces the common-mode voltage significantly but also mitigates the computational burden of the microprocessor without affecting the system performance. The proposed control method is simulated by MATLAB-Simulink for an IM drive system with an 11-level cascaded H-bridge inverter.

Abstract

Temporary voltage swells and sags appear with high frequency in electric power systems, and they significantly affect sensitive loads such as industrial manufacturing or communication devices. This paper presents a strategy to design proportional-resonant controllers for three full-bridge voltage-source converters with a common DC-link in dynamic voltage restorer systems. The proposed controllers allow the system to quickly overcome temporary unbalanced voltage sags. Simulation results carried out in MATLAB/Simulink and experimental results implemented in a Typhoon HIL402 device demonstrate the ability of the proposed design method. The results show that the system with the proposed controllers can ride-through single-phase or double-phase voltage sags up to 55% and three-phase voltage sags up to 70% in a duration less than one grid-voltage cycle.

Abstract

Along with the development of powerful microprocessors and microcontrollers, the applications of the model predictive controller, which requires high computational cost, to fast dynamical systems such as power converters and electric drives have become a tendency recently. In this paper, two solutions are offered to quickly develop the finite set predictive current control for induction motor fed by 3-level H-Bridge cascaded inverter. First, the field programmable gate array (FPGA) with capability of parallel computation is employed to minimize the computational time. Second, the hardware in the loop (HIL) co-simulation is used to quickly verify the developed control algorithm without burden of time on hardware design since the motor and the power switches are emulated on a real-time platform with high-fidelity mathematical models. The implementation procedure and HIL co-simulation results of the developed control algorithm shows the effectiveness of the proposed solution.

Abstract

Flywheel energy storage systems (FESS) are considered as the grid integration of renewable energy sources due to their buit-in advantages such as fast response, long cycle life and flexibility in providing auxiliary services to the grid, such as frequency regulation, and voltage support. This paper introduces the structure and comparison results of matrix converter and back-to-back converter which integrated with axial flux permanent magnet motor (AFPM) in FESS. Two converters are functionally equivalent in terms of input power quality and energy regeneration capabilities but need to be compared in terms of performance testing with speed response. In this paper, the research results have been verified that matrix converters perform more effective than back-to-back converters.

Abstract

This paper will present why choosing a 7-level reverse voltage source fed to three-phase induction motors to the railway traction motor. In addition, this paper shows the implementation of space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) and the math model of induction motor, stator currents, and speed controller design of electric traction drive system based on field-oriented control (FOC). By MATLAB/Simulink method, this multi-level inverter in FOC structure reduces total harmonic distortion (THD) more than other multi-level inverters such as 3 and 5-level inverter. Furthermore, this FOC control structure combined with 7-level inverter improved speed and torque responses required for railway traction motor load.
